Observation of the vortex lattice spinodal in NbSe2

Enhancement of superconducting properties and flux pinning mechanism on Cr0.0005NbSe2 single crystal under Hydrostatic pressure

Superconducting properties of Cr_0.0005NbSe₂ (T_c~6.64 K) single crystals have been investigated through the temperature dependent resistivity (~8 GPa) and DC magnetization (~1 GPa) measurements. Further, the critical current density (J_c) as a function of applied magnetic field has been studied from magnetic isotherms. The vortex pinning mechanisms have also been systematically analyzed using weak collective pinning theory as a function of pressure. The J_c corresponds to the flux flow enhanced by the application of pressure due to increase of T_c and vortex changes. We found that the pressure is responsible for the spatial variations in the charge carrier mean free path (δl pinning). We find that core point pinning is more dominant than surface pinning which is caused by the application of pressure. In addition, J_c(H = 0) increases from 3.9 × 10⁵ (0 GPa) to 1.3 × 10⁶ (1.02 GPa) A/cm² at 2 K as the pressure is increased from normal pressure to 1.02 GPa. The pressure dependence of T_c (dT_c/dP) becomes 0.91 K/GPa and 0.75 K/GPa from magnetization and resistivity measurements respectively. We found that the pressure promotes the anisotropy nature, and decrease of coherence length and resulting in pathetic interface of the vortex core with pinning centers.

Dynamic Reorganization of Vortex Matter into Partially Disordered Lattices

We report structural evidence of dynamic reorganization in vortex matter in clean NbSe(2) by joint small-angle neutron scattering and ac susceptibility measurements. The application of oscillatory forces in a transitional region near the order-disorder transition results in robust bulk vortex lattice configurations with an intermediate degree of disorder. These dynamically originated configurations correlate with intermediate pinning responses previously observed, resolving a long-standing debate regarding the origin of such responses.

Magnetic field induced enlargement of the regime of critical fluctuations in the classical superconductor V3Si from high-resolution specific heat experiments

We present high-resolution specific heat data from a high-purity single crystal of the classical superconductor V(3)Si, which reveal tiny lambda-shape anomalies at the superconducting transition superimposed onto the BCS specific heat jump in magnetic fields of 2 T and higher. The appearance of these anomalies is accompanied by a magnetic-field-induced broadening of the superconducting transition. We demonstrate, using scaling relations predicted by the fluctuation models of the 3d-XY and the 3d-lowest-Landau-level (3d-LLL) universality class that the effect of critical fluctuations becomes experimentally observable due to of a magnetic field-induced enlargement of the regime of critical fluctuations. The scaling indicates that a reduction of the effective dimensionality due to the confinement of quasiparticles into low Landau levels is responsible for this effect.

Voltage-current properties of superconducting amorphous tungsten nanostrips

The voltage-current (V-I) characteristics of tungsten (W) strips patterned by focused-ion-beam assisted deposition were studied at different temperatures and various magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the strips. At fields of 1 Tesla (T) and 2 T, a scaling behavior was observed in V-I isotherms, which can be fitted by quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3D) vortex-glass (VG) to liquid transition theory.

Vortex phase diagram of the layered superconductor Cu0.03TaS2 for H is parallel to c

The magnetization and anisotropic electrical transport properties have been measured in high quality Cu(0.03)TaS(2) single crystals. A pronounced peak effect has been observed, indicating that high quality and homogeneity are vital to the peak effect. A kink has been observed in the magnetic field, H, dependence of the in-plane resistivity ρ(ab) for H is parallel to c, which corresponds to a transition from activated to diffusive behavior of the vortex liquid phase. In the diffusive regime of the vortex liquid phase, the in-plane resistivity ρ(ab) is proportional to H(0.3), which does not follow the Bardeen-Stephen law for free flux flow. Finally, a simplified vortex phase diagram of Cu(0.03)TaS(2) for H is parallel to c is given.

Collapse of the peak effect due to ac-induced flux creep in an isotropic vortex system of MgCNi3 single crystals

In an isotropic vortex system of MgCNi_{3} single crystal, we first observed the collapse of the peak effect (PE), which is a sudden increase in the critical current (I_{c}) near the end of superconductivity. By moving magnetic vortices with dc and ac driving currents, we investigated the vortex dynamics related to the PE. For the dc driving, a sharp peak in I_{c} was observed. As the driving frequency increases, the PE was collapsed and observable flux creep was developed in contrast to the result obtained from the well-studied anisotropic system of NbSe_{2}. Because the vortex matter in our experimental situation is isotropic and has large correlation volume without severe deformation by pinning, the mobility of the vortex matter is intrinsically high. From the detailed observation, we are convinced that the PE is definitely a dynamic phenomenon.

Ordered, disordered, and coexistent stable vortex lattices in NbSe2 single crystals

The peak effect (PE) in the critical current density of type II superconductors has been related to an order-disorder transition in the vortex lattice (VL), but its underlying physics remains a controversial issue. Intrinsic to the PE are strong metastabilities that frequently mask the stationary VL configurations. We follow shaking and thermal protocols in NbSe2 single crystals to access these configurations and examine them by linear ac susceptibility measurements that avoid VL reorganization. We identify three different regions. For T<T1(H), stable VL configurations are maximally ordered. For T>T2(H), configurations are fully disordered and no metastability is observed. In the T1<T<T2 region, we find temperature-dependent stable configurations with an intermediate degree of disorder, possibly associated with the coexistence of ordered and disordered lattices throughout the PE.

Solid superheating observed in two-dimensional strongly coupled dusty plasma

It is demonstrated experimentally that strongly coupled plasma exhibits solid superheating. A 2D suspension of microspheres in dusty plasma, initially self-organized in a solid lattice, was heated and then cooled rapidly by turning laser heating on and off. Particles were tracked using video microscopy, allowing atomistic-scale observation during melting and solidification. During rapid heating, the suspension remained in a solid structure at temperatures above the melting point, demonstrating solid superheating. Hysteresis diagrams did not indicate liquid supercooling in this 2D system.

Emergence of quasi-long-range order below the Bragg glass transition

We report small angle neutron scattering rocking-curve measurements of the flux line lattices in the peak effect region in a niobium single crystal. It is found that upon cooling in a magnetic field, the transverse orientational order as well as the longitudinal translational order grow rapidly with decreasing temperature, indicating diminishing population of defects in the ordering vortex matter. Surprisingly, during subsequent warming, longitudinal order increases with increasing temperature, presumably due to annealing of flux-lattice screw dislocations. The observed behavior indicates the gradual emergence of the Bragg glass phase from entangled vortex matter in the peak effect region.

Onset of motion and dynamic reordering of a vortex lattice

Time resolved transport measurements on a driven vortex lattice in an undoped 2H-NbSe2 crystal show that the response to a current pulse is governed by healing of defects as the lattice evolves from a stationary to a moving steady state and that the response time reflects the degree of order in the initial vortex state. We find that stationary field cooled vortex lattices become more ordered with decreasing temperature and identify a temperature below which a qualitative change in the response signals the disappearance of topological defects.
