Novel dielectric anomaly in the hole-doped La(2)Cu(1-x)Li(x)O(4) and La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) insulators: signature of an electronic glassy state

Nanoscale inhomogeneity of charge density waves dynamics in La2−xSrxNiO4

While stripe phases with broken rotational symmetry of charge density are known to emerge in doped strongly correlated perovskites, the dynamics and heterogeneity of spatial ordering remain elusive. Here we shed light on the temperature dependent lattice motion and the spatial nanoscale phase separation of charge density wave order in the archetypal striped phase in La2−xSrxNiO4+y (LSNO) perovskite using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) joint with scanning micro X-ray diffraction (SµXRD). While it is known that the CDW in 1/8 doped cuprates shows a remarkable stability we report the CDW motion dynamics by XPCS in nickelates with an anomalous quantum glass regime at low temperature, T < 65 K, and the expected thermal melting at higher temperature 65 < T < 120 K. The nanoscale CDW puddles with a shorter correlation length are more mobile than CDW puddles with a longer correlation length. The direct imaging of nanoscale spatial inhomogeneity of CDW by scanning micro X-ray diffraction (SµXRD) shows a nanoscale landscape of percolating short range dynamic CDW puddles competing with large quasi-static CDW puddles giving rise to a novel form of nanoscale phase separation of the incommensurate stripes order landscape.

The effect of antisite disorder on magnetic and exchange bias properties of Gd-substituted Y2CoMnO6double perovskite

Combining experimental investigations and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we report physical and magnetic properties of Gd-substituted Y₂CoMnO₆double perovskite, which are strongly influenced by antisite-disorder-driven spin configurations. On Gd doping, Co and Mn ions are present in mixed-valence (Co³⁺, Co²⁺, Mn³⁺and Mn⁴⁺) states. Multiple magnetic transitions have been observed: (i) paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition is found to occur atT_C= 95.5 K, (ii) antiferromagnetic transition atT_N= 47 K is driven by3d-4fpolarization and antisite disorder present in the sample, (iii) change in magnetization belowT⩽20 K, primarily originating from Gd ordering, as revealed from our DFT calculations. AC susceptibility measurement confirms the absence of any spin-glass or cluster-glass phases in this material. A significantly large exchange bias effect (HEB= 1.07 kOe) is found to occur below 47 K due to interfaces of FM and AFM clusters created by antisite-disorder.

Nanoscale Phase Separation of Incommensurate and Quasi-Commensurate Spin Stripes in Low Temperature Spin Glass of La2−xSrxNiO4

While spin striped phases in La2−xSrxNiO4+y for 0.25 < x < 0.33 are the archetypal case of a 1D spin density wave (SDW) phase in doped antiferromagnetic strongly correlated perovskites, few information is available on the SDW spatial organization. In this context, we have measured the spatial variation of the wave vector of the SDW reflection profile by scanning micro X-ray diffractions with a coherent beam. We obtained evidence of a SDW order–disorder transition by lowering a high temperature phase (T > 50 K) to a low temperature phase (T < 50 K). We have identified quasi-commensurate spin stripe puddles in the ordered phase at 50 < T < 70 K, while the low temperature spin glassy phase presents a nanoscale phase separation of T = 30 K, with the coexistence of quasi-commensurate and incommensurate spin stripe puddles assigned to the interplay of quantum frustration and strong electronic correlations.

Large Magnetoelectric Coupling in the Thin Film of Multiferroic CuO

We report observation of large magnetoelectric coupling in an epitaxial thin film of multiferroic CuO grown on the (100)MgO substrate by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The film is characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectrometry. The crystallographic structure of the film turns out to be monoclinic (space group C2/c) with [111]CuO||[100]MgO "out-of-plane" epitaxy and "in-plane" domain structure. The lattice misfit strain is found to vary within ±1-3%. The dc resistivity, magnetization, dielectric spectroscopy, and remanent ferroeletric polarization have been measured across 80-300 K. The dielectric constant is found to decrease by >20% under a moderate magnetic field of ∼18 kOe while the remanent ferroelectric polarization, emerging at the onset of magnetic transition (T _N ∼ 175 K), decreases by nearly 50% under ∼18 kOe field. These results could assume importance as the strain-free bulk CuO does not exhibit magnetoelectric coupling within such magnetic field regime. The strain-induced large magnetoelectric coupling in the CuO thin film would generate new possibility of further strain tuning to observe room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroicity suitable for scores of applications such as memories, sensors, energy-harvesting devices, generators, amplifiers, and so forth.

Colossal permittivity behavior and its origin in rutile (Mg1/3Ta2/3)xTi1-xO2

This work investigates the synthesis, chemical composition, defect structures and associated dielectric properties of (Mg²⁺, Ta⁵⁺) co-doped rutile TiO₂ polycrystalline ceramics with nominal compositions of (Mg²⁺_1/3Ta⁵⁺_2/3)_xTi_1−xO₂. Colossal permittivity (>7000) with a low dielectric loss (e.g. 0.002 at 1 kHz) across a broad frequency/temperature range can be achieved at x = 0.5% after careful optimization of process conditions. Both experimental and theoretical evidence indicates such a colossal permittivity and low dielectric loss intrinsically originate from the intragrain polarization that links to the electron-pinned \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\bf{M}}{{\bf{g}}}_{{\bf{T}}{\bf{i}}}^{{\prime}{\prime} }+{{\bf{V}}}_{{\bf{O}}}^{\bullet \bullet }+{\bf{2}}{\bf{T}}{{\bf{a}}}_{{\bf{T}}{\bf{i}}}^{\bullet }+{\bf{2}}{\bf{T}}{{\bf{i}}}_{{\bf{T}}{\bf{i}}}^{\prime}$$\end{document}MgTi′′+VO••+2TaTi•+2TiTi′ defect clusters with a specific configuration, different from the defect cluster form previously reported in tri-/pent-valent ion co-doped rutile TiO₂. This work extends the research on colossal permittivity and defect formation to bi-/penta-valent ion co-doped rutile TiO₂ and elucidates a likely defect cluster model for this system. We therefore believe these results will benefit further development of colossal permittivity materials and advance the understanding of defect chemistry in solids.

Antisite disorder driven spontaneous exchange bias effect in La(2-x)Sr(x) CoMnO₆ (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 1)

Doping at the rare-earth site by divalent alkaline-earth ions in perovskite lattice has witnessed a variety of magnetic and electronic orders with spatially correlated charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Here, we report an antisite disorder driven spontaneous exchange bias effect as a result of hole carrier (Sr(2+)) doping in La(2-x)Sr(x)CoMnO6 (0  <  x  <  1) double perovskites. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have evidenced an increase in disorder with the increase of Sr content up to x  =  0.5 and thereby a decrease from x  =  0.5 to 1. X-ray absorption spectroscopy has revealed that only Co is present in the mixed valence of Co(2+) and Co(3+) states with Sr doping to compensate the charge neutrality. Magnetotransport is strongly correlated with the increase of antisite disorder. The antisite disorder at the B-site interrupts the long-range ferromagnetic order by introducing various magnetic interactions and instigates reentrant glassy dynamics, phase separation and canted type antiferromagnetic behavior with the decrease of temperature. This leads to a novel magnetic microstructure with unidirectional anisotropy that causes a spontaneous exchange bias effect that can be tuned with the amount of antisite disorder.

Investigation on temperature stability performance of giant permittivity (In + Nb) in co-doped TiO2 ceramic: a crucial aspect for practical electronic applications

In this work, it was shown that the crucial aspect for practical applications of a newly discovered (In + Nb) co-doped TiO₂ material is the temperature stability of its dielectric permittivity (ε′).

Ferroelectricity in underdoped La-based cuprates

Doping a “parent” antiferromagnetic Mott insulator in cuprates leads to short-range electronic correlations and eventually to high-T_c superconductivity. However, the nature of charge correlations in the lightly doped cuprates remains unclear. Understanding the intermediate electronic phase in the phase diagram (between the parent insulator and the high-T_c superconductor) is expected to elucidate the complexity both inside and outside the superconducting dome, and in particular in the underdoped region. One such phase is ferroelectricity whose origin and relation to the properties of high-T_c superconductors is subject of current research. Here we demonstrate that ferroelectricity and the associated magnetoelectric coupling are in fact common in La-214 cuprates namely, La_2-xSr_xCuO₄, La₂Li_xCu_1-xO₄ and La₂CuO_4+x. It is proposed that ferroelectricity may result from local CuO₆ octahedral distortions, associated with the dopant atoms and clustering of the doped charge carriers, which break spatial inversion symmetry at the local scale whereas magnetoelectric coupling can be tuned through Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Dielectric spectroscopy on organic charge-transfer salts

This topical review provides an overview of the dielectric properties of a variety of organic charge-transfer salts, based on both, data reported in literature and our own experimental results. Moreover, we discuss in detail the different processes that can contribute to the dielectric response of these materials. We concentrate on the family of the 1D (TMTTF)2 X systems and the 2D BEDT-TTF-based charge-transfer salts, which in recent years have attracted considerable interest due to their often intriguing dielectric properties. We will mainly focus on the occurrence of electronic ferroelectricity in these systems, which also includes examples of multiferroicity.

Universality of modulation length and time exponents

We study systems with a crossover parameter λ, such as the temperature T, which has a threshold value λ(*) across which the correlation function changes from exhibiting fixed wavelength (or time period) modulations to continuously varying modulation lengths (or times). We introduce a hitherto unknown exponent ν(L) characterizing the universal nature of this crossover and compute its value in general instances. This exponent, similar to standard correlation length exponents, is obtained from motion of the poles of the momentum (or frequency) space correlation functions in the complex k-plane (or ω-plane) as the parameter λ is varied. Near the crossover (i.e., for λ→λ(*)), the characteristic modulation wave vector K(R) in the variable modulation length "phase" is related to that in the fixed modulation length "phase" q via |K(R)-q|[proportionality]|T-T(*)|(νL). We find, in general, that ν(L)=1/2. In some special instances, ν(L) may attain other rational values. We extend this result to general problems in which the eigenvalue of an operator or a pole characterizing general response functions may attain a constant real (or imaginary) part beyond a particular threshold value λ(*). We discuss extensions of this result to multiple other arenas. These include the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model. By extending our considerations, we comment on relations pertaining not only to the modulation lengths (or times), but also to the standard correlation lengths (or times). We introduce the notion of a Josephson time scale. We comment on the presence of aperiodic "chaotic" modulations in "soft-spin" and other systems. These relate to glass-type features. We discuss applications to Fermi systems, with particular application to metal to band insulator transitions, change of Fermi surface topology, divergent effective masses, Dirac systems, and topological insulators. Both regular periodic and glassy (and spatially chaotic behavior) may be found in strongly correlated electronic systems.

Detection of hidden structures for arbitrary scales in complex physical systems

Recent decades have experienced the discovery of numerous complex materials. At the root of the complexity underlying many of these materials lies a large number of contending atomic- and largerscale configurations. In order to obtain a more detailed understanding of such systems, we need tools that enable the detection of pertinent structures on all spatial and temporal scales. Towards this end, we suggest a new method that applies to both static and dynamic systems which invokes ideas from network analysis and information theory. Our approach efficiently identifies basic unit cells, topological defects, and candidate natural structures. The method is particularly useful where a clear definition of order is lacking, and the identified features may constitute a natural point of departure for further analysis.
