Actinide structural studies. 15. Two 1,10-phenanthroline complexes of uranium(VI)

Unveiling the new function of uranyl molecular clusters as fluorometric sensors for UV and X-ray dosimetry

Simple synthetic modulation based on uranyl acetate and phenanthroline has resulted in two uranyl clusters (1 and 2) with different topologies and nuclearities. Notably, the dimeric complex exhibits distinct luminescence quenching upon UV and X-ray irradiation with detection limits of 4.30 × 10^-6 J and 0.32 Gy, respectively. To advance the practical application, 1 was further fabricated with polyvinylidene fluoride into a flexible strip as a UV and X-ray indicator.

Structural/electronic properties and reaction energies of a series of mono- and bis-uranyl dihalides equatorially coordinated by N/O ligands

Monometallic (UO2)(X)2(L)3 (L = pyridine (py), X = F (1), Cl (2), Br (3) and I (4); L = tetrahydrofuran (thf), X = Cl (5); L = pyrrole (pl), X = Cl (6)) as well as bimetallic [(UO2)(μ2-X)(X)(L)2]2 (L = py, X = F (7), Cl (8), Br (9) and I (10); L = thf, X = Cl (11); L = pl, X = Cl (12); μ 2 = doubly bridged) were examined using relativistic density functional theory. With changing from F, Cl, Br to I irregardless of in mono- or bis-uranyl complexes, bond lengths of U = O were calculated to be decreasing, resulting from strengthening of axial U = O bonds while weakening equatorial X → U coordination. This is further evidenced by calculated bond orders of U = O and stretching vibrational frequencies. A similar situation was is found in 2, 5 and 6 as well as in 8, 11 and 12, where N/O ligands are varied but the chlorine atoms are retained. The present study reveals that all these complexes have U(f)-character low-lying unoccupied orbitals, and their π*(U = O) antibonds are located on higher-energy orbitals. Complex 1 was calculated to show σ(U = O) bonding character for HOMO, and pyridine-character for other occupied orbitals; the fluorine ligand occurs in a relatively low-energy region. In contrast, the π(p) characters of heavier halogen atoms significantly contribute to most frontier molecular orbitals of 2, 3 and 4. Unlike this electronic feature of 2, complexes 5 and 6 exhibit mainly thf and pyrrole characters, respectively, for their high-lying occupied orbitals. Electronic structures of bisuranyl complexes 7-12, albeit a little more complicated, are revealed to be similar to those of the corresponding monouranyl complexes. Finally, energies of formation reactions of the above complexes were calculated and compared with available experimental results.

Linear uranium metallocenes with polydentate aromatic nitrogen ligands

Treatment of [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(5)]X(2) [Cp* = C(5)Me(5), X = BPh(4) (1) or I (1')] or Cp*(2)UI(2) in acetonitrile with the polydentate aromatic nitrogen bases phen, terpy and R(4)btbp led to the formation of the linear uranium metallocenes [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(3)(phen)]X(2) [X = BPh(4) (2), I (2')], [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(2)(terpy)][BPh(4)](2) (4), [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(Me(4)btbp)][BPh(4)](2) (5) and [Cp*(2)U(NCMe)(CyMe(4)btbp)][X](2), [X = BPh(4) (6), I (6')], [phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, terpy = 2,2':6,2''-terpyridine, Me(4)btbp = 6,6'-bis-(3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine, CyMe(4)btbp = 6,6'-bis-(3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-cyclohexane-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine]. The bent metallocene [Cp*(2)U(phen)(2)][BPh(4)](2) (3) was isolated from the reaction of 1 and two molar equivalents of phen in THF. The X-ray crystal structures of 2.2MeCN, 3.2THF, and 6'.2MeCN were determined.

Interaction of neptunium(V) with picolinic, nicotinic and isonicotinic acids

The interaction of Np(V) with all isomers of pyridinemonocarboxylic acid has been investigated, stability constants have been calculated using NIR spectroscopy. Single crystals of [NpO2(Pic)(H2O)2] (1), Cs[NpO2(Pic)2(HPic)]·3H2O (2), [NpO2(Nic)(H2O)] (3), and [NpO2(iso-Nic)(H2O)] (4) have been synthesized. Compound1contains infinite chains; compound2consists of isolated Cs+, [NpO2(Pic)2(HPic)]-groups and water molecules. In both3and4neptunoyl-ion NpO2acts as monodentate ligand with one of the O atoms of NpO2group entering in coordination polyhedron of the adjacent Np atom. Compounds3and4have layered and three-dimensional topologies, respectively. Crystallographic data: [NpO2(Pic)(H2O)2], space groupP¯1, triclinic,a= 6.380(2),b= 7.733(2),c= 10.700(4) Å, α = 96.49(3), β = 106.78(3), γ = 103.83(3)°, andZ= 2 (1); Cs[NpO2(Pic)2(HPic)]·3H2O, space groupP¯1, triclinic,a= 8.707(2),b= 9.777(2),c= 14.640(3) Å, α = 76.633(15), β = 78.75(2), γ = 86.55(2)°, andZ= 2 (2); [NpO2(Nic)(H2O)], space groupP21/n, monoclinic,a= 11.901(4),b= 5.5628(15),c= 12.124(3) Å, β = 101.05(2)°, andZ= 4 (3); [NpO2(iso-Nic)(H2O)], space groupP212121, orthorhombic,a= 5.742(3),b= 8.550(5),c= 18.512(10) Å, andZ= 4 (4). Electron and IR spectra of solid compounds have been measured.

Distorted Equatorial Coordination Environments and Weakening of UO Bonds in Uranyl Complexes Containing NCN and NPN Ligands

Treatment of [UO(2)Cl(2)(thf)(3)] in thf with 2 equiv of Na[PhC(NSiMe(3))(2)] (Na[NCN]) or Na[Ph(2)P(NSiMe(3))(2)] (Na[NPN]) gives uranyl complex [UO(2)(NCN)(2)(thf)] (1) or [UO(2)(NPN)(2)] (3), respectively. Each complex is a rare example of out-of-plane equatorial nitrogen ligand coordination; the latter contains a significantly bent O=U=O unit and represents the first example of a uranyl ion within a quadrilateral-faced monocapped trigonal prismatic geometry. Removal of the thf in 1 gives [UO(2)(NCN)(2)] (2) with in-plane N donor ligands. Addition of 3 equiv of Na[NCN] gives the tris complex [Na(thf)(2)PhCN][[UO(2)(NCN)(3)] (4.PhCN) with elongation and weakening of one U=O bond through coordination to Na(+). Hydrolysis of 4 provides the oxo-bridged dimer [Na(thf)UO(2)(NCN)(2)](2)(micro(2)-O) (6), a complex with the lowest reported O=U=O symmetrical stretching frequency (nu(1) = 757 cm(-)(1)) for a dinuclear uranyl complex. The anion in complex 4 is unstable in solution but can be stabilized by the introduction of 18-crown-6 to give [Na(18-crown-6)][UO(2)(NCN)(3)] (5). The structures of 1-4 and 6 have been determined by crystallography, and all except 2 show significant deviations of the N ligand atoms from the equatorial plane, driven by the steric bulk of the NCN and NPN ligands. Despite the unusual geometries, these distortions in structure do not appear to have any direct effect on the bonding and electronic structure of the uranyl ion. The main influences toward lowering the U=O bond stretching frequency (nu(1)) are the donating ability of the equatorial ligands, overall charge of the complex, and U=O.Na-type interactions. The intense orange/red colors of these compounds are because of low-energy ligand-to-metal charge-transfer electronic transitions.
