Phenomenological theory of the underdoped phase of a high-Tc superconductor

Coupling two order parameters in a quantum gas

Controlling matter to simultaneously support coupled properties is of fundamental and technological importance¹ (for example, in multiferroics^2-5 or high-temperature superconductors^6-9). However, determining the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the simultaneous presence of different orders is difficult, making it hard to predict material phenomenology^10,11 or modify properties^12-16. Here, using a quantum gas to engineer an adjustable interaction at the microscopic level, we demonstrate scenarios of competition, coexistence and mutual enhancement of two orders. For the enhancement scenario, the presence of one order lowers the critical point of the other. Our system is realized by a Bose-Einstein condensate that can undergo self-organization phase transitions in two optical resonators¹⁷, resulting in two distinct crystalline density orders. We characterize the coupling between these orders by measuring the composite order parameter and the elementary excitations and explain our results with a mean-field free-energy model derived from a microscopic Hamiltonian. Our system is ideally suited to explore quantum tricritical points¹⁸ and can be extended to study the interplay of spin and density orders¹⁹ as a function of temperature²⁰.

Robust nodal d-wave spectrum in simulations of a strongly fluctuating competing order in underdoped cuprate superconductors

We resolve an existing discrepancy between convincing evidence for competing order in underdoped cuprates and spectroscopic data consistent with a homogeneous d-wave superconductor in the very same compounds. Specifically, we show that fluctuations of the competing order generate strongly inhomogeneous states whose spectra are almost indistinguishable from the pure d-wave superconductor. This is in contrast to the commonly studied case of homogeneously coexisting order, which typically generates a reconstructed Fermi surface with closed Fermi pockets. The signatures of the fluctuating competing order can be found mainly in a splitting of the antinodal band, and, for strong magnetic order, in small induced nodal gaps similar to those found in recent experiments on underdoped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4.

A phenomenological theory of the anomalous pseudogap phase in underdoped cuprates

The theoretical description of the anomalous properties of the pseudogap phase in the underdoped region of the cuprate phase diagram lags behind the progress in spectroscopic and other experiments. A phenomenological ansatz, based on analogies to the approach to Mott localization at weak coupling in lower dimensional systems, has been proposed by Yang et al (2006 Phys. Rev. B 73 174501). This ansatz has had success in describing a range of experiments. The motivation underlying this ansatz is described and the comparisons with experiment are reviewed. Implications for a more microscopic theory are discussed together with the relation to theories that start directly from microscopic strongly coupled Hamiltonians.

Emergence of preformed Cooper pairs from the doped Mott insulating state in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

Superconductors are characterized by an energy gap that represents the energy needed to break the pairs of electrons (Cooper pairs) apart. At temperatures considerably above those associated with superconductivity, the high-transition-temperature copper oxides have an additional 'pseudogap'. It has been unclear whether this represents preformed pairs of electrons that have not achieved the coherence necessary for superconductivity, or whether it reflects some alternative ground state that competes with superconductivity. Paired electrons should display particle-hole symmetry with respect to the Fermi level (the energy of the highest occupied level in the electronic system), but competing states need not show such symmetry. Here we report a photoemission study of the underdoped copper oxide Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) that shows the opening of a symmetric gap only in the anti-nodal region, contrary to the expectation that pairing would take place in the nodal region. It is therefore evident that the pseudogap does reflect the formation of preformed pairs of electrons and that the pairing occurs only in well-defined directions of the underlying lattice.

Two-dimensional superconducting fluctuations in stripe-ordered La1.875Ba0.125CuO4

Recent spectroscopic observations of a d-wave-like gap in stripe-ordered La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 have led us to critically analyze the anisotropic transport and magnetization properties of this material. The data suggest that concomitant with the spin ordering is an electronic decoupling of the CuO(2) planes. We observe a transition (or crossover) to a state of two-dimensional (2D) fluctuating superconductivity, which eventually reaches a 2D superconducting state below a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Thus, it appears that the stripe order in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) frustrates three-dimensional superconducting phase order, but is fully compatible with 2D superconductivity and an enhanced T(c).
