Delocalized fermions in underdoped cuprate superconductors

Superconductivity in nickel-based 112 systems

Superconductivity has been discovered recently in infinite-layer nickel-based 112 thin films R_1−xA_xNiO₂ (R = La, Nd, Pr and A = Sr, Ca). They are isostructural to the infinite-layer cuprate (Ca,Sr)CuO₂ and are supposed to have a formal Ni 3d⁹ valence, thus providing a new platform to study the unconventional pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductors. This important discovery immediately triggers a huge amount of innovative scientific curiosity in the field. In this paper, we try to give an overview of the recent research progress on the newly found superconducting nickelate systems, both from experimental and theoretical aspects. We mainly focus on the electronic structures, magnetic excitations, phase diagrams and superconducting gaps, and finally make some open discussions for possible pairing symmetries in Ni-based 112 systems.

Evolution from a nodeless gap to d(x(2)-y(2))-wave in underdoped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), it is revealed that the low-energy electronic excitation spectra of highly underdoped superconducting and nonsuperconducting La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) cuprates are gapped along the entire underlying Fermi surface at low temperatures. We show how the gap function evolves to a d(x(2)-y(2)) form with increasing temperature or doping, consistent with the vast majority of ARPES studies of cuprates. Our results provide essential information for uncovering the symmetry of the order parameter(s) in strongly underdoped cuprates, which is a prerequisite for understanding the pairing mechanism and how superconductivity emerges from a Mott insulator.

Phase competition in trisected superconducting dome

A detailed phenomenology of low energy excitations is a crucial starting point for microscopic understanding of complex materials, such as the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Because of its unique momentum-space discrimination, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is ideally suited for this task in the cuprates, where emergent phases, particularly superconductivity and the pseudogap, have anisotropic gap structure in momentum space. We present a comprehensive doping- and temperature-dependence ARPES study of spectral gaps in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ), covering much of the superconducting portion of the phase diagram. In the ground state, abrupt changes in near-nodal gap phenomenology give spectroscopic evidence for two potential quantum critical points, p = 0.19 for the pseudogap phase and p = 0.076 for another competing phase. Temperature dependence reveals that the pseudogap is not static below T(c) and exists p > 0.19 at higher temperatures. Our data imply a revised phase diagram that reconciles conflicting reports about the endpoint of the pseudogap in the literature, incorporates phase competition between the superconducting gap and pseudogap, and highlights distinct physics at the edge of the superconducting dome.

High-field μSR studies of superconducting and magnetic correlations in cuprates above T(c)

The advent of high transverse field muon spin rotation (TF-μSR) has led to recent μSR investigations of the magnetic field response of cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature T(c). Here the results of such experiments on hole-doped cuprates are reviewed. Although these investigations are currently ongoing, it is clear that the effects of high field on the internal magnetic field distribution of these materials is dependent upon competition between superconductivity and magnetism. In La(2 - x)Sr(x)CuO(4) the response to the external field above T(c) is dominated by heterogeneous spin magnetism. However, the magnetism that dominates the observed inhomogeneous line broadening below x ∼ 0.19 is overwhelmed by the emergence of a completely different kind of magnetism in the heavily overdoped regime. The origin of the magnetism above x ∼ 0.19 is probably related to intrinsic disorder, but the systematic evolution of the magnetism with doping changes in the doping range beyond the superconducting 'dome'. In contrast, the width of the internal field distribution of underdoped Y Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) above T(c) is observed to track T(c) and the density of superconducting carriers. This observation suggests that the magnetic response above T(c) is not dominated by electronic moments, but rather inhomogeneous fluctuating superconductivity. The spatially inhomogeneous response of Y Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) to the applied field may be a means of minimizing energy, rather than being caused by intrinsic disorder.

Thermal conductivity, Fermi pockets and superconductivity in underdoped cuprates

The electronic contribution to thermal conductivity is studied in models of underdoped cuprates where the normal state has a pocketed Fermi surface with circumference ∼x (hole concentration) and the superconducting state is formed by opening a gap in the Fermi pocket. The physical consequences of the Fermi pocket are studied by comparing the thermal conductivity computed in four different models: (1) an ordinary d-wave superconductor with four Dirac Fermi points; (2) a normal metal with a pocketed Fermi surface; (3) a superconductor formed by spinon-holon binding in the t-J model; (4) a phenomenological d-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor with superconductivity formed by opening a gap on the pocketed Fermi surface. Our results suggest that thermal conductivity provides useful information to distinguish between different scenarios of the normal-to-superconducting transition in underdoped cuprates.

Breakdown of universal transport in correlated d-wave superconductors

The prediction and observation of low-temperature universal thermal conductivity in cuprates has served as a keystone of theoretical approaches to the superconducting state, but recent measurements on underdoped samples show strong violations of this apparently fundamental property of d-wave nodal quasiparticles. Here, we show that the breakdown of universality may be understood as the consequence of disorder-induced magnetic droplets arising from enhanced antiferromagnetic correlations in the underdoped state, even as these same correlations protect the nodal density of states.

The Ground State of the Pseudogap in Cuprate Superconductors

We present studies of the electronic structure of La(2-x)BaxCuO4, a system where the superconductivity is strongly suppressed as static spin and charge orders or "stripes" develop near the doping level of x = (1/8). Using angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy, we detect an energy gap at the Fermi surface with magnitude consistent with d-wave symmetry and with linear density of states, vanishing only at four nodal points, even when superconductivity disappears at x = (1/8). Thus, the nonsuperconducting, striped state at x = (1/8) is consistent with a phase-incoherent d-wave superconductor whose Cooper pairs form spin-charge-ordered structures instead of becoming superconducting.

Onset of a Boson mode at the superconducting critical point of underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy

The thermal conductivity kappa of underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy was measured in the T-->0 limit as a function of hole concentration p across the superconducting critical point at pSC identical with 5.0%. The evolution of bosonic and fermionic contributions to kappa was tracked as the doping level evolved continuously in each of our samples. For p< or =pSC, we observe a T3 component in kappa which we attribute to the boson excitations of a phase with long-range spin or charge order. Fermionic transport, observed as a T-linear term in kappa which persists unaltered through pSC, violates the Wiedemann-Franz law, since the electrical resistivity varies as log(1/T) and grows with decreasing p.

Superfluid density of strongly underdoped cuprate superconductors from a four-dimensional XY model

A new phenomenology is proposed for the superfluid density rhos of strongly underdoped cuprate superconductors based on recent data for ultraclean single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7-x. We show that the puzzling departure from Uemura scaling and the decline of the slope as the Tc=0 quantum critical point is approached can be understood in terms of the renormalization of quasiparticle effective charge by quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase. We then employ a (3+1)-dimensional XY model to calculate, within particular approximations, the renormalization of rhos and its slope, explain the new phenomenology, and predict its eventual demise close to the quantum critical point.

Effective theory of high-temperature superconductors

The field theory of a fluctuating d-wave superconductor is constructed and proposed as an effective description of superconducting cuprates at low energies. The theory is used to resolve a puzzle posed by recent experiments on superfluid density in severely underdoped YBa2(Cu3)O(6+x). In particular, the overall temperature dependence of the superfluid density at low dopings is argued to be described well by the strongly anisotropic weakly interacting Bose gas, and thus approximately linear in temperature with an almost doping-independent slope.
