Lean-circular maturity model (LCMM) for companies' self-assessment in terms of process, product and life cycle thinking

Rapidly diagnosing the status of resource efficiency and waste generation throughout the entire value chain is considered one of the key future advancements towards achieving more sustainable production. This study aimed to develop and implement a self-assessment tool to assist companies in decision-making processes for establishing circular flows based on the principles of Lean Manufacturing (LM) and Circular Economy (CE). The self-assessment tool employed a maturity model comprising several stages, which were designed through a combination of design science research and scenario planning. The Lean-Circular Maturity Model (LCMM) consisted of maturity levels ranging from 0 to 4, assessing strategies such as Resource Efficiency, Energy Management, Water and Wastewater Management, Materials and Solid Waste Management, and Chemicals and Emissions Management. The model was applied to nine companies varying in sector, size, region, and nationality. Their engagement in LM, and CE, differed, as did their strategy maturity metrics. Primary sector companies showed higher maturity in water-waste and chemical-emissions management. Larger enterprises focused on these strategies, with nuances based on region. The main findings indicated that 66% of the companies sought cleaner alternatives prior to mapping their production processes, which could lead to errors in planning and prioritizing improvement actions. Furthermore, 61% of the companies lacked sufficient training and employee awareness regarding the efficient utilization of resources. The absence of comprehensive actions to manage the life cycle of products throughout the value chain emerged as the primary barrier identified. To address these gaps, the LCMM offers a set of tailored recommendations for each company to enhance processes, products, and the value chain based on the final score obtained from utilizing the LCMM self-assessment tool.

Analysis of the MORT method applicability for risk management in supply chains

Although the Management Oversight and Risk Tree (MORT) method is considered a respected analytical procedure to investigate causes and contributing factors of accidents and incidents in different types of businesses, its application in Supply Chain Risk Management was not found in the literature (SCRM). Given this gap, the general objective of this research is to analyze the applicability of the MORT Method in SCRM. Methodologically, the research was supported by an in-depth case study in a cylinder requalification company located in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The case study included document analysis, direct observation and structured interviews based on questions previously defined by the MORT Method. As the main theoretical contribution, the research applied, in an innovative way, the MORT Method in SCRM. As the main practical contribution, sequenced, detailed and exemplified steps were developed, so that the MORT Method can be reproduced by other professionals in supply chains. As a limitation, it is observed that the case study only covers the cylinder requalification process, focusing on endogenous risks and failing to address exogenous risks in the supply chain. As a main result, it was possible to identify all the factors that contributed to the damage to cylinder valves; damage that has the potential to have severe consequences for other companies in the supply chain.

Insights from systematic literature review of supply chain resilience and disruption

Purpose

The study of supply chain disruption (SCD) and supply chain resilience (SCR) remains to be studied deeply in the field of business management. The purpose of this paper is to showcase a framework of SCR strategies to reduce the adverse effects of SCD using systematic literature review and data visualization.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a systematic literature review approach, the paper explores the concepts of supply chain disruption and supply chain resilience. Through rigorous systematic screening, authors studied papers on both the concepts and have proposed a framework for the same. The authors also have used data visualization and network diagram approaches for better understanding of the topic.

Findings

The systematic literature review of both the concepts brings out some exciting results which give a new direction to supply chain field. The outcome of this research also outlines numerous future research direction, which will be useful for the research community.

Practical implications

The numerous strategies of SCR should be implemented by manufacturing as well as a service organization. The framework reported in this research help academician and practitioners to understand SCR and to easily overcome any level of disruption. Supply chain managers must also formulate strategies accordingly and make plans to continually expand the system.

Originality/value

This research is the first such attempt to showcase a formal systematic framework and co-occurrence networks as well as overlay networks of SCR and SCD.
