Density of states in the presence of spin-dependent scattering in SF bilayers: a numerical and analytical approach

We present a quantitative study of the density of states (DOS) in SF bilayers (where S is a bulk superconductor and F is a ferromagnetic metal) in the diffusive limit. We solve the quasiclassical Usadel equations in the structure considering the presence of magnetic and spin-orbit scattering. For practical reasons, we propose the analytical solution for the density of states in SF bilayers in the case of a thin ferromagnet and low transparency of the SF interface. This solution is confirmed by numerical calculations using a self-consistent two-step iterative method. The behavior of DOS dependencies on magnetic and spin-orbit scattering times is discussed.

Anomalous current-voltage characteristics of SFIFS Josephson junctions with weak ferromagnetic interlayers

We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of SFIFS Josephson junctions (S = bulk superconductor, F = metallic ferromagnet, I = insulating barrier) with weak ferromagnetic interlayers in the diffusive limit. The problem is solved in the framework of the nonlinear Usadel equations. We consider the case of a strong tunnel barrier such that the left SF and the right FS bilayers are decoupled. We calculate the density of states (DOS) in SF bilayers using a self-consistent numerical method. Then we obtain the CVC of corresponding SFIFS junctions, and discuss their properties for different set of parameters including the thicknesses of ferromagnetic layers, the exchange field, and the magnetic scattering time. We observe an anomalous nonmonotonic CVC in case of weak ferromagnetic interlayers, which we attribute to DOS energy dependencies in the case of small exchange fields in the F layers.

Spin-polarized supercurrents for spintronics: a review of current progress

During the past 15 years a new field has emerged, which combines superconductivity and spintronics, with the goal to pave a way for new types of devices for applications combining the virtues of both by offering the possibility of long-range spin-polarized supercurrents. Such supercurrents constitute a fruitful basis for the study of fundamental physics as they combine macroscopic quantum coherence with microscopic exchange interactions, spin selectivity, and spin transport. This report follows recent developments in the controlled creation of long-range equal-spin triplet supercurrents in ferromagnets and its contribution to spintronics. The mutual proximity-induced modification of order in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrid structures introduces in a natural way such evasive phenomena as triplet superconductivity, odd-frequency pairing, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing, long-range equal-spin supercurrents, [Formula: see text]-Josephson junctions, as well as long-range magnetic proximity effects. All these effects were rather exotic before 2000, when improvements in nanofabrication and materials control allowed for a new quality of hybrid structures. Guided by pioneering theoretical studies, experimental progress evolved rapidly, and since 2010 triplet supercurrents are routinely produced and observed. We have entered a new stage of studying new phases of matter previously out of our reach, and of merging the hitherto disparate fields of superconductivity and spintronics to a new research direction: super-spintronics.

Interplay between static and dynamic properties of semifluxons in YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) 0-pi Josephson junctions

We have investigated the static and dynamic properties of long YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) 0-pi Josephson junctions and compared them with those of conventional 0 junctions. Scanning SQUID microscope imaging has revealed the presence of a semifluxon at the phase discontinuity point in 0-pi Josephson junctions. Zero field steps have been detected in the current-voltage characteristics of all junctions. Comparison with simulation allows us to attribute these steps to fluxons traveling in the junction for conventional 0 junctions and to fluxon-semifluxon interactions in the case of 0-pi Josephson junctions.

Josephson current oscillation in a Rashba ring

We propose to use Rashba spin-orbital coupling (RSOC) to modulate the Josephson current in a one-dimensional ring-SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) without any magnetic field or magnetic material. Supercurrent oscillation due to spin-dependent quantum interference of spin wavefunctions passing through the two arms of the ring in the presence of RSOC is found. A pure spin current flows in the system's ground state without a supercurrent due to the combined effect of the RSOC precession phase and the electron traveling phase caused by the asymmetry in the two arms of the ring. This purely electrical means of modulating the supercurrent by varying the RSOC will be useful for designing novel superconductor devices.

Phase dynamics of ferromagnetic Josephson junctions

We have investigated the classical phase dynamics of underdamped ferromagnetic Josephson junctions by measuring the switching probability in both the stationary and nonstationary regimes down to 350 mK. We found the escape temperature to be the bath temperature, with no evidence of additional spin noise. In the nonstationary regime, we have performed a pump-probe experiment on the Josephson phase by increasing the frequency of the junction current bias. We show that an incomplete energy relaxation leads to dynamical phase bifurcation. Bifurcation manifests itself as premature switching, resulting in a bimodal switching distribution. We directly measure the phase relaxation time tau_{phi} by following the evolution of the bimodal switching distribution when varying the bias frequency. Numerical simulations account for the experimental values of tau_{phi}.

0-pi Josephson tunnel junctions with ferromagnetic barrier

We fabricated high quality Nb/Al2O3/Ni(0.6)Cu(0.4)/Nb superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson tunnel junctions. Using a ferromagnetic layer with a steplike thickness, we obtain a 0-pi junction, with equal lengths and critical currents of 0 and pi parts. The ground state of our 330 microm (1.3lambda(J)) long junction corresponds to a spontaneous vortex of supercurrent pinned at the 0-pi step and carrying approximately 6.7% of the magnetic flux quantum Phi(0). The dependence of the critical current on the applied magnetic field shows a clear minimum in the vicinity of zero field.

Superconducting pi qubit with a ferromagnetic Josephson junction

Solid-state qubits have the potential for the large-scale integration and for the flexibility of layout for quantum computing. However, their short decoherence time due to the coupling to the environment remains an important problem to be overcome. We propose a new superconducting qubit which incorporates a spin-electronic device: the qubit consists of a superconducting ring with a ferromagnetic pi junction which has a metallic contact and a normal Josephson junction with an insulating barrier. Thus, a quantum coherent two-level state is formed without an external magnetic field. This feature and the simple structure of the qubit make it possible to reduce its size leading to a long decoherence time.

Ferromagnetic 0-pi junctions as classical spins

The ground state of highly damped PdNi based 0-pi ferromagnetic Josephson junctions shows a spontaneous half quantum vortex, sustained by a supercurrent of undetermined sign. This supercurrent flows in the electrode of a Josephson junction used as a detector and produces a phi(0)/4 shift in its magnetic diffraction pattern. We have measured the statistics of the positive or the negative sign shift occurring at the superconducting transition of such a junction. The randomness of the shift sign, the reproducibility of its magnitude, and the possibility of achieving exact flux compensation upon field cooling are the features which show that 0-pi junctions behave as classical spins, just as magnetic nanoparticles with uniaxial anisotropy.

Spin-dependent quasiparticle reflection and bound States at interfaces with itinerant antiferromagnets

We find a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection from the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet (AF) on a bipartite lattice. Low-energy quasiparticles in a normal metal (N) experience spin-dependent retroreflection at AF/N interfaces. As a combined effect of antiferromagnetic and Andreev reflections, subgap Andreev states arise at an AF/superconductor (SC) interface. When the antiferromagnetic reflection dominates the specular one, Andreev bound states have almost zero energy on AF/s-wave superconductor (sSC) interfaces, whereas there are no low-energy subgap states on AF/d-wave superconductor (dSC) boundaries. For an sSC/AF/sSC junction, the bound states are found to split, due to the finite width of the AF interlayer, and carry the supercurrent. The theory developed in the present Letter is based on a novel quasiclassical approach, which applies to interfaces involving itinerant antiferromagnets.

Evidence for crossed Andreev reflection in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrid structures

We have measured the nonlocal resistance of aluminum-iron spin-valve structures fabricated by e-beam lithography and shadow evaporation. The sample geometry consists of an aluminum bar with two or more ferromagnetic wires forming point contacts to the aluminum at varying distances from each other. In the normal state of aluminum, we observe a spin-valve signal which allows us to control the relative orientation of the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic contacts. In the superconducting state, at low temperatures and excitation voltages well below the gap, we observe a spin-dependent nonlocal resistance which decays on a smaller length scale than the normal-state spin-valve signal. The sign, magnitude, and decay length of this signal are consistent with predictions made for crossed Andreev reflection.
