Fault diagnosis of blowout preventer system using artificial neural networks: a comparative study

Purpose

The increasing complexity of industrial systems is at the heart of the development of many fault diagnosis methods. The artificial neural networks (ANNs), which are part of these methods, are widely used in fault diagnosis due to their flexibility and diversification which makes them one of the most appropriate fault diagnosis methods. The purpose of this paper is to detect and locate in real time any parameter deviations that can affect the operation of the blowout preventer (BOP) system using ANNs.

Design/methodology/approach

The starting data are extracted from the tables of the HAZOP (HAZard and OPerability) method where the deviations of the parameters of normal BOP operating (pressure, flow, level and temperature) are associated with an initial rule base for establishing cause and effect of relationships between the causes of deviations and their consequences; these data are used as a database for the neural network. Three ANNs were used, the multi-layer perceptron network (MLPN), radial basis functions network (RBFN) and generalized regression neural networks (GRNN). These models were trained and tested, then, their comparative performances were presented. The respective performances of these models are highlighted following their application to the BOP system.

Findings

The performances of the models are evaluated using determination coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) statistics and time execution. The results of this study show that the RMSE, MAE and R2 values of the GRNN model are better than those corresponding to the RBFN and MLPN models. The GRNN model can be applied with better performance, to establish a diagnostic model that can detect and to identify the different causes of deviations in the parameters of the BOP system.

Originality/value

The performance of the trained network is found to be satisfactory for the real-time fault diagnosis. Therefore, future studies on modeling the BOP system with soft computing techniques can be concentrated on the ANNs. Consequently, with the use of these techniques, the performance of the BOP system can be ensured performing only a limited number of monitoring operations, thus saving engineering effort, time and funds.

A market modeling review study on predicting Malaysian consumer behavior towards widespread adoption of PHEV/EV

With the rising concern about climate change, there has been an increased public awareness that has resulted in new government policies to support scientific research for mitigating these problems. Malaysia is among the major energy-intense countries and is under an excessive burden to advance its energy efficiency and to also work towards the reduction of its carbon emission. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have the potential to lessen the carbon emission and gasoline consumption in order to alleviate environmental problems. Most of the energy problems linked to the increasing transportation pollution are now being reduced with the solution of the adoption of PHEVs. PHEVs are seen as a solution to cut carbon emission, which prevents environmental damages. Furthermore, PHEVs' driving range and performance can be comparable to the other hybrid vehicles as well as the conventional IC engines that have gasoline and diesel tanks. Thus, many efforts are being initiated to promote the use of PHEVs as an innovative and affordable transportation system. In order to achieve making the consumers aware of the adoption of PHEVs, we used a model which is based on the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB). This review is based on the factors affecting the adoption of PHEVs among Malaysian consumers. The model takes into account the ten key features that influence the adoption of PHEVs, such as environmental concern, personal norm, attitude, vehicle ownership costs, driving range, charging time, intention, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and personal norm. All these constructs are drivers towards the adoption of PHEVs. These factors affect the relationship between the adoption of PHEVs and how consumers intend to protect the environment. This review is based on improving how the "attitude-action" gap is understood as it is an important element for further studies on PHEVs. The aim of the research is to come up with a framework that examines how to modify the consumer's environmental concerns in acquiring PHEVs. This will pave the way for more academic research and future works that can emphasize how to obtain empirical results. The authors' recommendation is that, before a consumer's behavior is assessed and considered, an observation of the current technology is needed with methods and knowledge of the existing technology adoption aspect.

Coordination and responsiveness issues in SME supply chains: a review

Purpose

Globalization and liberalization of the world economy have leveled the field for all competitors across the globe. To face global competition successfully, SMEs have to break their isolation in the value chain. To overcome the dynamic challenges of the market, supply chain management can be an important tool for SMEs. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize different issues related to the coordination and responsiveness of supply chain management in SMEs, through a review of the literature.

Design/methodology/approach

In all, 116 research papers, mainly from referred international journals, are reviewed to identify the thrust areas of research. On the basis of the review, gaps are identified and a research agenda is proposed.

Findings

It is observed from the review that SMEs have not been very proactive in implementing supply chain management. These organizations face a lot of problems in coordinating their operations with other members of the supply chain. They are localized in functioning. On export fronts SMEs face many constraints due to lack of resources and poor innovative capabilities. To face the challenges of open global market, SMEs have to manage their problems and supply chain risks effectively. Research gaps are identified in different areas of the supply chain such as coordination and responsiveness issues, service quality issues, and performance benchmarking for future directions of research.

Originality/value

This paper explores the major areas for research on coordination and responsiveness of SME supply chains. The findings of the paper will be highly useful for the researchers to decide the direction of their research.

An investigation into the investment decision-making practices of South African institutional investors

Purpose

The South African listed property market has changed its legal basis from property loan stock companies and property unit trusts to adopt the more familiar international structure, real estate investment trusts. The main distinction is how shareholding is structured and investment returns are paid out to shareholders, which results in a different tax treatment. It is hoped that this change would attract more foreign investment, but it is questionable if this is sufficient to convince global investors who, amidst a seeming worsening of the stability in the political and economic environment, would probably need more insight into aspects such as investment decision making within these South African organisations. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a balanced scorecard (BSC) framework, this study investigates the relevance of investment decision-making frameworks in South Africa. A survey using a sample of institutional investors that are included in the South African Property Market Index was conducted.

Findings

The study found similarities in decision-making priorities of South African institutional investors to those of previous studies. With the focus on retail property, tenant mix and secondary to that, quality of the centre management team is found to be important for forecasting expected returns in a retail investment decision environment. Diversification strategies were found to have similar results to previous studies, leaning more towards geographic location than economic location. Further, the study suggested the use of a BSC framework, linking the financial information and different financial ratios to nonfinancial aspects that need specific consideration in a retail investment environment.

Research limitations/implications

Retail property is considered to be of particular concern due to the business enterprise value that could be created if superior management techniques are applied. The investment decision stage concerned with forecasting expected returns relies on financial and quantitative models such as those derived from Modern Portfolio Theory. In a shopping mall environment, however, future performance is driven by nonfinancial factors, for example, tenant mix and superior customer experience. Therefore, forecasting expected returns in a retail environment requires a nuanced approach relative to other commercial property sectors.

Originality/value

The paper is considered to be original in its analysis of the retail real estate market in South Africa. This offers new insight into retail properties specifically, but also how investors in South Africa react to decision-making practices. This adds value in the internationalisation of the property market and the consistency and transparent practices applied globally.

Probabilistic composition in quality management in the retail trade sector

Purpose

– The purpose of this paper is to discuss the application of a method for combining multiple criteria based on the transformation of numerical evaluations into probabilities of preference. It is applied to compare failure risks and to measure efficiency in the retail trade sector.

Design/methodology/approach

– The main conceptual aspect of the method employed is taking into account uncertainty. Its other important feature is allowing for the combination of evaluations in terms of joint probabilities. This avoids the need of assigning weights to the criteria. In the context of failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) it provides a probabilistic derivation for priority scores. An application of FMEA to the sector of services is discussed. Another area of application investigated is the assessment of efficiency.

Findings

– Details of the application of the probabilistic composition in the evaluation of modes of failure and in the comparison of operational efficiencies of retail stores are evidenced.

Research limitations/implications

– The study is limited to the retail market. Other factors might be considered in the reliability analysis and other inputs and outputs might be added to the productivity evaluation. The extension of the study to other cases and sectors is straightforward.

Practical implications

– Features of the evaluation of modes of failure and of productivity in the retail sector are revealed.

Originality/value

– The main contribution of this paper is showing how to use a probabilistic framework to measure efficiency in services management.
