Room-Temperatrue Structure and Geometrical Analysis of the Cubic–Tetragonal Phase Transition in Dodecasil 3C-THF

Thermally Induced Phase Transition of Cubic Structure II Hydrate: Crystal Structures of Tetrahydropyran-CO2 Binary Hydrate

We report a thermally induced phase transition of cubic structure II hydrates of tetrahydropyran (THP) and CO₂ below about 140 K. The phase transition was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction measurements at variable temperatures. A dynamical ordering of the CO₂ guests in small pentagonal dodecahedral 5¹² host water cages, not previously observed in the simple CO₂ hydrate, occurs simultaneously with the symmetry lowering transition from a cubic structure II (space group Fd-3m with cell dimensions a = 17.3202(7) Å at 153 K) to a tetragonal (space group I4₁/amd with cell dimensions a = 17.484(4) Å and c = 12.145(1) Å at 138 K) unit cell. The effect of guest molecules on the phase transition at low temperatures is discussed, which demonstrates that the clathrate hydrate structures and thermodynamic properties can be modified by adjusting the size and chemical structure of larger and smaller guest molecules.

The hydrocarbon-bearing clathrasil chibaite and its host-guest structure at low temperature

The natural sII-type clathrasil chibaite [chemical formula SiO2·(M12,M16), where Mx denotes a guest mol-ecule] was investigated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range from 273 to 83 K. The O atoms of the structure at room temperature, which globally conforms to space group [V = 7348.9 (17) Å3, a = 19.4420 (15) Å], have anomalous anisotropic displacement parameters indicating a static or dynamic disorder. With decreasing temperature, the crystal structure shows a continuous symmetry-lowering transformation accompanied by twinning. The intensities of weak superstructure reflections increase as temperature decreases. A monoclinic twinned superstructure was derived at 100 K [A2/n, V = 7251.0 (17) Å3, a' = 23.7054 (2), b' = 13.6861 (11), c' = 23.7051 (2) Å, β' = 109.47°]. The transformation matrix from the cubic to the monoclinic system is ai ' = (½ 1 ½ / ½ 0 -½ / ½ -1 ½). The A2/n host framework has Si-O bond lengths and Si-O-Si angles that are much closer to known values for stable silicate-framework structures compared with the averaged model. As suggested from band splitting observed in the Raman spectra, the [512]-type cages (one crystallographically unique in , four different in A2/n) entrap the hydro-carbon species (CH4, C2H6, C3H8, i-C4H10). The [51264]-type cage was found to be unique in both structure types. It contains the larger hydro-carbon mol-ecules C2H6, C3H8 and i-C4H10.

Clathrate compounds of silica

A review on silica clathrate compounds, which are variants of pure silica zeolites with relatively small voids, is presented. Zeolites have found many uses in industrial and domestic settings as materials for catalysis, separations, adsorption, ion exchange, drug delivery, and other applications. Zeolites with pure silica frameworks have attracted particular interest because of their high thermal stability, well-characterized framework structures, and simple chemical compositions. Recent advances in new synthetic routes have extended the structural diversity of pure silica zeolite frameworks. Thermochemical analyses and computational simulations have provided a basis for applications of these materials and the syntheses of new types of pure silica zeolites. High-pressure and high-temperature experiments have also revealed diverse responses of these framework structures to pressure, temperature, and various guest species. This paper summarizes the framework topologies, synthetic processes, energetics, physical properties, and some applications of silica clathrate compounds.

Rigid, flexible and impossible zeolite and related structures

The flexibility or otherwise of periodic tetrahedral TX2 frameworks formed by corner-sharing regular TX4 tetrahedra is discussed. In particular, when T-X-T angle constraints are included, a suitable embedding can often only be found, if at all, in an symmetry less than the maximum possible for that topology. Examples illustrating this are adduced.
