Two New Dimensions in the Cost of Quality

Understanding and application of quality costs in automotive manufacturing companies in North Macedonia: empirical study

Purpose

This study aims at presenting deeper insights regarding the understanding and application of the quality costs (CoQ) in the automotive manufacturing industry. The empirical research included three general determinants: reasons for, difficulties during and benefits from implementing quality costs, as well as two specific determinants: measuring and evaluating quality cost elements.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical research methodology employs the expert evaluation method – the Delphi method, using a survey questionnaire comprising a total of 200 questions, and answered by 9 companies.

Findings

The survey results showed that companies do recognize the reasons for implementing quality costs as a need arising from the quality management standards, the lack of knowledge of quality costs by employees and management as the biggest difficulty while the biggest benefit includes the quality costs enhance the company competitiveness. The costs competence and qualification, the quality management system costs, the costs for improvement, the production control costs, the input control costs, the new measuring and control equipment calibration costs, the costs related to scrap, repairs and product finishing are the most significant elements of the quality costs.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited by the small number of surveyed companies from the automotive cluster.

Practical implications

The proposed quality costs model provides to the management to conceive CoQ elements as possible drivers in the improvement process of product quality. The structure and the nature of the CoQ elements is expected to advance the process of detailing the quality costs elements.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper refers to development of a generic quality cost model, whose relevance is confirmed by the structuring of the model with elements published in literature and validating in research companies.

A decision-making model for the rework of defective products

Purpose

This paper proposes a decision support model that can be used to help decide the destination of defective products, for mass production industries. The objective of this model is to reduce the cost of the defect, and consequently reduce the total quality costs.

Design/methodology/approach

The decision model was developed based on the theory of quality costs and decision-making models, considering the practical aspects of reality through data collection, observation and experience in Industrial Pole of Manaus (Brazil) industries. A decision model adjusted to reality assists in the construction of the decision process, indicating the facts, data collection and the planning of the actions to choose the best alternative.

Findings

The specific contributions of this research are: (1) define a sequential structure of actions, effects and costs associated with defective items; (2) allow a comprehensive approach to failure costs, including various elements of lost opportunity costs; (3) minimize failure costs, and consequently reduce total quality costs, without necessarily investing in prevention and assessment; (4) describe the use and application of the built theory; (5) identify the quality cost elements most representative in existence of defective items; and (6) identify improvement points in the management of possible future defective items.

Originality/value

Much of the work of implementation of quality cost models do not emphasize the analysis of the destination of defective items. Also, there are no studies that use decision models with identification, accounting and evaluation of effects and criteria of quality, productivity and cost to define the destination of manufacture defective items.

Raising quality whilst reducing cost in health care: A retrospective cohort study

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between cost and quality within the health care sector and to establish which factors could influence this relationship. The aim was to investigate the dynamics of the relationship, in order to improve the quality whilst reducing the cost.

DESIGN

This is a retrospective cohort study, analysing quality, safety, and financial data from a 5-year period.

SETTING

A publicly funded tertiary hospital.

PARTICIPANTS

The dependent variable was cost saved, and the independent variables were patient safety, patient satisfaction, and clinical efficiency.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Financial savings and quality domains.

RESULTS

A statistically significant relationship between the variables was found. Multivariate analysis derived the equation Y = βX¹  + c, where Y is the cost saved, β is the beta coefficient, X¹ is the clinical efficiency, and c is a constant. R2 = 0.874 (coefficient of determination), which suggested that the cost saved by the unit varied due to clinical efficiency. Clinical efficiency accounted for 87.4% of the variation in the cost saved by the unit.

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicated that, after the trade-off value, an improvement in the quality would result in reduced costs for the unit. Clinical efficiency of the services was found to be the key factor determining this relationship. Therefore, strategies to increase clinical efficiency, and thus overall quality, above the trade-off level could result in significant financial savings. Patient safety and patient experience were positively correlated with clinical efficiency.

An improved model for the cost of quality

Purpose

– The purpose of this study is to present a report on the development of an improved mathematical model for quantifying the cost of quality. In addition, a simulation model is developed using real-life industrial data; the model is used to investigate the impact of certain quality control level plans on cost of quality.

Design/methodology/approach

– The cost of the quality model was developed based on the reported literature and suggestion from the company quality control manager. An extensive discussion was conducted with the quality control supervisors in the company to develop some quality control plans to investigate their impact on cost of quality. A simulation model that represents a specific section of the process at the company was used to carry out the investigation. The results were analysed and compared with some important findings reported in the literature that describe the characteristics of costs of quality.

Findings

– The simulation work provides valuable insights into the behavior of the different components that constitute the total cost of quality. The results show that reduction of failure costs can be achieved at low or no-subsequent increase in the non-conformance expenditure. In addition, it seems that the traditional accounting system approach may no longer be adequate since it depends mainly on direct labour costs. The results indicate that the direct labour cost is only contributing by about 3 percent of the total cost of quality.

Research limitations/implications

– This paper focuses on the development of a comprehensive model for quantifying the cost of quality in a semiconductor company. Future research is needed to expand the model for more complex process configuration. In addition, the developed model could be extended to deal with variant defect rates.

Originality/value

– This study presents an advanced theoretical model for cost quality that enhanced models of quality presented in the literature. Using the developed cost of the quality model, a comprehensive simulation was carried out to investigate the impact of some quality plans on cost of quality. The study clearly indicates important evidence to justify the implementation of cost of quality models in real-life industry.
