Spin splitting induced by spin-orbit interaction in chiral nanotubes

Spin-Photon Coupling in Organic Chiral Crystals

Organic chiral materials have brought attention due to their potential application in the area of spin-optics and optoelectronics. Compared with traditional achiral materials, the chirality generated orbital angular momentum (CGO) is one of the key properties for chiral materials. Here, organic nanocrystals with chirality are fabricated to study the effect of the CGO on the magneto-optic coupling. The CGO affects spin states through spin-orbital coupling, which will suppress spin relaxation time to tens of picoseconds. Furthermore, spin states in chiral crystals will be further tuned by the external magnetic field to demonstrate the dependence of spin-photon coupling effects on the magnetic field.

Spin-valley dynamics of electrically driven ambipolar carbon-nanotube quantum dots

An ambipolar n-p double quantum dot defined by potential variation along a semiconducting carbon-nanotube is considered. We focus on the (1e,1h) charge configuration with a single excess electron of the conduction band confined in the n-type dot and a single missing electron in the valence band state of the p-type dot for which lifting of the Pauli blockade of the current was observed in the electric-dipole spin resonance (Laird et al 2013 Nat. Nanotechnol. 8 565). The dynamics of the system driven by periodic electric field is studied with the Floquet theory and the time-dependent configuration interaction method with the single-electron spin-valley-orbitals determined for atomistic tight-binding Hamiltonian. We find that the transitions lifting the Pauli blockade are strongly influenced by coupling to a vacuum state with an empty n dot and a fully filled p dot. The coupling shifts the transition energies and strongly modifies the effective g factors for axial magnetic field. The coupling is modulated by the bias between the dots but it appears effective for surprisingly large energy splitting between the (1e,1h) ground state and the vacuum (0e, 0h) state. Multiphoton transitions and high harmonic generation effects are also discussed.

Spin–orbit coupling in nearly metallic chiral carbon nanotubes: a density-functional based study

An accurate implementation of spin–orbit interactions in a density-functional theory framework is presented, including both core and valence orbital contributions, thus encompassing the full system potential.

Electronic and Optical Properties of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes

In this article, we overview our recent theoretical works on electronic and optical properties of carbon nanotubes by going from the background to the perspectives. Electronic Raman spectra of metallic carbon nanotubes give a new picture of Raman processes. Thermoelectricity of semiconducting nanotubes gives a general concept of the confinement effect on the thermoelectric power factor. Selective excitation of only a single phonon mode is proposed by the pulsed train technique of coherent phonon spectroscopy. Occurrence of both two and four fold degeneracy in the carbon nanotube quantum dot is explained by difference group velocities and the intra/inter valley scattering near the hexagonal corner of the Brillouin zone.

Curvature effects in the band structure of carbon nanotubes including spin-orbit coupling

The Kane-Mele model was previously used to describe effective spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) in graphene. Here we extend this model and also incorporate curvature effects to analyze the combined influence of SOC and curvature on the band structure of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The extended model then reproduces the chirality-dependent asymmetric electron-hole splitting for semiconducting CNTs and in the band structure for metallic CNTs shows an opening of the band gap and a change of the Fermi wave vector with spin. For chiral semiconducting CNTs with large chiral angle we show that the spin-splitting configuration of bands near the Fermi energy depends on the value of mod(2n + m, 3).

Spin-orbit interaction in bent carbon nanotubes: resonant spin transitions

We develop an effective tight-binding Hamiltonian for spin-orbit (SO) interaction in bent carbon nanotubes (CNT) for the electrons forming the π bonds between the nearest neighbor atoms. We account for the bend of the CNT and the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction which introduce mixing of π and σ bonds between the p(z) orbitals along the CNT. The effect contributes to the main origin of the SO coupling-the folding of the graphene plane into the nanotube. We discuss the bend-related contribution of the SO coupling for resonant single-electron spin and charge transitions in a double quantum dot. We report that although the effect of the bend-related SO coupling is weak for the energy spectra, it produces a pronounced increase of the spin transition rates driven by an external electric field. We find that spin-flipping transitions driven by alternate electric fields have usually larger rates when accompanied by charge shift from one dot to the other. Spin-flipping transition rates are non-monotonic functions of the driving amplitude since they are masked by stronger spin-conserving charge transitions. We demonstrate that the fractional resonances-counterparts of multiphoton transitions for atoms in strong laser fields-occurring in electrically controlled nanodevices already at moderate ac amplitudes-can be used to maintain the spin-flip transitions.

Symmetries of quantum transport with Rashba spin–orbit: graphene spintronics

The lack of some spatial symmetries in planar devices with Rashba spin–orbit interactions opens up the possibility of producing spin polarized electrical currents in the absence of external magnetic fields or magnetic impurities.

Gate-dependent orbital magnetic moments in carbon nanotubes

We investigate how the orbital magnetic moments of electron and hole states in a carbon nanotube quantum dot depend on the number of carriers on the dot. Low temperature transport measurements are carried out in a setup where the device can be rotated in an applied magnetic field, thus enabling accurate alignment with the nanotube axis. The field dependence of the level structure is measured by excited state spectroscopy and excellent correspondence with a single-particle calculation is found. In agreement with band structure calculations we find a decrease of the orbital magnetic moment with increasing electron or hole occupation of the dot, with a scale given by the band gap of the nanotube.
