Superfluid transition in a rotating fermi gas with resonant interactions

Quantum Hall transition near a fermion Feshbach resonance in a rotating trap

We consider two-species of fermions in a rotating trap that interact via an s-wave Feshbach resonance, at total Landau level filling factor two (or one for each species). We show that the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a fermion integer quantum Hall state to a boson fractional quantum Hall state as the pairing interaction strength increases, with the transition occurring near the resonance. The effective field theory for the transition is shown to be that of a (emergent) massless relativistic bosonic field coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field, with the coupling giving rise to semionic statistics to the emergent particles.

Density waves and supersolidity in rapidly rotating atomic Fermi gases

We study theoretically the low-temperature phases of a two-component atomic Fermi gas with attractive s-wave interactions under conditions of rapid rotation. We find that, in the extreme quantum limit, when all particles occupy the lowest Landau level, the normal state is unstable to the formation of charge density wave (CDW) order. At lower rotation rates, when many Landau levels are occupied, we show that the low-temperature phases can be supersolids, involving both CDW and superconducting order.

Superfluid expansion of a rotating Fermi gas

We study the expansion of a rotating, superfluid Fermi gas. The presence and absence of vortices in the rotating gas are used to distinguish the superfluid and normal parts of the expanding cloud. We find that the superfluid pairs survive during the expansion until the density decreases below a critical value. Our observation of superfluid flow in the expanding gas at 1/kFa=0 extends the range where fermionic superfluidity has been studied to densities of 1.2x10(11) cm(-3), about an order of magnitude lower than any previous study.
