A mixed-valence manganese(III)-manganese(IV) di-mu-oxo complex, [(cyclam)MnO]2(ClO4)2(NO3)

What controls the magnetic exchange interaction in mixed- and homo-valent Mn7 disc-like clusters? A theoretical perspective

Density functional theory (DFT) studies have been undertaken to compute the magnetic exchange and to probe the origin of the magnetic interactions in two hetero- and two homo-valent heptanuclear manganese disc-like clusters, of formula [Mn(II) 4 Mn(IV) 3 (tea)(teaH2 )3 (peolH)4 ] (1), [Mn(II) 4 Mn(III) 3 F3 (tea)(teaH)(teaH2 )2 (piv)4 (Hpiv)(chp)3 ] (2), [Mn(II) 7 (pppd)6 (tea)(OH)3 ] (3) and [Mn(II) 7 (paa)6 (OMe)6 ] (4) (teaH3 =triethanolamine, peolH4 =pentaerythritol, Hpiv=pivalic acid, Hchp=6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridine, pppd=1-phenyl-3-(2-pyridyl) propane-1,3-dione; paaH=N-(2-pyridinyl)acetoacetamide). DFT calculations yield J values, which reproduce the magnetic susceptibility data very well for all four complexes; these studies are also highlighting the likely ageing/stability problems in two of the complexes. It is found that the spin ground states, S, for complexes 1-4 are drastically different, varying from S=29/2 to S=1/2. These values are found to be controlled by the nature of the oxidation state of the metal ions and minor differences present in the structures. Extensive magneto-structural correlations are developed for the seven building unit dimers present in the complexes, with the correlations unlocking the reasons behind the differences in the magnetic properties observed. Independent of the oxidation state of the metal ions, the Mn-O-Mn/Mn-F-Mn angles are found to be the key parameters, which significantly influence the sign as well as the magnitude of the J values. The magneto-structural correlations developed here, have broad applicability and can be utilised to understand the magnetic properties of other Mn clusters.

Reaction landscape of a pentadentate N5-ligated Mn(II) complex with O2˙- and H2O2 includes conversion of a peroxomanganese(III) adduct to a bis(μ-oxo)dimanganese(III,IV) species

Herein we describe the chemical reactivity of the mononuclear [Mn(II)(N4py)(OTf)](OTf) (1) complex with hydrogen peroxide and superoxide. Treatment of 1 with one equivalent superoxide at -40 °C in MeCN formed the peroxomanganese(III) adduct, [Mn(III)(O2)(N4py)](+) (2) in ~30% yield. Complex 2 decayed over time and the formation of the bis(μ-oxo)dimanganese(III,IV) complex, [Mn(III)Mn(IV)(μ-O)2(N4py)2](3+) (3) was observed. When 2 was formed in higher yields (~60%) using excess superoxide, the [Mn(III)(O2)(N4py)](+) species thermally decayed to Mn(II) species and 3 was formed in no greater than 10% yield. Treatment of [Mn(III)(O2)(N4py)](+) with 1 resulted in the formation of 3 in ~90% yield, relative to the concentration of [Mn(III)(O2)(N4py)](+). This reaction mimics the observed chemistry of Mn-ribonucleotide reductase, as it features the conversion of two Mn(II) species to an oxo-bridged Mn(III)Mn(IV) compound using O2(-) as oxidant. Complex 3 was independently prepared through treatment of 1 with H2O2 and base at -40 °C. The geometric and electronic structures of 3 were probed using electronic absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), variable-temperature, variable-field MCD (VTVH-MCD), and X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopies. Complex 3 was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), which revealed the N4py ligand bound in an unusual tetradentate fashion.

Di-μ-oxido-bis-[(1,4,8,11-tetra-aza-cyclo-tetra-decane-κN,N',N'',N''')dimangan-ese(III,IV)] bis-(tetra-phenyl-borate) chloride acetonitrile disolvate

The title compound, [Mn(2)O(2)(C(10)H(24)N(4))(2)](C(24)H(20)B)(2)Cl·2CH(3)CN, is a mixed-valent Mn(III)/Mn(IV) oxide-bridged mangan-ese dimer with one chloride and two tetra-phenyl-borate counter-anions. There are two non-coordinated mol-ecules of acetonitrile in the formula unit. A center of inversion is present between the two metal atoms, and, consequently, there is no distinction between Mn(III) and Mn(IV) metal centers. In the Mn(2)O(2) core, the Mn-O distances are 1.817 (3) and 1.821 (3) Å. The cyclam ligand is in the cis configuration. The chloride counter-anion resides on a center of symmetry, whereas the tetra-phenyl-borate counter-anion is in a general position. The cyclam ligand is hydrogen bonded to the acetonitrile as well as to the chloride anion. One of the phenyl rings of the anion and the acetonitrile solvent molecule are each disordered over two sets of sites.
