Wigner crystallization in (DI-DCNQI)2Ag detected by synchrotron radiation X-Ray diffraction

Successive Dimensional Transition in (TMTTF)_{2}PF_{6} Revealed by Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction

A quasi-one-dimensional organic charge-transfer salt (TMTTF)_{2}PF_{6} undergoes a multistep phase transition as the temperature decreases. One of these transitions is called a "structureless transition," and these detailed structures were unknown for many years. With synchrotron x-ray diffraction, we observed a slight structural difference owing to the effect of charge-order transition between two TMTTF molecules in a dimer, which corresponds to the charge transfer δ_{CO}=0.20e. The two-dimensional Wigner crystallization was determined from an electron density analysis using core differential Fourier synthesis. Furthermore, we found that the ground state due to tetramerization, called the spin Peierls phase, is a three-dimensional transition with interchain correlation.

Co-crystallization of theZandEisomers of Me₂I₂TTF in a mixed-valence bromide salt leads to segregated stacks with two different charge order patterns and associated charge-assisted halogen bonding.

Charge-ordering transition in (TMTTF)2X explored via dilatometry

Charge-ordering phenomena have been highly topical over the past few years. A phase transition towards a charge-ordered state has been observed experimentally in several classes of materials. Among them, many studies have been devoted to the family of quasi-one-dimensional organic charge-transfer salts (TMTTF)2X, where (TMTTF) stands for tetramethyltetrathiafulvalene and X for a monovalent anion (X = PF6, AsF6 and SbF6). However, the relationship between the electron localization phenomena and the role of the lattice distortion in stabilizing the charge-ordering pattern is poorly documented in the literature. Here we present a brief overview of selected literature results, with emphasis placed on recent thermal expansion experiments probing the charge-ordering transition of these salts.

Phase diagram of quarter-filled band organic salts [EDT-TTF-CONMe2]2X, X=AsF6 and Br

An investigation of the P-T phase diagram of the quarter-filled organic conductors, [EDT-TTF-CONMe2]2X is reported on the basis of transport and NMR studies of two members, X=AsF6 and Br of the family. The strongly insulating character of these materials in the low-pressure regime has been attributed to a remarkably stable charge-ordered state confirmed by 13C NMR and the only existence of 1/4 Umklapp e-e scattering favoring a charge ordering instead of the 1D Mott localization seen in (TMTTF)2X and (TMTSF)2X which are 1/4-filled compounds with dimerization. A nonmagnetic insulating phase instead of the spin density wave state is stabilized in the deconfined regime of the phase diagram. This sequence of phases observed under pressure may be considered as a generic behavior for 1/4-filled conductors with correlations.

Spiral charge frustration in the molecular conductor (DI-DCNQI)2Ag

We theoretically study the effect of spiral-type charge frustration in a quasi-one-dimensional molecular conductor (DI-DCNQI)2Ag. We clarify how the spiral frustration in the interchain Coulomb repulsion is relieved and leads to a self-organization of complex charge-lattice ordered chains, in agreement with the recent synchrotron x-ray study [T. Kakiuchi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 066402 (2007)10.1103/PhysRevLett.98.066402]. In addition, we find that a keen competition between charge and lattice degrees of freedom under the frustration gives rise to a characteristic temperature within the ordered phase, below which a drastic growth of molecular displacements occurs. Our results enlighten the relevance of the spiral frustration and provide a possible reconciliation among puzzling experimental data.

Spin ordering and enhancement of electronic heat capacity in an organic system of (DI-DCNQI)(2)(Ag(1-x)Cu(x))

Thermodynamic measurements on the organic system of (DI-DCNQI)(2)(Ag(1-x)Cu(x)) (x = 0,0.05, 0.71, 0.90) were performed to study the change from the charge-ordered (CO) insulating state to the π-d hybridized metallic state. A thermal anomaly associated with the antiferromagnetic transition that occurred in the charge-ordered lattice was observed at 6.2 K from the temperature dependence of the heat capacity of (DI-DCNQI)(2)Ag. We have found that the magnetic entropy around the peak is only 1.5% of Rln2, corresponding to the full entropy expected for the formula unit of (DI-DCNQI)(2)Ag. This anomaly is suppressed down to about 3 K in the x = 0.05 sample owing to the disorders induced in the CO lattice. In the metallic concentration of x = 0.90, the low-temperature electronic heat capacity coefficient, γ was found to be enhanced by up to about 63.6 mJ K(-2) mol(-1) probably owing to the cooperative effect of π-d hybridization and intersite Coulomb interaction (V).

Evidence for lattice effects at the charge-ordering transition in (TMTTF)2X

High-resolution thermal expansion measurements have been performed for exploring the mysterious "structureless transition" in (TMTTF)2X (X=PF(6) and AsF6), where charge ordering at T(CO) coincides with the onset of ferroelectric order. Particularly distinct lattice effects are found at T(CO) in the uniaxial expansivity along the interstack c direction. We propose a scheme involving a charge modulation along the TMTTF stacks and its coupling to displacements of the counteranions X-. These anion shifts, which lift the inversion symmetry enabling ferroelectric order to develop, determine the 3D charge pattern without ambiguity. Evidence is found for another anomaly for both materials at T(int) approximately 0.6T(CO) indicative of a phase transition related to the charge ordering.

Antiferromagnetic d-electron exchange via a spin-singlet pi-electron ground state in an organic conductor

Electron spin resonance reveals the spin behavior of conduction (pi) and localized (d) electrons in beta-(BDA-TTP)2MCl4 (M=Fe, Ga). Both the Ga3+(S=0) and Fe3+(S=5/2) compounds exhibit a metal-insulator transition at 113 K with the simultaneous formation of a spin-singlet ground state in the pi electron system of the donor molecules. The behavior is consistent with charge ordering in beta-(BDA-TTP)2MCl4 at the metal-insulator transition. At 5 K, the Fe3+ compound orders antiferromagnetically, even though the pi electrons, which normally would facilitate magnetic exchange, are localized nonmagnetic singlets.
