Pattern stabilization through parameter alternation in a nonlinear optical system

A complex pattern with hexagonal lattice and white-eye stripe in dielectric barrier discharge

A novel type of white-eye pattern in a dielectric barrier discharge system has been investigated in this paper. It is a superposition of a hexagonal lattice and a white-eye stripe in appearance and evolves from a white-eye square grid state with the applied voltage increasing. Its spatio-temporal dynamics obtained by an intensified charge-coupled device shows that it consists of three transient rectangular sublattices. The spatiotemporally resolved evolutions of the molecular vibrational temperature and electron density of the pattern are measured by optical emission spectra. The evolution of surface charge distribution is given and its effect on the self-organized pattern formation is discussed.

Pattern formation based on the triple-layer coupling mechanism

We report on the first investigation of the triple-layer coupling pattern formation in a dielectric barrier discharge system. The pattern basically consists of one discharge subpattern ignited in the gas gap and two surface-charge subpatterns deposited on the dielectric surfaces. The coupling of the three subpatterns (layers) is presented by analyzing the time-resolved discharge sequence of a white-eye hexagonal super lattice pattern (WEHSP). A triple-layer coupling reaction-diffusion regime is also established to conduct simulations and the simulated WEHSP agrees well with the experiment. This paper will provide a deeper understanding for the layer coupling mechanism in pattern formation.

Refined fiber laser model

With modification, a recently proposed laser array model is found to agree quantitatively with fiber laser experiments. Comparisons of transient behavior, stable dynamical states, and transitions are made using both previously published and new experiments. While the original model agrees well for fibers with relatively low losses, achieving quantitative agreement over a wide range of operating conditions requires more physically appropriate descriptions of gain dynamics. The refined model is derived, and its predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with experiments.
