Abstract
Developing oxide ion conductors with new structural families is important for many energy conversion and storage techniques. Herein, a series of Ca-doped Yb3Ga5O12 garnet-type materials are prepared through a traditional solid-state reaction method, with their oxide ion conduction properties being reported for the first time. The results revealed that Ca substitution for Yb would significantly improve the conductivity of Yb3Ga5O12 from 3.57 × 10-7 S/cm at 900 °C under air to 1.66 × 10-4 S/cm, with an oxide ion transporting number of ∼0.52. The oxygen vacancy defect formation energy (∼0.127 eV) and the local structure around an oxygen vacancy were studied by atomic-level static lattice simulations based on the interatomic potential method. The oxide ion conducting mechanism was studied by the bond-valence-based method, which revealed three-dimensional pathways for oxide ion migration in both the parent and Ca-doped structures. The simulated activation energy of oxide ion migration decreased slightly from ∼0.358 eV in the parent structure to 0.346 eV in the doped one. These discoveries in the Ca-doped Yb3Ga5O12 will stimulate extensive exploitation and fundamental research on garnet-type materials.

Abstract
In this article, we performed symmetry analysis of perovskite-based multiferroics: bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3)-like, orthochromites (RCrO3), and Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites (Ca3Mn2O7-like), being the typical representatives of multiferroics of the trigonal, orthorhombic, and tetragonal crystal families, and we explored the effect of crystallographic distortions on magnetoelectric properties. We determined the principal order parameters for each of the considered structures and obtained their invariant combinations consistent with the particular symmetry. This approach allowed us to analyze the features of the magnetoelectric effect observed during structural phase transitions in BixR1−xFeO3 compounds and to show that the rare-earth sublattice has an impact on the linear magnetoelectric effect allowed by the symmetry of the new structure. It was shown that the magnetoelectric properties of orthochromites are attributed to the couplings between the magnetic and electric dipole moments arising near Cr3+ ions due to distortions linked with rotations and deformations of the CrO6 octahedra. For the first time, such a symmetry consideration was implemented in the analysis of the Ruddlesden–Popper structures, which demonstrates the possibility of realizing the magnetoelectric effect in the Ruddlesden–Popper phases containing magnetically active cations, and allows the estimation of the conditions required for its optimization.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric (FE) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are promising for potential applications as miniaturized flexible ferroelectric/piezoelectric devices. Recently, several 2D HOIPs [e.g., Ruddlensden-Popper type HOIP BA2PbCl4 (BA = C6H5CH2NH3+)] were reported to possess room-temperature ferroelectricity. However, the underlying microscopic mechanisms for ferroelectricity in 2D HOIPs remain elusive. Here, by performing first-principles calculations and symmetry mode analysis, we demonstrate that there exists a cooperative coupling between A-site organic molecules and B-site inorganic Pb2+ ions that is essential to the ferroelectricity in 2D BA2PbCl4. The nonpolar ground state of the closely related compounds BA2PbBr4 and BA2PbI4 can also be explained in terms of the weakened cooperative coupling. We further predict that 2D BA2PbF4 displays in-plane ferroelectricity with a higher Curie temperature and larger electric polarization. Our work not only reveals the unusual FE mechanism in 2D HOIPs but also provides a solid theoretical basis for the rational design of 2D multifunctional materials.

Self-Nanostructuring in SrTiO 3: A Novel Strategy for Enhancement of Thermoelectric Response in Oxides. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2019; 11:32833-32843. Abstract
Nanostructuring is recognized as an efficient route for enhancing thermoelectric response. Here, we report a new synthesis strategy for nanostructuring oxide ceramics and demonstrate its effectiveness on an important n-type thermoelectric SrTiO3. Ceramics of Sr0.9La0.1TiO3 with additions of B2O3 were synthesized by the mixed oxide route. Samples were sintered in air followed by annealing in a reducing atmosphere. Crystallographic data from X-ray and electron diffraction showed Pm3̅m cubic symmetry for all the samples. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) showed the formation of a core-shell type structure within the grains for the annealed ceramics. The cores contain nanosize features comprising pairs of nanosize voids and particles; the feature sizes depend on annealing time. Atomic-resolution, high-angle annular-dark-field imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM-HAADF-EELS) showed the particles to be rich in Ti and the areas around the voids to contain high concentrations of Ti3+. Additionally, dislocations were observed, with significantly higher densities in the shell areas. The observed dislocations are combined (100) and (110) edge dislocations. The major impact of the core-shell type microstructures, with nanosize inclusions, is the reduction of the thermal conductivity. Sr0.9La0.1TiO3 ceramics containing grain boundary shells of size ≈ 1 μm and inclusions in the core of 60-80 nm exhibit a peak power factor of 1600 μW/m·K2 at 540 K; at 1000 K, they exhibit a low thermal conductivity (2.75 W/m·K) and a power factor of 1050 μW/m·K2 leading to a high of ZT of 0.39 ± 0.03. This is the highest ZT reported so far for Sr0.9La0.1TiO3 based-compositions. This nanostructuring strategy should be readily applicable to other functional oxides.

Abstract
Hybrid improper ferroelectricity (HIF) denotes a new class of polar instability by the mixture of two octahedral-distortion modes and can feature the coexistence of abundant head-to-head and tail-to-tail polar domains, of which the domain walls tend to be charged due to the respective screening charges with an opposite sign. However, no such coexisting carriers are available in the materials. Using group-theoretical, microscopic, and spectroscopic analyses, we establish the existence of a hidden antipolar order parameter in model HIF (Ca,Sr)_{3}Ti_{2}O_{7} by the condensation of a weak, previously unnoticed antipolar lattice instability, turning the order-parameter spaces to be multicomponent with the distinct polar-antipolar intertwining and accompanied formation of Néel-type twinlike antipolar domain walls (few nanometers) between the head-to-head and tail-to-tail domains. The finite-width Néel walls and correlated domain topology inherently lift the polar divergences between the domains, casting an emergent exemplification of charged domain-wall screening by an antipolar ingredient.

Abstract
A variety of up-and-coming applications of piezoluminescence in artificial skins, structural health diagnosis, and mechano-driven lightings and displays recently have triggered an intense research effort to design and develop new piezoluminescent materials. In this work, we deduced and verified an efficient piezoluminescence in ferroelectric Ca3Ti2O7:Pr3+ long-persistent phosphor, in view of three fundamental elements forming piezoluminescence - piezoelectricity, luminescent centers and carrier traps. Under the stimulation of mechanical actions including compression and friction, Ca3Ti2O7:Pr3+ shows an intense red emission from 1D2-3H4 transition of Pr3+. On the basis of investigations on structural and optical characteristics especially photoluminescence, persistent luminescence and thermoluminescence, we finally proposed a possible piezoluminescent mechanism in Ca3Ti2O7:Pr3+. Our research is expected to expand the horizon of existing piezoluminescent materials, accelerating the development and application of new materials.

Abstract
We identify a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) phonon mode in the layered-perovskite Ca_{3}Ti_{2}O_{7}, which exhibits an acoustic branch with quadratic dispersion. Using first-principles methods, we show this mode exhibits atomic displacements perpendicular to the layered [CaTiO_{3}]_{2} blocks comprising the structure and a negative Grüneisen parameter. Owing to these quasi-2D structural and dynamical features, we find that the mode can be utilized to realize unusual membrane effects, including a tunable negative thermal expansion (NTE) and a rare pressure-independent thermal softening of the bulk modulus. Detailed microscopic analysis shows that the NTE relies on strong intralayer Ti-O covalent bonding and weaker interlayer interactions, which is in contrast to conventional NTE mechanisms for perovskites, such as rigid-unit modes, structural transitions, and electronic or magnetic ordering. The general application of the quasi-2D lattice dynamics opens exciting avenues for the control of lattice dynamical and thermodynamic responses of other complex layered compounds through rational chemical substitution, as we show in A_{3}Zr_{2}O_{7} (A=Ca, Sr), and by heterostructuring.

Abstract
Charged polar interfaces such as charged ferroelectric walls or heterostructured interfaces of ZnO/(Zn,Mg)O and LaAlO3/SrTiO3, across which the normal component of electric polarization changes suddenly, can host large two-dimensional conduction. Charged ferroelectric walls, which are energetically unfavourable in general, were found to be mysteriously abundant in hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr)3Ti2O7 crystals. From the exploration of antiphase boundaries in bilayer-perovskites, here we discover that each of four polarization-direction states is degenerate with two antiphase domains, and these eight structural variants form a Z4 × Z2 domain structure with Z3 vortices and five distinct types of domain walls, whose topology is directly relevant to the presence of abundant charged walls. We also discover a zipper-like nature of antiphase boundaries, which are the reversible creation/annihilation centres of pairs of two types of ferroelectric walls (and also Z3-vortex pairs) in 90° and 180° polarization switching. Our results demonstrate the unexpectedly rich nature of hybrid improper ferroelectricity.

Abstract
The design and discovery of new multiferroics, or materials that display both ferroelectricity and long-range magnetic order, is of fundamental importance for new electronic technologies based on low-power consumption. Far too often, however, the mechanisms causing these properties to arise are incompatible or occur at ordering temperatures below room temperature. One design strategy which has gained considerable interest is to begin with a magnetic material, and find novel ways to induce a spontaneous electric polarization within the structure. To this end, anharmonic interactions coupling multiple lattice modes have been used to lift inversion symmetry in magnetic dielectrics. Here we provide an overview of the microscopic mechanisms by which various types of cooperative atomic displacements result in ferroelectricity through anharmonic multi-mode coupling, as well as the types of materials most conducive to these lattice instabilities. The review includes a description of the origins of the displacive modes, a classification of possible non-polar lattice modes, as well as how their coupling can produce spontaneous polarizations. We then survey the recent improper ferroelectric literature, and describe how the materials discussed fall within a proposed classification scheme, offering new directions for the theoretical design of magnetic ferroelectrics. Finally, we offer prospects for the future discovery of new magnetic improper ferroelectrics, as well as detail remaining challenges and open questions facing this exciting new field.

Abstract
On the basis of successful first-principles predictions of new functional ferroelectric materials, a number of new ferroelectrics have been experimentally discovered. Using trilinear coupling of two types of octahedron rotation, hybrid improper ferroelectricity has been theoretically predicted in ordered perovskites and the Ruddlesden-Popper compounds (Ca3Ti2O7, Ca3Mn2O7 and (Ca/Sr/Ba)3(Sn/Zr/Ge)2O7). However, the ferroelectricity of these compounds has never been experimentally confirmed and even their polar nature has been under debate. Here we provide the first experimental demonstration of room-temperature switchable polarization in bulk crystals of Ca3Ti2O7, as well as Sr-doped Ca3Ti2O7. Furthermore, (Ca, Sr)3Ti2O7 is found to exhibit an intriguing ferroelectric domain structure resulting from orthorhombic twins and (switchable) planar polarization. The planar domain structure accompanies abundant charged domain walls with conducting head-to-head and insulating tail-to-tail configurations, which exhibit a conduction difference of two orders of magnitude. These discoveries provide new research opportunities, not only for new stable ferroelectrics of Ruddlesden-Popper compounds, but also for meandering conducting domain walls formed by planar polarization.

Abstract
Crystalline materials that combine electrical polarization and magnetization could be advantageous in applications such as information storage, but these properties are usually considered to have incompatible chemical bonding and electronic requirements. Recent theoretical work on perovskite materials suggested a route for combining both properties. We used crystal chemistry to engineer specific atomic displacements in a layered perovskite, (Ca(y)Sr(1- y))(1.15)Tb(1.85)Fe2O7, that change its symmetry and simultaneously generate electrical polarization and magnetization above room temperature. The two resulting properties are magnetoelectrically coupled as they arise from the same displacements.

Abstract
We present new results on the microscopic nature of the ferroelectricity mechanisms in Ca3 Mn2O7 and Ca3Ti2O7. To the first approximation, we confirm the hybrid improper ferroelectric mechanism recently proposed by Benedek and Fennie for these Ruddlesden-Popper compounds. However, in Ca3Mn2O7 we find that there is a complex competition between lattice modes of different symmetry which leads to a phase coexistence over a large temperature range and the "symmetry trapping" of a soft mode. This trapping of the soft mode leads to a large uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) reaching a maximum between 250 and 350 K (3.6×10^(-6) K^{-1}) representing the only sizable NTE reported for these and related perovskite materials to date. Our results suggest a systematic strategy for designing and searching for ceramics with large NTE coefficients.

Abstract
A new metric is proposed to improve the fidelity of structures refined against precession electron diffraction data. The inherent dynamical nature of electron diffraction ensures that direct refinement of recorded intensities against structure-factor amplitudes can be prone to systematic errors. Here it is shown that the relative intensity of precessed reflections, their rank, can be used as an alternative metric for refinement. Experimental data from erbium pyrogermanate show that applying precession reduces the dynamical transfer of intensity between reflections and hence stabilizes their rank, enabling accurate and reliable structural refinements. This approach is then applied successfully to an unknown structure of an oxygen-deficient bismuth manganite resulting in a refined structural model that is similar to a calcium analogue.

Abstract
Single crystals of Ca(4)Fe(2)Mn(0.5)Ti(0.5)O(9) have been synthesized using a flux method. The structural characterization using single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the space group Amma and unit-cell dimensions of a = 5.3510 (6), b = 26.669 (3), c = 5.4914 (6) Å. The structure is isotypic with Sr(3)NdFe(3)O(9) [Barrier et al. (2005). Chem. Mater. 17, 6619-6623] and exhibits separated brownmillerite-type layers. One-dimensional diffuse scattering shows that the unit cell is doubled along c by alternating the intra-layer order of tetrahedral chains, causing stacking faults along the b direction. A computer simulation was performed, proving that the observed intensity variations along the diffuse scattering rods originates from two different local structures depending on the configuration of the tetrahedral chains. Selected-area electron diffraction experiments exhibit well ordered regions characterized by satellite reflections corresponding to two different superstructures. Both superstructures can be described using the superspace group A2(1)/m(0βγ)0s, with γ = 0.5 and β ≃ 0.27 or β = 0.

Abstract
First-principles calculations are presented for the layered perovskite Ca3Mn2O7. The results reveal a rich set of coupled structural, magnetic, and polar domains in which oxygen octahedron rotations induce ferroelectricity, magnetoelectricity, and weak ferromagnetism. The key point is that the rotation distortion is a combination of two nonpolar modes with different symmetries. We use the term "hybrid" improper ferroelectricity to describe this phenomenon and discuss how control over magnetism is achieved through these functional antiferrodistortive octahedron rotations.

Abstract
The electronic structure of a series of double layer (Sr(3)V(2)O(7), KLaNb(2)O(7), Li(2)SrNb(2)O(7), RbLaNb(2)O(7), Rb(2)LaNb(2)O(7)) as well as triple layer (Ca(4)Ti(3)O(10), K(2)La(2)Ti(3)O(10), Sr(4)V(3)O(9.7), CsCa(2)Nb(3)O(10)) Dion-Jacobson and Ruddlesden-Popper phases and quadruple layer A(n)()B(n)(O(3)(n)(+2) phases (Sr(2)Nb(2)O(7) as well as the low-temperature and room-temperature structures of Sr(2)Ta(2)O(7)) has been studied by means of a first-principles density functional theory approach. The results are rationalized on the basis of a simple tight-binding scheme, which provides a simple yet precise scheme allowing the correlation of the crystal structure details and the nature of the bottom t(2g)-block band levels. Both the quantitative and the qualitative approaches are used to analyze the nature of the carriers in intercalated samples of the d(0) semiconducting phases as well as those of the metallic d(x) (0 < x < or = 1) systems. The Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson materials with partially filled t(2g)-block bands must be genuine two-dimensional metals except when the M-O(ap) distances of the outer layer octahedra are similar and the band filling is not low. The conducting electrons in these phases are almost equally distributed among the different layers. It is shown that the A(n)()B(n)O(3)(n)(+2) phases with partially filled bands are potentially interesting materials because they are structurally two-dimensional materials exhibiting one-dimensional band structure features. Finally, the possible application of the simple scheme to related materials such as layered perovskite oxynitrides and the effect of disorder are briefly discussed.
