Modelling Dislocation-Induced Anisotropic Line Broadening in Rietveld Refinements Using a Voigt Function. II. Application to Neutron Powder Diffraction Data

Structural and Electrical Properties of Novel Cr/Fe Mixed Transition-Metal Phosphates

The phosphate KCoCr(PO₄)₂ and iron-substituted variants KCoCr_1-xFe_x(PO₄)₂ (x = 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75) were synthesized by a solid-state reaction route, while a high substitution level of Fe was achieved. Their structures were refined using powder X-ray diffraction and indexed in a monoclinic system with a P2₁/n space group. A 3D framework with six-sided tunnels parallel to the [101] direction was formed in which the K atoms are located. Mössbauer spectroscopy confirms the exclusive presence of octahedral paramagnetic Fe³⁺ ions, with isomer shifts increasing slightly with x substitution. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the presence of paramagnetic Cr³⁺ ions. The activation energy, determined by dielectric measurements, shows that the iron-containing samples present higher ionic activity. Relative to the electrochemical activity of K, these materials could be good candidates for positive and/or negative electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Quantitative powder diffraction using a (2 + 3) surface diffractometer and an area detector

Conversion of 2D detector images measured on a (2 + 3) surface diffractometer to meaningful intensities that can be used for quantitative analysis of powdered and textured materials is discussed.

X-ray diffractometers primarily designed for surface X-ray diffraction are often used to measure the diffraction from powders, textured materials and fiber-texture samples in 2θ scans. Unlike in high-energy powder diffraction, only a fraction of the powder rings is typically measured, and the data consist of many detector images across the 2θ range. Such diffractometers typically scan in directions not possible on a conventional laboratory diffractometer, which gives enhanced control of the scattering vector relative to the sample orientation. There are, however, very few examples where the measured intensity is directly used, such as for profile/Rietveld refinement, as is common with other powder diffraction data. Although the underlying physics is known, converting the data is time consuming and the appropriate corrections are dispersed across several publications, often not with powder diffraction in mind. This paper presents the angle calculations and correction factors required to calculate meaningful intensities for 2θ scans with a (2 + 3)-type diffractometer and an area detector. Some of the limitations with respect to texture, refraction and instrumental resolution are also discussed, as is the kind of information that one can hope to obtain.

Substitutional limit of gadolinium in β-tricalcium phosphate and its magnetic resonance imaging characteristics

To compensate the limitations of bone tissue magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a series of gadolinium (Gd³⁺ ) substituted β-Tricalcium phosphate [β-TCP, β-Ca₃ (PO₄ )₂ ] were developed. All the powders were characterized using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, Rietveld refinement of the XRD data and the studies confirmed the Gd³⁺ occupancy at Ca²⁺ (1), Ca²⁺ (2) and Ca²⁺ (3) lattice sites of β-Ca₃ (PO₄ )_2. HR-TEM analysis revealed the spherical nature of particles with diameter about 100 nm. The Gd³⁺ doped β-Ca₃ (PO₄ )₂ exhibited non-toxic behaviour to MG-63 cells in vitro and the room temperature magnetic field versus magnetization measurements confirmed its paramagnetic behaviour. MRI analysis revelas that it shorten both T₁ and T₂ proton relaxation times, thus influencing both r₁ and r₂ relaxivity values that reach 61.97 mM^-1 s^-1 and 73.35 mM^-1 s^-1 . © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Solving crystal structures of metal and chemical hydrides

The methods of structural characterization of metal and chemical hydrides are reviewed. The existing difficulties and problems are outlined and possible solutions presented. It is shown that powder diffraction, and especially the Direct Space Method, is essential component of hydride research. Crystal structures containing as many as 55 independent atoms (including hydrogen) have been fully characterized using powder diffraction. This is of great importance, because rapid collection of powder data thanks to modern synchrotron and neutron time-of-flight sources opens the possibility for fast in-situ studies, mapping of phase transitions induced by the temperature, pressure, hydrogen content, and chemical reactions. The progress in structural characterization of hydrides goes hand in hand with the progress in the powder diffraction methodology.
