Synthesis, Crystal Packing Aspects and Pseudosymmetry in Coordination Compounds with a Phosphorylamide Ligand

This work reports the synthesis and crystal structure of new closely related coordination compounds, [ML2]·nTHF, where M is Zn or Mn; L is a phosphorylmethylamide derivative of benzothiadiazole; n = 1 (M = Zn) and 1, 2 (M = Mn); and THF is tetrahydrofuran. The zinc compound, 1·THF, crystallizes in a high-symmetry space group, I41/a, that is relatively rare for compounds with organic ligands. The corresponding manganese congener, 2·THF, with a similar crystal packing, features a pseudosymmetrical structure P21/c of the doubled volume of the unit cell as compared to 1·THF. The main difference between the structures lies in a different arrangement of solvate THF molecules, which likely modulates the crystal packing of the complexes. Another manganese solvatomorph, 2·2THF, reveals a fundamentally different crystal packing while exhibiting a similar geometry of the complex. We consider the problem of localization of solvate THF molecules and the types of their disorder by the example of compounds 1–2.

Self-assembly of 1,4-benzenedithiolate/tetrahydrofuran on a gold surface: a Monte Carlo simulation study

We report a Monte Carlo simulation study of the self-assembly of 1,4-benzenedithiolate (BDT), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and their mixtures on a Au (111) surface. We use the grand canonical Monte Carlo method to obtain the equilibrium adsorption coverage. Canonical ensemble (NVT) simulation is then used to explore further the structural information of the equilibrated systems. Our results indicate that BDT molecules adsorb onto the Au (111) surface with one of the sulfur atoms bonded to Au atoms. THF molecules form clusters on the surface. For BDT-THF mixtures, BDT can selectively adsorb on Au (111) to form a monolayer, whereas the solvent THF molecules either float above BDT monolayer or occupy vacancies on the surface that are not covered by BDT molecules. BDT molecules adsorb on a Au (111) surface with an average tilt angle of about 18-35 degrees to the surface normal. The tilting angle decreases as the coverage increases. In addition, the BDT monolayer constitutes an ordered herringbone structure on the Au (111) surface, and the ordering pattern is insensitive to the BDT coverage. In comparison, the THF molecules exhibit amorphous structure on the Au surface. Interestingly, simulations indicate that the bonding behavior of BDT molecules on Au (111) is coverage-dependent. BDT bonds preferably on the Au top site when the surface coverage is low. As coverage increases, most BDT molecules bond on the bridge and fcc hollow sites.

X-ray molecular structures and theoretical conformational studies of narcotic analgesics alpha-(-)-N-cis-3-chloroallyl-normetazocine, ethylketazocine, and ketazocine

The X-ray molecular structures of the narcotic analgesics alpha-(-)-2-cis-3-chlorallyl-2'-hydroxy-5,9-dimethyl-6,7-benzomorp han (1) and alpha-(+-)-2-cyclopropylmethyl-2'-hydroxy-5-ethyl-9-methyl-8-oxo-6,7- benzomorphan (ethylketazocine, 2) were determined. The structures and conformations in the crystal were compared and discussed with respect to that of alpha-(+-)-2-cyclopropylmethyl-2'-hydroxy-5,9-dimethyl-8- oxo-6,7-benzomorfan (ketazocine, 3) and those of 15 analogous compounds of the 2'-hydroxy-6,7-benzomorphan series whose structures were previously determined by X-ray analysis. Molecular modeling routines for 1, 2, and 3 produced configurations (N-equatorial) and conformations (distorted chair) of the piperidine ring that were in agreement with those found in the solids. Theoretical studies of the conformations and the rotational energetics of 1, 2, and 3 as cationic species were performed by both the force field (MM2) and the semiquantitative (AM1) methods. The latter method predicted three low energy conformations about N--C(12) and C(12)--C(13) bonds, one of these being more significantly populated (60-68%). The AM1 results were not reproduced by the MM2 method, which predicted four low energy conformations. An interesting common feature of 1, 2, and 3 that was noted with both methods was the restricted interconversion route from the conformational state to another through rotations about the C(12)--C(13) bond. The conformational results were discussed in terms of a working hypothesis for regulation of relative mu and kappa analgesic activities of benzomorphans.
