Impairment of Photorespiratory Carbon Flow into Rubber by the Inhibition of the Glycolate Pathway in Guayule (Parthenium argentatum Gray)

Honoring eight senior distinguished plant biologists from India

We summarize here research contributions of eight stalwarts in photosynthesis research from India. These distinguished scientists (Shree Kumar Apte, Basanti Biswal, Udaya C. Biswal, Agepati S. Raghavendra, Attipalli Ramachandra Reddy, Prafullachandra Vishnu (Raj) Sane, Baishnab Charan Tripathy, and Dinesh C. Uprety) were honored on November 2, 2017, at the School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad. We include here two group photographs of this special event, which was organized by the Department of Plant Sciences, during the 8th International Conference on Photosynthesis and Hydrogen Energy Research for Sustainability-2017 ( https://prs.science/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Photosynthesis-Research-for-Sustainability-2017.pdf , also available at: http://www.life.illinois.edu/govindjee/world-historical.html ). The main conference had honored three international scientists: William Cramer (Purdue University. Vallabhaneni Sita Rama Das, 1933-2010: teacher and mentor

We present here the life and research of V. S. Rama Das, a distinguished Indian botanist who specialized in photosynthesis. He was the first to purify chloroplasts that were free of mitochondrial contamination. He then studied C4, C3-C4 intermediate and CAM pathways, as well as their taxonomic distribution in tropical climates. His most valuable legacy is that he, as a philosopher, inspired and guided many students to pursue their research career in India. Integrated operation of the photorespiratory cycle and cytosolic metabolism in the modulation of primary nitrogen assimilation and export of organic N-transport compounds from leaves: a hypothesis

Photorespiration is generally considered to be an essentially dissipative process, although it performs some protective and essential functions. A theoretical appraisal indicates that the loss of freshly assimilated CO2 due to photorespiration in well-watered plants may not be as high as generally believed. Even under moderately adverse conditions, these losses may not exceed 10%. The photorespiratory metabolism of the source leaves of well-watered and well-nourished crop plants ought to be different from that of other leaves because the fluxes of the export of both carbohydrates and organic N-transport compounds in source leaves is quite high. With a heuristic approach that involved the dovetailing of certain metabolic steps with the photorespiratory cycle (PR-cycle), a novel network is proposed to operate in the source-leaves of well-watered and well-nourished plants. This network allows for the diversion of metabolites from their cyclic-routes in sizeable quantities. With the removal of considerable quantities of glycine and serine from the cyclic route, the number of RuBP oxygenation events would be several times those of the formation of hydroxypyruvate. Thus, to an extreme extent, photorespiratory metabolism would become open-ended and involve much less futile recycling of glycine and serine. Conversion of glyoxylate to glycine has been proposed to be a crucial step in the determination of the relative rates of the futile (cyclic) and anabolic (open-ended) routes. Thus, in the source leaves of well-watered and well-nourished plants, the importance of the cyclic route is limited to the salvaging of photorespiratory intermediates for the regeneration of RuBP. The proposed network is resilient enough to coordinate the rates of the assimilation of carbon and nitrogen in accordance with the moisture and N-fertility statuses of the soil.

Photosynthesis research in India: transition from yield physiology into molecular biology

Photosynthesis research in India can be traced back several thousand years, with the mention of the Sun energizing the plants, which form food for all living creatures on the earth (from the Mahabharata, the great epic, ca. 2600 B.C.) and the report of Sage Parasara (ca. 100 B.C.) on the ability of plants to make their own food, due to their pigments. With the pioneering studies by Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, work on photosynthesis proceeded steadily during the first half of the 20th century. Some of the classic reports during this period are: malate metabolism in Hydrilla, spectrophotometric estimation of chlorophylls, importance of spectral quality for photosynthesis - an indication of two photosystems, photoinactivation of photosynthesis, and importance of flag leaf photosynthesis to grain yield. After the 1960s, there was a burst of research in the areas of physiology and biochemistry of carbon assimilation and photochemistry. A significant transition occurred, before the beginning of new millennium, into the area of molecular biology of chloroplasts, regulation of photosynthesis and stress tolerance. Future research work in India is geared to focus on the following aspects of photosynthesis: elucidation/analysis of genes, molecular biology/evolution of enzymes, development/use of transgenics and modeling.
