Theory and experiments for disordered elastic manifolds, depinning, avalanches, and sandpiles

Domain walls in magnets, vortex lattices in superconductors, contact lines at depinning, and many other systems can be modeled as an elastic system subject to quenched disorder. The ensuing field theory possesses a well-controlled perturbative expansion around its upper critical dimension. Contrary to standard field theory, the renormalization group (RG) flow involves a function, the disorder correlator Δ(w), and is therefore termed the functional RG. Δ(w) is a physical observable, the auto-correlation function of the center of mass of the elastic manifold. In this review, we give a pedagogical introduction into its phenomenology and techniques. This allows us to treat both equilibrium (statics), and depinning (dynamics). Building on these techniques, avalanche observables are accessible: distributions of size, duration, and velocity, as well as the spatial and temporal shape. Various equivalences between disordered elastic manifolds, and sandpile models exist: an elastic string driven at a point and the Oslo model; disordered elastic manifolds and Manna sandpiles; charge density waves and Abelian sandpiles or loop-erased random walks. Each of the mappings between these systems requires specific techniques, which we develop, including modeling of discrete stochastic systems via coarse-grained stochastic equations of motion, super-symmetry techniques, and cellular automata. Stronger than quadratic nearest-neighbor interactions lead to directed percolation, and non-linear surface growth with additional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) terms. On the other hand, KPZ without disorder can be mapped back to disordered elastic manifolds, either on the directed polymer for its steady state, or a single particle for its decay. Other topics covered are the relation between functional RG and replica symmetry breaking, and random-field magnets. Emphasis is given to numerical and experimental tests of the theory.

A numerical study of the statistics of roughness parameters for fluctuating interfaces

Self-affine rough interfaces are ubiquitous in experimental systems, and display characteristic scaling properties as a signature of the nature of disorder in their supporting medium, i.e. of the statistical features of its heterogeneities. Different methods have been used to extract roughness information from such self-affine structures, and in particular their scaling exponents and associated prefactors. Notably, for an experimental characterization of roughness features, it is of paramount importance to properly assess sample-to-sample fluctuations of roughness parameters. Here, by performing scaling analysis based on displacement correlation functions in real and reciprocal space, we compute statistical properties of the roughness parameters. As an ideal, artifact-free reference case study and particularly targeting finite-size systems, we consider three cases of numerically simulated one-dimensional interfaces: (i) elastic lines under thermal fluctuations and free of disorder, (ii) directed polymers in equilibrium with a disordered energy landscape, and (iii) elastic lines in the critical depinning state when the external applied driving force equals the depinning force set by disorder. Our results show that sample-to-sample fluctuations are rather large when measuring the roughness exponent. These fluctuations are also relevant for roughness amplitudes. Therefore a minimum of independent interface realizations (at least a few tens in our numerical simulations) should be used to guarantee sufficient statistical averaging, an issue often overlooked in experimental reports.

Racetrack memory based on in-plane-field controlled domain-wall pinning

Magnetic domain wall motion could be the key to the next generation of data storage devices, shift registers without mechanically moving parts. Various concepts of such so-called ‘racetrack memories’ have been developed, but they are usually plagued by the need for high current densities or complex geometrical requirements. We introduce a new device concept, based on the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), of which the importance in magnetic thin films was recently discovered. In this device the domain walls are moved solely by magnetic fields. Unidirectionality is created utilizing the recent observation that the strength with which a domain wall is pinned at an anisotropy barrier depends on the direction of the in-plane field due to the chiral nature of DMI. We demonstrate proof-of-principle experiments to verify that unidirectional domain-wall motion is achieved and investigate several material stacks for this novel device including a detailed analysis of device performance for consecutive pinning and depinning processes.

Thermal rounding exponent of the depinning transition of an elastic string in a random medium

We study numerically thermal effects at the depinning transition of an elastic string driven in a two-dimensional uncorrelated disorder potential. The velocity of the string exactly at the sample critical force is shown to behave as V~T(ψ), with ψ the thermal rounding exponent. We show that the computed value of the thermal rounding exponent, ψ=0.15, is robust and accounts for the different scaling properties of several observables both in the steady state and in the transient relaxation to the steady state. In particular, we show the compatibility of the thermal rounding exponent with the scaling properties of the steady-state structure factor, the universal short-time dynamics of the transient velocity at the sample critical force, and the velocity scaling function describing the joint dependence of the steady-state velocity on the external drive and temperature.

Maximum relative height of elastic interfaces in random media

The distribution of the maximal relative height (MRH) of self-affine one-dimensional elastic interfaces in a random potential is studied. We analyze the ground-state configuration at zero driving force, and the critical configuration exactly at the depinning threshold, both for the random-manifold and random-periodic universality classes. These configurations are sampled by exact numerical methods, and their MRH distributions are compared with those with the same roughness exponent and boundary conditions, but produced by independent Fourier modes with normally distributed amplitudes. Using Pickands' theorem we derive an exact analytical description for the right tail of the latter. After properly rescaling the MRH distributions we find that corrections from the Gaussian independent modes approximation are, in general, small, as previously found for the average width distribution of depinning configurations. In the large size limit all corrections are finite except for the ground state in the random-periodic class whose MRH distribution becomes, for periodic boundary conditions, indistinguishable from the Airy distribution. We find that the MRH distributions are, in general, sensitive to changes of boundary conditions.

Diffusion between evolving interfaces

Diffusion in an evolving environment is studied by continuous-time Monte Carlo simulations. Diffusion is modeled by continuous-time random walkers on a lattice, in a dynamic environment provided by bubbles between two one-dimensional interfaces driven symmetrically towards each other. For one-dimensional random walkers constrained by the interfaces, the bubble size distribution dominates diffusion. For two-dimensional random walkers, it is also controlled by the topography and dynamics of the interfaces. The results of the one-dimensional case are recovered in the limit where the interfaces are strongly driven. Even with simple hard-core repulsion between the interfaces and the particles, diffusion is found to depend strongly on the details of the dynamical rules of particles close to the interfaces.

Dynamic binding of driven interfaces in coupled ultrathin ferromagnetic layers

We demonstrate experimentally dynamic interface binding in a system consisting of two coupled ferromagnetic layers. While domain walls in each layer have different velocity-field responses, for two broad ranges of the driving field H, walls in the two layers are bound and move at a common velocity. The bound states have their own velocity-field response and arise when the isolated wall velocities in each layer are close, a condition which always occurs as H→0. Several features of the bound states are reproduced using a one-dimensional model, illustrating their general nature.
