Temperature dependence of the angle resolved photoemission spectra in the undoped cuprates: self-consistent approach to the t-J Holstein model

Self-trapped excitons in soft semiconductors

Self-trapped excitons (STEs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their intriguing properties and potential optoelectronic applications. STEs are formed from the lattice distortion induced by the strong electron (exciton)-phonon coupling in soft semiconductors upon photoexcitation, which features in broadband photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra with a large Stokes shift. Recently, significant progress has been achieved in this field but many remain challenges that need to be solved, including the understanding of the underlying physical mechanism, tuning of the performance, and device applications. Along these lines, for the first time, systematic experimental characterizations and advanced theoretical calculations are presented in this review to shed light on the physical mechanism. The possibility of tuning the STEs through multiple degrees of freedom is also presented, along with an overview of the STE-based emerged applications and future research perspectives.

Fermi blockade of the strong electron-phonon interaction in modelled optimally doped high temperature superconductors

We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo method. We show that the strong electron-phonon interaction, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong electron-phonon interaction fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high temperature superconductors.

Witnessing the formation and relaxation of dressed quasi-particles in a strongly correlated electron system

The non-equilibrium approach to correlated electron systems is often based on the paradigm that different degrees of freedom interact on different timescales. In this context, photo-excitation is treated as an impulsive injection of electronic energy that is transferred to other degrees of freedom only at later times. Here, by studying the ultrafast dynamics of quasi-particles in an archetypal strongly correlated charge-transfer insulator (La2CuO(4+δ)), we show that the interaction between electrons and bosons manifests itself directly in the photo-excitation processes of a correlated material. With the aid of a general theoretical framework (Hubbard-Holstein Hamiltonian), we reveal that sub-gap excitation pilots the formation of itinerant quasi-particles, which are suddenly dressed by an ultrafast reaction of the bosonic field.

Suppression of superconductivity in the Hubbard model by buckling and breathing phonons

We study the effect of buckling and breathing phonons, relevant for cuprate superconductors, on the d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model by employing dynamical cluster Monte Carlo calculations. The interplay of electronic correlations and the electron-phonon interaction produces two competing effects: an enhancement of the effective d-wave pairing interaction, which favors d-wave superconductivity, and a strong renormalization of the single-particle propagator, which suppresses superconductivity. In the region of the parameter space relevant for cuprate superconductors, we find that the buckling and the breathing phonons suppress the superconductivity.

High-spin polaron in lightly doped CuO2 planes

We derive and investigate numerically a minimal yet detailed spin-polaron model that describes lightly doped CuO2 layers. The low-energy physics of a hole is studied by total-spin-resolved exact diagonalization on clusters of up to 32 CuO2 unit cells, revealing features missed by previous studies. In particular, spin-polaron states with total spin 3/2 are the lowest eigenstates in some regions of the Brillouin zone. In these regions, and also at other points, the quasiparticle weight is identically zero indicating orthogonal states to those represented in the one electron Green's function. This highlights the importance of the proper treatment of spin fluctuations in the many-body background.

Ising t-J model close to half filling: a Monte Carlo study

Within the recently proposed doped-carrier representation of the projected lattice electron operators we derive a full Ising version of the t-J model. This model possesses the global discrete Z(2) symmetry as a maximal spin symmetry of the Hamiltonian at any values of the coupling constants, t and J. In contrast, in the spin anisotropic limit of the t-J model, usually referred to as the t-J(z) model, the global SU(2) invariance is fully restored at J(z) = 0, so that only the spin-spin interaction has in this model the true Ising form. We discuss a relationship between these two models and the standard isotropic t-J model. We show that the low-energy quasiparticles in all three models share qualitatively similar properties at low doping and small values of J/t. The main advantage of the proposed Ising t-J model over the t-J(z) one is that the former allows for the unbiased Monte Carlo calculations on large clusters of up to 10(3) sites. Within this model we discuss in detail the destruction of the antiferromagnetic (AF) order by doping as well as the interplay between the AF order and hole mobility. We also discuss the effect of the exchange interaction and that of the next-nearest-neighbour hoppings on the destruction of the AF order at finite doping. We show that the short-range AF order is observed in a wide range of temperatures and dopings, much beyond the boundaries of the AF phase. We explicitly demonstrate that the local no-double-occupancy constraint plays the dominant role in destroying the magnetic order at finite doping. Finally, a role of inhomogeneities is discussed.

Charge dynamics of doped holes in high Tc cuprate superconductors: a clue from optical conductivity

The charge dynamics in weakly hole doped high temperature superconductors is studied in terms of the accurate numerical solution to a model of a single hole interacting with a quantum lattice in an antiferromagnetic background, and accurate far-infrared ellipsometry measurements. The experimentally observed two electronic bands in the infrared spectrum can be identified in terms of the interplay between the electron correlation and electron-phonon interaction resolving the long standing mystery of the midinfrared band.
