Resonances in ferromagnetic gratings detected by microwave photoconductivity

Highly efficient heat-dissipation power driven by ferromagnetic resonance in MFe2O4 (M = Fe, Mn, Ni) ferrite nanoparticles

We experimentally demonstrated that heat-dissipation power driven by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in superparamagnetic nanoparticles of ferrimagnetic MFe₂O₄ (M = Fe, Mn, Ni) gives rise to highly localized incrementation of targeted temperatures. The power generated thereby is extremely high: two orders of magnitude higher than that of the conventional Néel-Brownian model. From micromagnetic simulation and analytical derivation, we found robust correlations between the temperature increment and the intrinsic material parameters of the damping constant as well as the saturation magnetizations of the nanoparticles’ constituent materials. Furthermore, the magnetization–dissipation-driven temperature increments were reliably manipulated by extremely low strengths of applied AC magnetic fields under resonance field conditions. Our experimental results and theoretical formulations provide for a better understanding of the effect of FMR on the efficiency of heat generation as well as straightforward guidance for the design of advanced materials for control of highly localized incrementation of targeted temperatures using magnetic particles in, for example, magnetic hyperthermia bio-applications.

Ballistic Hall Photovoltammetry of Magnetic Resonance in Individual Nanomagnets

We report on ballistic Hall photovoltammetry as a contactless probe of localized spin excitations. Spins resonating in the near field of a two-dimensional electron system are shown to induce a long range electromotive force that we calculate. We use this coupling mechanism to detect the spin wave eigenmodes of a single ferromagnet of sub-100 nm size. The high sensitivity of this detection technique, 380 spins/sqrt[Hz], and its noninvasiveness present advantages for probing magnetization dynamics and spin transport.

Note: electrical detection and quantification of Spin Rectification Effect enabled by shorted microstrip transmission line technique

We describe a shorted microstrip method for the sensitive quantification of Spin Rectification Effect (SRE). SRE for a Permalloy (Ni80Fe20) thin film strip sputtered onto SiO2 substrate is demonstrated. Our method obviates the need for simultaneous lithographic patterning of the sample and transmission line, therefore greatly simplifying the SRE measurement process. Such a shorted microstrip method can allow different contributions to SRE (anisotropic magnetoresistance, Hall effect, and anomalous Hall effect) to be simultaneously determined. Furthermore, SRE signals from unpatterned 50 nm thick Permalloy films of area dimensions 5 mm × 10 mm can even be detected.

Direct phase probing and mapping via spintronic Michelson interferometry

A spintronic approach is introduced to transform classic Michelson interferometry that probes the electromagnetic phase only. This method utilizes a nonlinear four-wave coherent mixing effect. A previously unknown striking relation between spin dynamics and the relative phase of electromagnetic waves is revealed. Spintronic Michelson interferometry allows direct probing of both the spin-resonance phase and the relative phase of electromagnetic waves via microspintronics. Thereby, it breaks new ground for cross-disciplinary applications with unprecedented capabilities, which we demonstrate via a powerful phase-resolved spin-resonance spectroscopy on magnetic materials and an on-chip technique for phase-resolved near-field microwave imaging.

Quantized spin excitations in a ferromagnetic microstrip from microwave photovoltage measurements

Quantized spin excitations in a single ferromagnetic microstrip have been measured using the microwave photovoltage technique. Several kinds of spin wave modes due to different contributions of the dipole-dipole and the exchange interactions are observed. Among them are a series of distinct dipole-exchange spin wave modes, which allow us to determine precisely the subtle spin boundary condition. A comprehensive picture for quantized spin excitations in a ferromagnet with finite size is thereby established. The dispersions of the quantized spin wave modes have two different branches separated by the saturation magnetization.

Realization of a room-temperature spin dynamo: the spin rectification effect

We demonstrate a room-temperature spin dynamo where the precession of electron spins in ferromagnets converts energy from microwaves to a bipolar current of electricity. The current/power ratio is at least 3 orders of magnitude larger than that found previously for spin-driven currents in semiconductors. The observed bipolar nature and intriguing symmetry are fully explained by the spin rectification effect via which the nonlinear combination of spin and charge dynamics creates dc currents.
