Unpaired electrons in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

Direct evidence for Cooper pairing without a spectral gap in a disordered superconductor above Tc

Composition dependence of the superconducting properties of UTe2

A better understanding of the synthesis conditions, composition and physical properties of UTe2are required to interpret previously reported unconventional superconductivity. Here we report how the superconducting properties of single crystals depend on the ratio of elements present in their synthesis by chemical vapour transport. We have obtained crystals with the highest reported ambient pressureTcand a larger superconducting heat capacity jump from a growth with a U:Te ratio different from that widely used in the literature. For these crystals, the ratio of residual heat capacity in the superconducting state to that of the normal state,γ*/γN, is significantly lower than 0.5, reported elsewhere. An upturn in the heat capacity below 200 mK is also reduced compared to other studies and is well described by a Schottky anomaly and residual Sommerfeld term rather than quantum critical behaviour.

Point-node gap structure of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe2

Low-temperature electrical and thermal transport, magnetic penetration depth, and heat capacity measurements were performed on single crystals of the actinide superconductor UTe2 to determine the structure of the superconducting energy gap. Heat transport measurements performed with currents directed along both crystallographic a and b axes reveal a vanishingly small residual fermionic component of the thermal conductivity. The magnetic field dependence of the residual term follows a rapid, quasilinear increase consistent with the presence of nodal quasiparticles, rising toward the a-axis upper critical field where the Wiedemann-Franz law is recovered. Together with a quadratic temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth up to T/T c = 0.3, these measurements provide evidence for an unconventional spin-triplet superconducting order parameter with point nodes. Millikelvin specific heat measurements performed on the same crystals used for thermal transport reveal an upturn below 300 mK that is well described by a divergent quantum-critical contribution to the density of states (DOS). Modeling this contribution with a T -1/3 power law allows restoration of the full entropy balance in the superconducting state and a resultant cubic power law for the electronic DOS below T c , consistent with the point-node gap structure determined by thermal conductivity and penetration depth measurements.

From Ising Resonant Fluctuations to Static Uniaxial Order in Antiferromagnetic and Weakly Superconducting CeCo(In_{1-x}Hg_{x})_{5}(x=0.01)

CeCo(In_{0.990}Hg_{0.010})_{5} is a charge doped variant of the d-wave CoCoIn_{5} superconductor with coexistent antiferromagnetic and superconducting transitions occurring at T_{N}=3.4 and T_{c}=1.4  K, respectively. We use neutron diffraction and spectroscopy to show that the magnetic resonant fluctuations present in the parent superconducting phase are replaced by collinear c-axis magnetic order with three-dimensional Ising critical fluctuations. No low-energy transverse spin fluctuations are observable in this doping-induced antiferromagnetic phase and the dynamic resonant spectral weight predominately shifts to the elastic channel. Static (τ>0.2  ns) collinear Ising order is proximate to superconductivity in CeCoIn_{5} and is stabilized through hole doping with Hg.

Investigation of the superconducting gap structure in κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 and κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br by means of thermal-conductivity measurements

We report temperature-dependent thermal-conductivity, κ, measurements on the layered quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductors κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂Cu(NCS)₂ and κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂Cu[N(CN)₂]Br down to 160 mK. The results for κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂Cu(NCS)₂ may be consistent with a nodal superconducting (SC) gap structure as indicated by a non-negligible remnant linear contribution when [Formula: see text] is extrapolated to [Formula: see text]. For κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂Cu[N(CN)₂]Br, contrary to expectations, higher κ values are observed in the superconducting regime as compared to the normal, high-field state evidencing a dominant phonon contribution to κ in the superconducting state. The strong increase of κ in the normal state below T _c for both samples indicates strong electron-phonon scattering. Our results highlight the need for thermal-conductivity measurements performed down to significantly lower temperatures to determine the symmetry of the SC gap.

Robust upward dispersion of the neutron spin resonance in the heavy fermion superconductor Ce1-xYbxCoIn5

The neutron spin resonance is a collective magnetic excitation that appears in the unconventional copper oxide, iron pnictide and heavy fermion superconductors. Although the resonance is commonly associated with a spin-exciton due to the d(s^±)-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, it has also been proposed to be a magnon-like excitation appearing in the superconducting state. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that the resonance in the heavy fermion superconductor Ce_1−xYb_xCoIn₅ with x=0, 0.05 and 0.3 has a ring-like upward dispersion that is robust against Yb-doping. By comparing our experimental data with a random phase approximation calculation using the electronic structure and the momentum dependence of the -wave superconducting gap determined from scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) for CeCoIn₅, we conclude that the robust upward-dispersing resonance mode in Ce_1−xYb_xCoIn₅ is inconsistent with the downward dispersion predicted within the spin-exciton scenario.

The mechanism of collective magnetic excitations in unconventional superconductors remains controversial. Here, Song et al. show neutron spin resonance in a heavy fermion superconductor Ce_1-xYb_xCoIn₅, implying magnon-like excitation rather than spin-exciton type.

Quantum Critical Quasiparticle Scattering within the Superconducting State of CeCoIn_{5}

The thermal conductivity κ of the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn_{5} was measured in the normal and superconducting states as a function of temperature T and magnetic field H, for a current and field parallel to the [100] direction. Inside the superconducting state, when the field is lower than the upper critical field H_{c2}, κ/T is found to increase as T→0, just as in a metal and in contrast to the behavior of all known superconductors. This is due to unpaired electrons on part of the Fermi surface, which dominate the transport above a certain field. The evolution of κ/T with field reveals that the electron-electron scattering (or transport mass m^{⋆}) of those unpaired electrons diverges as H→H_{c2} from below, in the same way that it does in the normal state as H→H_{c2} from above. This shows that the unpaired electrons sense the proximity of the field-tuned quantum critical point of CeCoIn_{5} at H^{⋆}=H_{c2} even from inside the superconducting state. The fact that the quantum critical scattering of the unpaired electrons is much weaker than the average scattering of all electrons in the normal state reveals a k-space correlation between the strength of pairing and the strength of scattering, pointing to a common mechanism, presumably antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

Nodal to nodeless superconducting energy-gap structure change concomitant with fermi-surface reconstruction in the heavy-fermion compound CeCoIn(5)

The London penetration depth λ(T) was measured in single crystals of Ce_{1-x}R_{x}CoIn_{5}, R=La, Nd, and Yb down to T_{min}≈50  mK (T_{c}/T_{min}∼50) using a tunnel-diode resonator. In the cleanest samples Δλ(T) is best described by the power law Δλ(T)∝T^{n}, with n∼1, consistent with the existence of line nodes in the superconducting gap. Substitutions of Ce with La, Nd, and Yb lead to similar monotonic suppressions of T_{c}; however, the effects on Δλ(T) differ. While La and Nd substitution leads to an increase in the exponent n and saturation at n∼2, as expected for a dirty nodal superconductor, Yb substitution leads to n>3, suggesting a change from nodal to nodeless superconductivity. This superconducting gap structure change happens in the same doping range where changes of the Fermi-surface topology were reported, implying that the nodal structure and Fermi-surface topology are closely linked.

Landau renormalizations of superfluid density in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

The formation of heavy-fermion bands can occur by means of the conversion of a periodic array of local moments into itinerant electrons via the Kondo effect and the huge consequent Fermi-liquid renormalizations. Leggett predicted for liquid (3)He that Fermi-liquid renormalizations change in the superconducting state, leading to a temperature dependence of the London penetration depth Λ quite different from that in BCS theory. Using Leggett's theory, as modified for heavy fermions, it is possible to extract from the measured temperature dependence of Λ in high quality samples both Landau parameters F(0)(s) and F(1)(s); this has never been accomplished before. A modification of the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat C(el), related to that of Λ, is also expected. We have carefully determined the magnitude and temperature dependence of Λ in CeCoIn(5) by muon spin relaxation rate measurements to obtain F(0)(s) = 36 ± 1 and F(1)(s) = 1.2 ± 0.3, and we find a consistent change in the temperature dependence of C(el). This, the first determination of F(1)(s) with a value ≪ F(0)(s) in a heavy-fermion compound, tests the basic assumption of the theory of heavy fermions, that the frequency dependence of the self-energy is much more important than its momentum dependence.

Nodal quasiparticle dynamics in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn₅ revealed by precision microwave spectroscopy

CeCoIn₅ is a heavy fermion superconductor with strong similarities to the high-Tc cuprates, including quasi-two-dimensionality, proximity to antiferromagnetism and probable d-wave pairing arising from a non-Fermi-liquid normal state. Experiments allowing detailed comparisons of their electronic properties are of particular interest, but in most cases are difficult to realize, due to their very different transition temperatures. Here we use low-temperature microwave spectroscopy to study the charge dynamics of the CeCoIn₅ superconducting state. The similarities to cuprates, in particular to ultra-clean YBa₂Cu₃O(y), are striking: the frequency and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle conductivity are instantly recognizable, a consequence of rapid suppression of quasiparticle scattering below T(c); and penetration-depth data, when properly treated, reveal a clean, linear temperature dependence of the quasiparticle contribution to superfluid density. The measurements also expose key differences, including prominent multiband effects and a temperature-dependent renormalization of the quasiparticle mass.

Superconducting gap structure of the 115s revisited

Density functional theory calculations of the electronic structure of Ce- and Pu-based heavy fermion superconductors in the so-called 115 family are performed. The gap equation is used to consider which superconducting order parameters are most favorable assuming a pairing interaction that is peaked at (π, π, qz)—the wavevector for the antiferromagnetic ordering found in close proximity. In addition to the commonly accepted dx2−y2 order parameter, there is evidence that an extended s-wave order parameter with nodes is also plausible. We discuss whether these results are consistent with current observations and possible measurements that could help distinguish between these scenarios.

Electronic inhomogeneity in a Kondo lattice

Inhomogeneous electronic states resulting from entangled spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are hallmarks of strongly correlated electron materials; such behavior has been observed in many classes of d -electron materials, including the high-T c copper-oxide superconductors, manganites, and most recently the iron–pnictide superconductors. The complexity generated by competing phases in these materials constitutes a considerable theoretical challenge—one that still defies a complete description. Here, we report a manifestation of electronic inhomogeneity in a strongly correlated f -electron system, using CeCoIn5 as an example. A thermodynamic analysis of its superconductivity, combined with nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements, shows that nonmagnetic impurities (Y, La, Yb, Th, Hg, and Sn) locally suppress unconventional superconductivity, generating an inhomogeneous electronic “Swiss cheese” due to disrupted periodicity of the Kondo lattice. Our analysis may be generalized to include related systems, suggesting that electronic inhomogeneity should be considered broadly in Kondo lattice materials.

Orbital polarizations and superconducting phase diagrams in two-orbital asymmetric t-J models

We present the zero-temperature superconducting (SC) phase diagrams of the two-orbital asymmetric t-J model on a square lattice by means of the auxiliary-boson approach. Besides the two-gap SC and normal phases, we find an orbital dependent intermediate SC phase, in which one orbit is fully SC and another orbit is exponentially vanishing gapped SC. Such an intermediate phase is stable only for sufficient asymmetry in orbital space and doping concentration. The implication of the present scenario on the iron-based and other multi-orbital superconductors is discussed.

Andreev reflection and order parameter symmetry in heavy-fermion superconductors: the case of CeCoIn(5)

We review the current status of Andreev reflection spectroscopy on the heavy fermions, mostly focusing on the case of CeCoIn(5), a heavy-fermion superconductor with a critical temperature of 2.3 K. This is a well-established technique to investigate superconducting order parameters via measurements of the differential conductance from nanoscale metallic junctions. Andreev reflection is clearly observed in CeCoIn(5) as in other heavy-fermion superconductors. Considering the large mismatch in Fermi velocities, this observation seemingly appears to disagree with the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) theory. The measured Andreev signal is highly reduced to the order of maximum ∼13% compared to the theoretically predicted value (100%). The background conductance exhibits a systematic evolution in its asymmetry over a wide temperature range from above the heavy-fermion coherence temperature down to well below the superconducting transition temperature. Analysis of the conductance spectra using the extended BTK model provides a qualitative measure for the superconducting order parameter symmetry, which is determined to be the d(x(2)-y(2)) wave in CeCoIn(5). It is found that existing models do not quantitatively account for the data, which we attribute to the intrinsic properties of the heavy fermions. A substantial body of experimental data and extensive theoretical analysis point to the existence of two-fluid components in CeCoIn(5) and other heavy-fermion compounds. A phenomenological model is proposed employing a Fano interference effect between two conductance channels in order to explain both the conductance asymmetry and the reduced Andreev signal. This model appears plausible not only because it provides good fits to the data but also because it is highly likely that the electrical conduction occurs via two channels, one into the heavy-electron liquid and the other into the conduction electron continuum. Further experimental and theoretical investigations will shed new light on the mechanism of how the coherent heavy-electron liquid emerges out of the Kondo lattice, a prototypical strongly correlated electron system. Unresolved issues and future directions are also discussed.

Superfluid density in gapless superconductor CeCoIn(5)

Temperature dependence of the London penetration depth λ measured in single crystals of CeCoIn(5) is interpreted as being caused by a strong pair-breaking scattering that makes the superconductivity in this compound gapless. For a gapless d-wave superconductor, we derive λ = λ(0)(1-T(2)/T(c)(2))(-1/2) caused by the combined effect of magnetic and non-magnetic scattering, in excellent agreement with the data in the full temperature range and with the gapless s-wave case of Abrikosov and Gor'kov. We also obtain the slope of the upper critical field at T(c) that compares well with the measured slope.

Multiband order parameters for the PrOs4Sb12 and PrRu4Sb12 skutterudite superconductors from thermal conductivity measurements

Thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystal samples of the superconducting filled-skutterudite compounds PrOs4Sb12 and PrRu4Sb12 both as a function of temperature and transverse magnetic field. In a zero magnetic field, the low temperature electronic thermal conductivity of PrRu4Sb12 is consistent with a fully gapped Fermi surface. For PrOs4Sb12, residual electronic conduction in the zero-temperature limit is consistent with the presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap. The electronic thermal conductivity for both compounds shows a rapid rise at low magnetic fields. In PrRu4Sb12, this is interpreted in terms of multiband effects. In PrOs4Sb12, we consider the Doppler shift of nodal quasiparticles and multiband effects.

Field dependence of the ground state in the exotic superconductor CeCoIn5: a nuclear magnetic resonance investigation

We report 115In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in CeCoIn5 at low temperature (T approximately 70 mK) as a function of the magnetic field (H0) from 2 to 13.5 T applied perpendicular to the c axis. A NMR line shift reveals that below 10 T the spin susceptibility increases as sqrt[H0]. We associate this with an increase of the density of states due to the Zeeman and Doppler-shifted quasiparticles extended outside the vortex cores in a d-wave superconductor. Above 10 T a new superconducting state is stabilized, possibly the modulated phase predicted by Fulde, Ferrell, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov. This phase is clearly identified by a strong and linear increase of the NMR shift with the field, before a jump at the first order transition to the normal state.

Multigap superconductivity in the heavy-Fermion system CeCoIn5

New thermal conductivity experiments on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 down to 10 mK rule out the suggested existence of unpaired electrons. Moreover, they reveal strong multigap effects with a remarkably low "critical" field Hc2S for the small gap band, showing that the complexity of heavy-fermion band structure has a direct impact on their response under magnetic field.

Thermal conductivity evidence for a dx2-y2 pairing symmetry in the heavy-fermion CeIrIn5 superconductor

The phase diagram of the quasi-2D Ce(Ir,Rh)In5 system contains two distinct superconducting domes. By the thermal transport measurements in rotating magnetic fields H, we pinned down the superconducting gap structure of CeIrIn5 in the second dome, located distant from the first dome in proximity to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. Clear fourfold oscillation was observed when H is rotated within the ab plane, while no oscillation was observed within the bc plane. In sharp contrast to previous reports, our results are most consistent with dx2-y2 symmetry, implying that the superconductivity in the second phase is also mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations.

Andreev reflection in heavy-fermion superconductors and order parameter symmetry in CeCoIn5

Differential conductance spectra are obtained from nanoscale junctions on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 along three major crystallographic orientations. Consistency and reproducibility of characteristic features among the junctions ensure their spectroscopic nature. All junctions show a similar conductance asymmetry and Andreev reflectionlike conductance with a reduced signal ( approximately 10%-13%), both commonly observed in heavy-fermion superconductor junctions. Analysis using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model indicates that our data provide the first spectroscopic evidence for d_{x;{2}-y;{2}} symmetry. To quantify our conductance spectra, we propose a model by considering the general phenomenology in heavy fermions, the two-fluid behavior, and an energy-dependent density of states. Our model fits to the experimental data remarkably well and should invigorate further investigations.

Spin resonance in the d-wave superconductor CeCoIn5

Neutron scattering is used to probe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the d-wave heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 (T_(c)=2.3 K). Superconductivity develops from a state with slow (variant Planck's over 2piGamma=0.3+/-0.15 meV) commensurate [Q_(0)=(1/2,1/2,1/2)] antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and nearly isotropic spin correlations. The characteristic wave vector in CeCoIn5 is the same as CeIn3 but differs from the incommensurate wave vector measured in antiferromagnetically ordered CeRhIn5. A sharp spin resonance (variant Planck's over 2piGamma<0.07 meV) at variant Planck's over 2piomega=0.60+/-0.03 meV develops in the superconducting state removing spectral weight from low-energy transfers. The presence of a resonance peak is indicative of strong coupling between f-electron magnetism and superconductivity and consistent with a d-wave gap order parameter satisfying Delta(q+Q0)=-Delta(q).

Hybrid gap structure of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5

The thermal conductivity kappa of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5 was measured as a function of temperature down to T(c)/8, for current directions parallel (J parallel c) and perpendicular (J parallel a) to the tetragonal c axis. For J parallel a, a sizable residual linear term kappa(0)/T is observed, as previously, which confirms the presence of line nodes in the superconducting gap. For J parallel c, on the other hand, kappa/T-->0 as T-->0. The resulting precipitous decline in the anisotropy ratio kappa(c)/kappa(a) at low temperature rules out a gap structure with line nodes running along the c axis, such as the d-wave state favored for CeCoIn5, and instead points to a hybrid gap of E(g) symmetry.

Probing the quantum critical behavior of CeCoIn5 via Hall effect measurements

We present highly sensitive Hall effect measurements of the heavy fermion compound CeCoIn5 down to temperatures of 55 mK. A pronounced dip in the differential Hall coefficient | partial differential rho(xy)/ partial differential H| at low temperature and above the upper critical field of superconductivity, H(c2), is attributed to critical spin fluctuations associated with the departure from Landau Fermi liquid behavior. This identification is strongly supported by a systematic suppression of this feature at elevated pressures. The resulting crossover line in the field-temperature phase diagram favors a field induced quantum critical point at mu(0)H(qc) approximately 4.1 T below H(c2)(T=0) suggesting related, yet separate, critical fields.

Field dependent coherence length in the superclean, high-kappa superconductor CeCoIn5

Using small-angle neutron scattering, we have studied the flux-line lattice (FLL) in the superclean, high-kappa superconductor CeCoIn5. The FLL undergoes a first-order symmetry and reorientation transition at approximately 0.55 T at 50 mK. In addition, the FLL form factor in this material is found to be independent of the applied magnetic field, in striking contrast to the exponential decrease usually observed in superconductors. This result is consistent with a strongly field-dependent coherence length, proportional to the vortex separation.

Observation of spin susceptibility enhancement in the possible Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of CeCoIn(5)

We report (115)In nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn(5) in the vicinity of the superconducting critical field H(c2) for a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the ĉ axis. A possible inhomogeneous superconducting state, the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, is stabilized in this part of the phase diagram. In an 11 T applied magnetic field, we observe clear signatures of the two phase transitions: the higher temperature one to the homogeneous superconducting state and the lower temperature phase transition to a FFLO state. We find that the spin susceptibility in the putative FFLO state is significantly enhanced as compared to the value in a homogeneous superconducting state. The implications of this finding for the nature of the low temperature phase are discussed.

Nonvanishing energy scales at the quantum critical point of CeCoIn5

Heat and charge transport were used to probe the magnetic field-tuned quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn5. A comparison of electrical and thermal resistivities reveals three characteristic energy scales. A Fermi-liquid regime is observed below T(FL), with both transport coefficients diverging in parallel and T(FL) -->0 as H --> Hc, the critical field. The characteristic temperature of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, T(SF), is tuned to a minimum but finite value at Hc, which coincides with the end of the T-linear regime in the electrical resistivity. A third temperature scale, T(QP), signals the formation of quasiparticles, as fermions of charge e obeying the Wiedemann-Franz law. Unlike T(FL), it remains finite at Hc, so that the integrity of quasiparticles is preserved, even though the standard signature of Fermi-liquid theory fails.

Curie law, entropy excess, and superconductivity in heavy fermion metals and other strongly interacting fermi liquids

Low-temperature thermodynamic properties of strongly interacting Fermi liquids with a fermion condensate are investigated. We demonstrate that the spin susceptibility of these systems exhibits the Curie-Weiss law, and the entropy contains a temperature-independent term. The excessive entropy is released at the superconducting transition, enhancing the specific heat jump deltaC and rendering it proportional to the effective Curie constant. The theoretical results are favorably compared with the experimental data on the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn5, as well as 3He films.
