Electron, positron, and photon wakefield acceleration: trapping, wake overtaking, and ponderomotive acceleration

Dephasingless plasma wakefield photon acceleration

Sandberg and Thomas [Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 085001 (2023)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.130.085001] proposed a scheme to generate ultrashort, high-energy pulses of XUV photons though dephasingless photon acceleration in a beam-driven plasma wakefield. An ultrashort laser pulse is placed in the plasma wake behind a relativistic electron bunch such that it experiences a comoving negative density gradient and therefore shifts up in frequency. Using a tapered density profile provides phase-matching between driver and witness pulses. In this paper, we give the details of the wakefield solutions and phase-matching conditions used to generate the phase-matching density profile. The short, high-density, and weak driver limits are considered. We show, explicitly, the numerical algorithm used to calculate the density profiles.

Terahertz-driven positron acceleration assisted by ultra-intense lasers

Generation and acceleration of energetic positrons based on laser plasma have attracted intense attention due to their potential applications in medical physics, high energy physics, astrophysics and nuclear physics. However, such compact positron sources face a series of challenges including the beam dispersion, dephasing and unstability. Here, we propose a scheme that couples the all-optical generation of electron-positron pairs and rapid acceleration of copious positrons in the terahertz (THz) field. In the scheme, nanocoulomb-scale electrons are first captured in the wakefield and accelerated to 2.5 GeV. Then these energetic electrons emit strong THz radiation when they go through an aluminum foil. Subsequently, abundant γ photons and positrons are generated during the collision of GeV electron beam and the scattering laser. Due to the strong longitudinal acceleration field and the transvers confining field of the emitted THz wave, the positrons can be efficiently accelerated to 800 MeV, with the peak beam brilliance of 2.26 × 10¹²s^-1mm^-2mrad^-2eV^-1. This can arouse potential research interests from PW-class laser facilities together with a GeV electron beamline.

Effect of spin polarization on electron acceleration in magnetized quantum plasma by a surface plasma wave

The effect of spin-up and spin-down exchange interaction on electron acceleration by a surface plasma wave (SPW) propagating in magnetized quantum plasma has been studied. The SPW was excited over the metal-vacuum interface with maximum amplitude at the interface. The effective dielectric constant was evaluated, considering the effects of quantum Bohm potential, degenerate Fermi pressure, and electron spin. The externally applied magnetic field perturbed the densities of the oppositely spinning electrons, which resulted in spin polarization. The dispersion relation and energy exchange mechanism for the electron acceleration was built, incorporating the effects of spin polarization in the wave-plasma interaction. The energy gain was found to increase with the spin polarization.

Photon Acceleration from Optical to XUV

The propagating density gradients of a plasma wakefield may frequency upshift a trailing witness laser pulse, a process known as "photon acceleration." In uniform plasma, the witness laser will eventually dephase because of group delay. We find phase-matching conditions for the pulse using a tailored density profile. An analytic solution for a 1D nonlinear plasma wake with an electron beam driver indicates that, even though the plasma density decreases, the frequency shift reaches no asymptotic limit, i.e., is unlimited provided the wake can be sustained. In fully self-consistent 1D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, more than 40 times frequency shifts were demonstrated. In quasi-3D PIC simulations, frequency shifts up to 10 times were observed, limited only by simulation resolution and nonoptimized driver evolution. The pulse energy increases in this process, by a factor of 5, and the pulse is guided and temporally compressed by group velocity dispersion, resulting in the resulting extreme ultraviolet laser pulse having near-relativistic (a_{0}∼0.4) intensity.

Wave breaking field of relativistically intense electrostatic waves in electronegative plasma with super-thermal electrons

The wave breaking limit of relativistically intense electrostatic waves in an unmagnetised electronegative plasma, where electrons are alleged to attach onto neutral atoms or molecules and thus forming a significant amount of negative ions, has been studied analytically. A nonlinear theory has been developed, using one-dimensional (1D) relativistic multi-fluid model in order to study the roles of super-thermal electrons, negative ion species and the Lorentz factor, on the dynamics of the wave. A generalised kappa-type distribution function has been chosen for the velocities of the electrons, to couple the densities of the fluids. By assuming the travelling wave solution, the equation of motion for the evolution of the wave in a stationary wave frame has been derived and numerical solutions have been presented. Studies have been further extended, using standard Sagdeev pseudopotential method, to discover the maximum electric field amplitude sustained by these waves. The dependence of wave breaking limit on the different input parameters such as the Lorentz factor, electron temperature, spectral index of the electron velocity distribution and on the fraction and the mass ratio of the negative to positive ion species has been shown explicitly. The wavelength of these waves has been calculated for a wide range of input parameters and its dependence on aforementioned plasma parameters have been studied in detail. These results are relevant to understand particle acceleration and relativistic wave breaking phenomena in high intensity laser plasma experiments and space environments where the secondary ion species and super-thermal electrons exist.

Dense Helical Electron Bunch Generation in Near-Critical Density Plasmas with Ultrarelativistic Laser Intensities

The mechanism for emergence of helical electron bunch(HEB) from an ultrarelativistic circularly polarized laser pulse propagating in near-critical density(NCD) plasma is investigated. Self-consistent three-dimensional(3D) Particle-in-Cell(PIC) simulations are performed to model all aspects of the laser plasma interaction including laser pulse evolution, electron and ion motions. At a laser intensity of 10²² W/cm², the accelerated electrons have a broadband spectrum ranging from 300 MeV to 1.3 GeV, with the charge of 22 nano-Coulombs(nC) within a solid-angle of 0.14 Sr. Based on the simulation results, a phase-space dynamics model is developed to explain the helical density structure and the broadband energy spectrum.

Electron self-injection in multidimensional relativistic-plasma wake fields

We present an analytical model for electron self-injection in a nonlinear, multidimensional plasma wave excited by a short laser pulse in the bubble regime or by a short electron beam in the blowout regime. In these regimes, which are typical for electron acceleration, the laser radiation pressure or the electron beam charge pushes out background plasma electrons forming a plasma cavity--bubble--with a huge ion charge. The plasma electrons can be trapped in the bubble and accelerated by the plasma wakefields up to very high energies. The model predicts the condition for electron trapping and the trapping cross section in terms of the bubble radius and the bubble velocity. The obtained results are in a good agreement with results of 3D particle-in-cell simulations.

Ponderomotive acceleration of hot electrons in tenuous plasmas

The oscillation-center Hamiltonian is derived for a relativistic electron injected with an arbitrary momentum in a linearly polarized laser pulse propagating in tenuous plasma, assuming that the pulse length is smaller than the plasma wavelength. For hot electrons generated by collisions with ions under an intense laser drive, multiple regimes of ponderomotive acceleration are identified, and the laser dispersion is shown to affect the process at plasma densities down to 10(17) cm-3. We consider the regime when the cold plasma is not accelerated, requiring a/gammag<<1, where a is the laser parameter, proportional to the field amplitude, and gammag is the group-velocity Lorentz factor. In this case, the Lorentz factor gamma of hot electrons does not exceed Gamma [triple bond] alpha gammag after acceleration, assuming its initial value also satisfies gamma0 <or=Gamma. Yet gamma approximately Gamma is attained within a wide range of initial conditions; hence, a cutoff in the hot-electron distribution is predicted.

Interaction of electromagnetic waves with caustics in plasma flows

An electromagnetic wave (EMW) interacting with the moving singularity of the charged particle flux undergoes the reflection and absorption as well as frequency change due to Doppler effect and nonlinearity. The singularity corresponding to a caustic in plasma flow with inhomogeneous velocity can arise during the breaking of the finite amplitude Langmuir waves due to nonlinear effects. A systematic analysis of the wave-breaking regimes and caustics formation is presented and the EMW reflection coefficients are calculated.
