Surface-enhanced plasmon splitting in a liquid-crystal-coated gold nanoparticle

Magnified charge carrier conduction, permittivity, and mesomorphic properties of columnar structure of a room temperature discotic liquid crystalline material due to the dispersion of low concentration ferroelectric nanoparticles

Liquid crystal nanocomposites have been a hot topic of research due to optimization of physical properties with such blending. There are several reports on enhancement of physical properties of nematic liquid crystals due to the blending of the nanomaterials. L. M. Lopatina and J. V. Selinger [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 197802 (2009)]10.1103/PhysRevLett.102.197802 have even proposed a theory based on experimental results for the enhancement of the properties of the nematic mesophase in the presence of ferroelectric nanoparticles. However, discotic liquid crystal nanocomposites are less studied. In the present experimental work, we have studied the effect of ferroelectric (BaTiO_{3}) nanoparticles on a room temperature discotic liquid crystalline material, namely 1,5-dihydroxy-2,3,6,7-tetrakis(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)-9,10-anthraquinone. We investigated the physical properties of low concentration ferroelectric nanoparticle dispersed discotic columnar structure, using calorimetric, optical, x-ray diffraction, and dielectric spectroscopy tools. Results show that inclusion of ferroelectric nanoparticles in the discotic matrix consolidates the stability of the columnar matrix of the Col_{h} phase by virtue of their ferroic nature. An enhancement in charge carrier conductivity by several orders of magnitude at ambient conditions has been observed which makes such systems highly appropriate for one-dimensional conductors. Low concentration of BaTiO_{3} nanoparticles substantially enhanced permittivity of the system also. A molecular relaxation mode has been observed in the middle frequency range of the dielectric spectra. Enhancement of these important parameters could be possible due to the ferroelectric nature of the dispersed nanoparticles.

Realizing optical bistability and tristability in plasmonic coated nanoparticles with radial-anisotropy and Kerr-nonlinearity

We theoretically study the optical bistability and tristability in plasmonic coated nanospheres containing the nonlinear plasmonic shell and the dielectric core with radial anisotropy. Based on self-consistent mean-field approximation, we establish the relationship between the local field in the shell and the applied incident field, taking into account the Lorentz local field. One or two optical bistabilities and even optical tristability can be observed. Especially, there are two critical geometric parameters between which two optical bistabilities exist. Physically, two optical bistablities result from the excitations of two surface plasmonic resonant modes in the inner and outer interfaces of coated nanospheres, which are well reflected from the spectral representation with two poles. Moreover, the involvement of the radial anisotropy is quite essential to realize the optical tristability. Further discussion on the field-induced tuning of the reflectance reveals the macroscopic properties of this nonlinear optical structure, which provides a potential candidate for designing multi-stable optical devices at the nanoscale.

Perspectives in Liquid-Crystal-Aided Nanotechnology and Nanoscience

The research field of liquid crystals and their applications is recently changing from being largely focused on display applications and optical shutter elements in various fields, to quite novel and diverse applications in the area of nanotechnology and nanoscience. Functional nanoparticles have recently been used to a significant extent to modify the physical properties of liquid crystals by the addition of ferroelectric and magnetic particles of different shapes, such as arbitrary and spherical, rods, wires and discs. Also, particles influencing optical properties are increasingly popular, such as quantum dots, plasmonic, semiconductors and metamaterials. The self-organization of liquid crystals is exploited to order templates and orient nanoparticles. Similarly, nanoparticles such as rods, nanotubes and graphene oxide are shown to form lyotropic liquid crystal phases in the presence of isotropic host solvents. These effects lead to a wealth of novel applications, many of which will be reviewed in this publication.

Silica aerogel films via ambient pressure drying for broadband reflectors

This manuscript demonstrates the advantages of silica aerogel films over nanoparticles in broadening the reflection bandwidth of cholesteric liquid crystals.

Tailored Surfaces/Assemblies for Molecular Plasmonics and Plasmonic Molecular Electronics

Molecular plasmonics uses and explores molecule-plasmon interactions on metal nanostructures for spectroscopic, nanophotonic, and nanoelectronic devices. This review focuses on tailored surfaces/assemblies for molecular plasmonics and describes active molecular plasmonic devices in which functional molecules and polymers change their structural, electrical, and/or optical properties in response to external stimuli and that can dynamically tune the plasmonic properties. We also explore an emerging research field combining molecular plasmonics and molecular electronics.

Scientific developments of liquid crystal-based optical memory: a review

The memory behavior in liquid crystals (LCs), although rarely observed, has made very significant headway over the past three decades since their discovery in nematic type LCs. It has gone from a mere scientific curiosity to application in variety of commodities. The memory element formed by numerous LCs have been protected by patents, and some commercialized, and used as compensation to non-volatile memory devices, and as memory in personal computers and digital cameras. They also have the low cost, large area, high speed, and high density memory needed for advanced computers and digital electronics. Short and long duration memory behavior for industrial applications have been obtained from several LC materials, and an LC memory with interesting features and applications has been demonstrated using numerous LCs. However, considerable challenges still exist in searching for highly efficient, stable, and long-lifespan materials and methods so that the development of useful memory devices is possible. This review focuses on the scientific and technological approach of fascinating applications of LC-based memory. We address the introduction, development status, novel design and engineering principles, and parameters of LC memory. We also address how the amalgamation of LCs could bring significant change/improvement in memory effects in the emerging field of nanotechnology, and the application of LC memory as the active component for futuristic and interesting memory devices.

Topological aspects in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

This article overviews topological excitations in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases. Various types of line defects, point defects and skyrmions are discussed. A brief review of homotopy theory is presented for use in the classification of possible topological excitations in individual quantum phases. Some recent experiments are also reviewed.

Anisotropic shift of surface plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles doped in nematic liquid crystal

Study of the liquid crystal (LC) director around nanoparticles has been an important topic of research very recently, since it allows design and fabrication of next-generation LC devices that are impossible in the past. In our experiment, alkanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were dispersed in nematic LC. Analysis of the LC director around GNPs was performed by investigating the behavior of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) absorption peaks of the GNPs using spectrophotometry technique. It is found that the incident linearly polarized light orientated at 0°, 45°, and 90° angles with respect to the rubbing direction experiences varying interaction with the LC medium. The corresponding transmission of light reveals the anisotropic shift in wavelength of SPP peak. The anisotropic behavior of SPPs of the GNPs is in agreement with theoretical calculations.

Advances in gold nanoparticle-liquid crystal composites

We present the advancement in the research of the dispersion of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in thermotropic calamitic liquid crystals. The formation/behavior of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in GNPs is briefly described. The uniform dispersion of GNPs into liquid crystals along with two important aspects, i.e. tuning of GNP properties by liquid crystal and vice versa, are widely discussed. Overall, the article highlights the advances in the research into GNP-liquid crystal composites in terms of their scientific and technological aspects.

A self-organized anisotropic liquid-crystal plasmonic metamaterial

A composite material that leads to self organization of mesogen-coated gold nanospheres is synthesized and shows enhanced anisotropic optical properties due to synergistic effects of the mesogens intrinsic birefringence and its ability to drive the self-assembly process into highly anisotropic architectures with densely packed nanospheres. Such nanoengineered matter sustains a response beyond that achievable by its individual constituents, i.e., a metamaterial.

Growth and optical properties of Ag clusters deposited on poly(ethylene terephthalate)

The growth and concomitant evolution of the optical properties of Ag nano-clusters deposited on biaxially extruded poly(ethylene terephthalate) films is studied by reflectance difference spectroscopy. It is demonstrated by low energy ion scattering and simulated optical spectra that the clusters form a two-dimensional layer buried beneath the surface of the substrate. The experimental spectra are described by simulations in which different configurations of the host such as anisotropy, amorphization, and dilution are considered in an effective medium approach. The contribution of the anisotropic substrate is used to explain the resulting line shapes. We also discuss the role of the rate of change of the filling fraction with Ag coverage in the evolution of the spectra and the detection of the onset of coalescence by optical means.

Nanoparticles in liquid crystals and liquid crystalline nanoparticles

Combinations of liquid crystals and materials with unique features as well as properties at the nanoscale are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to recent developments, i.e., since 2007, in areas ranging from liquid crystal-nanoparticle dispersions to nanomaterials forming liquid crystalline phases after surface modification with mesogenic or promesogenic moieties. Experimental and synthetic approaches are summarized, design strategies compared, and potential as well as existing applications discussed. Finally, a critical outlook into the future of this fascinating field of liquid crystal research is provided.

Tuning of an optical dimer nanoantenna by electrically controlling its load impedance

Optical antennas are elementary units used to direct optical radiation to the nanoscale. Here we demonstrate an active control over individual antenna performances by an external electrical trigger. We find that by an in-plane command of an anisotropic load medium, the electromagnetic interaction between individual elements constituting an optical antenna can be controlled, resulting in a strong polarization and tuning response. An active command of the antenna is a prerequisite for directing light wave through the utilization of such a device.

Tunable optical metamaterial based on liquid crystal-gold nanosphere composite

Effect of the surrounding anisotropic liquid crystal medium on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) exhibited by concentrated suspensions of gold nanospheres has been investigated experimentally and compared with the Mie scattering theory. The observed polarization-sensitive SPR and the red-shift in the SPR wavelength with increasing concentration of the gold nanospheres in the liquid crystal matrix have been explained using calculations based on the Maxwell Garnet effective medium theory. Agglomeration of the gold nanospheres that could also lead to such a red-shift has been ruled out using Atomic force microscopy study of thin nanoparticle-doped smectic films obtained on solid substrates. Our study demonstrates feasibility of obtaining tunable optical bulk metamaterials based on smectic liquid crystal - nanoparticle composites.

Surface Plasmons of Metal Nanostructure Arrays: From Nanoengineering to Active Plasmonics

We developed cost-effective and high-throughput techniques to fabricate metal nanostructure arrays of various geometries on solid substrates. Surface plasmons of these nanostructure arrays were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. We systematically studied the effects of different parameters on the localized surface plasmon resonance of the nanostructure arrays. We further developed a few approaches to tailor surface plasmons for different applications. As an example of the applications of these nanostructure arrays, we demonstrated all-optical plasmonic switches/modulators based on long-range ordered Au nanodisk arrays and photoresponsive liquid crystals. The advantages of such arrays include low-cost, high-throughput, and tailorable plasmonic properties. These arrays can serve as a platform that will stimulate further progress in both fundamental research and engineering applications of plasmonics.

Electronically controlled surface plasmon dispersion and optical transmission through metallic hole arrays using liquid crystal

The enhanced optical properties of metal films periodically perforated with an array of sub-wavelength size holes have recently been widely studied in the field of surface plasmon optics. The ability to design the optical transmission of such nanostructures, which act as plasmonic crystals, by varying their geometrical parameters gives them great flexibility for numerous applications in photonics, opto-electronics, and sensing. Transforming these passive optical elements into devices that may be actively controlled has presented a new challenge. Here, we report on the realization of an electrically controlled nanostructured optical system based on the unique properties of surface plasmon polaritonic crystals in contact with a liquid crystal (LC) layer. We discuss the effect of LC layer modulation on the surface plasmon dispersion, the related optical transmission and the underlying mechanism. The reported effect may be used to achieve active spectral tuneability and switching in a wide range of applications.

Electric field tuning of plasmonic response of nanodot array in liquid crystal matrix

In this work we demonstrate the feasibility of electric-field tuning of the plasmonic spectrum of a novel gold nanodot array in a liquid crystal matrix. As opposed to previously reported microscopically observed near-field spectral tuning of individual gold nanoparticles, this system exhibits macroscopic far-field spectral tuning. The nanodot-liquid crystal matrix also displays strong anisotropic absorption characteristics, which can be effectively described as a collective ensemble within a composite matrix in the lateral dimension and a group of noninteracting individual particles in the normal direction. The effective medium model and the Mie theory are employed to describe the experimental results.
