Blockchain Adoption for Generic Drugs in the Medicine Supply Chain with Consumers' Risk-Aversion: A Game-Theoretic Model Within Chinese Legal Framework

Background

Blockchain is expected to mitigate consumers' risk-aversion and quality uncertainty about generic drugs in medicine supply chains. This study investigates the effect of blockchain adoption for disclosing the quality information of generic drugs that compete with original drugs in the market and proposes legal measures accordingly.

Methods

We employ a game-theoretic model to analyze a medicine supply chain including a generic drug manufacturer, an original drug manufacturer, and a retailer. We examine when should the supply chain members adopt blockchain for generic drugs and how blockchain affects the medicine supply chain.

Results

Our results show that the quality information of generic drugs determines how blockchain adoption affects the price and sales quantity of generic and original drugs. Moreover, we observe that the generic drugs manufacturer and the retailer decide to adopt blockchain only if consumers' risk-aversion degree is sufficiently low. Also, a low risk-aversion degree can lead to higher whole supply chain's profitability with blockchain adoption, and generate a win-win-win situation of blockchain adoption for the consumers, the generic drug manufacturer, and the retailer.

Conclusion

To mitigate consumers' risk aversion, the law should safeguard consumer rights. Blockchain adoption can benefit the medicine supply chain and consumers under certain conditions. However, it also requires the coordination of supply chain members' benefits and the disclosure of quality information.

Research on contactless intelligent medication pickup mode selection based on a hospital in China under COVID-19

BACKGROUND

During an outbreak such as COVID-19, hospital staff needs to be in close contact with all types of patients visiting the hospital and the risk of cross-infection is extremely high. Payment and medication pickup is a mandatory part of a patient's hospital visit, with direct contact between healthcare workers and patients, and long waiting times in the hospital area, which can easily lead to the spread of disease infection.

OBJECTIVE

This paper designed the prototype of a contactless smart medicine cabinet based on RFID technology and optimized the patient consultation and medication pickup process to address these problems.

METHODS

We conducted a 50-day field observation of patients for consultation and medication pickup at the First Hospital in H city, Jiangsu Province, China, and randomly timed 1600 sets of data from Surgery (ophthalmology) and Internal patients, then we designed the prototype of a contactless smart medicine cabinet based on RFID technology, optimized the patient consultation and medication pickup process, comparing the traditional and intelligent models using AnyLogic.

RESULTS

The results show that this contactless medicine cabinet was able to reduce the time taken by patients in consultation and medicine pickup by 18.74 minutes, increasing the overall efficiency of the consultation by 32.20%. The simulation revealed that this contactless intelligent medication pickup model was able to reduce the time taken by patients in consultation and medicine pickup, increasing the overall efficiency of the consultation, effectively reducing the frequency of contact between healthcare workers and patients, and reducing the risk of disease infection.

CONCLUSION

The proposed technical model provides a new idea to solve the problems of long queues, low efficiency and high risk of infection for patients to consult and get medicine during epidemics. Especially within hospitals it has important theoretical and practical implications for epidemic prevention and control as well as future hospital management.

A hybrid framework to model resilience in the generic medicine supply chain of MSMEs

Purpose

One of the most important components of healthcare is the timely delivery of pharmaceutical products, such as life-saving medicines. However, disruptions like COVID-19 bring new challenges and risks to the pharmaceutical supply chain (PSC) and healthcare organizations that impact their operational performance. This study focuses on mitigating risks in India's generic medicine supply chain (GMSC) as a result of various disruptions, which can assist policymakers develop appropriate plans and strategies to build resilience in the Jan Aushadhi Scheme (JAS) of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in order to improve their overall performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Risk-causing vulnerabilities and resilience capabilities are identified from the literature review and expert's opinions. Following that, the vulnerabilities are classified into cause-and-effect vulnerabilities, and supply chain resilient capabilities (SCRCs) are measured using a hybrid fuzzy DEMATEL and best worst method (FDEMATEL-BMW) framework.

Findings

The outcome of the study reveals that transportation breakdown, loss of human resources and loss of suppliers are the potential risk-causing vulnerabilities that lead to vulnerabilities like shortages of medicines, loss of in-hand stock qualities and loss of sales/revenue. In addition, the analysis suggests that the sustainability of an organization with maximum weightage is the critical factor for building resilience in GMSC followed by flexibility, agility and visibility.

Practical implications

The integration of resilience into Jan Aushadhi GMSC can help in managing disruptions efficiently and effectively to mitigate risk and optimize MSMEs overall performance.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this work will be the first of its kind to model resilience in GMSC of MSMEs using a hybrid framework.

Construction and Application of the Talent Training System in Colleges and Universities Based on the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process

At present, the competition among talents to seize jobs is becoming more and fiercer. How to stand out in the fierce competition for talents and seize market resources is a problem that every graduate must think deeply. Domestic research on the composition of the implementation elements of talent training in colleges and universities from the perspective of excellent school talent training has achieved fruitful results. Their measures and implementation ideas mainly include the following aspects: first, analyze the system of talent training in colleges and universities; second, analyze the teaching methods of college teachers; third, analyze the future development direction of talents. Taking a university as a pilot unit, this paper constructs a talent training system based on the combination method of fuzzy hierarchy, determines the training goal according to students' own ability, formulates the talent training scheme according to the goal, determines the rectangular array relationship between the training system and students' own ability requirements and attaches importance to practical teaching. The algorithm used in this paper firstly establishes a hierarchical structure model and then combines the relevant measures of AHP to sort the weights of indicators and finally calculates the entropy value by quoting entropy weight. We use the fuzzy method combined with hierarchical analysis to evaluate the five indexes of students' own influencing factors, such as learning attitude, basic knowledge, cooperation ability, development ability, and professional ability. It can be seen that the algorithm model is more accurate and the error value is the smallest. Compared with their combination method, the fuzzy evaluation method and the hierarchical analysis method are practical, and the fuzzy method combined with the hierarchical analysis combination method has more practical significance. Finally, the employment situation of graduates is compared and analyzed to further highlight the effectiveness of the model.

Investigating sustainable development for the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain: a structural equation modelling approach

Purpose

Immunization is one of the most cost-effective ways to save lives while promoting good health and happiness. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has served as a stark reminder of vaccines' ability to prevent transmission, save lives, and have a healthier, safer and more prosperous future. This research investigates the sustainable development (SD) of the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain (VSC).

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigates the relationship between internal process, organizational growth, and its three pillars of SD environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability. Survey-based research is carried out in the hospitals providing COVID-19 vaccines. Nine hypotheses are proposed for the study, and all the hypotheses got accepted. The survey was sent to 428 respondents and received 291 responses from health professionals with a response rate of 68%. For the study, the healthcare professionals working in both private and public hospitals across India were selected.

Findings

The structural equation modelling (SEM) approach is used to test the hypothesis. All nine hypotheses are supported. This study examines a link between internal processes and organizational learning and the three sustainability pillars (environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability).

Practical implications

This study will help the management and the policymakers to think and adopt SD in the COVID-19 VSC. This paper also implies that robust immunization systems will be required in the future to ensure that people worldwide are protected from COVID-19 and other diseases.

Originality/value

This paper shows the relationship between organizational learning and internal process with environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability for the COVID-19. Studies on VSC of COVID-19 are not evident in any previous literature.

Assessment of Patient Satisfaction with Generic Medication in Emerging Economy Using the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing patient satisfaction with generic medication in India using the treatment satisfaction questionnaire for medication (TSQM) scale. This study proposed a set of hypotheses that were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). This study was based on primary data collected from 542 sample respondents using the judgmental sampling method. The findings of this study revealed an affirmative relationship of effectiveness and convenience with patient satisfaction with generic medication. The study's findings demonstrated that the TSQM is a psychometrically sound tool with high reliability and construct validity. Path analysis revealed that the effectiveness and convenience of generic medication contributed significantly to patient satisfaction, with standardized coefficients of 0.254 and 0.237, respectively.

A fuzzy multi-criteria framework to identify barriers and enablers of the next-generation vaccine supply chain

Purpose

Due to the introduction of new vaccines in the child immunization program and inefficient vaccine supply chain (VSC), the universal immunization program (UIP), India is struggling to provide a full schedule of vaccination to the targeted children. In this paper, the authors investigate the critical factors for improving the performance of the existing VSC system by implementing the next-generation vaccine supply chain (NGVSC) in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors design a fuzzy multi-criteria framework using a fuzzy analytical hierarchical process (FAHP) and fuzzy multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis (FMOORA) to identify and analyze the critical barriers and enablers for the implementation of NGVSC. Further, the authors carry out a numerical simulation to validate the model.

Findings

The outcome of the analysis contends that demand forecasting is the topmost supply chain barrier and sustainable financing is the most important/critical enabler to facilitate the implementation of the NGVSC. In addition, the simulation reveals that the results of the study are reliable.

Social implications

The findings of the study can be useful for the child immunization policymakers of India and other developing countries to design appropriate strategies for improving existing VSC performance by implementing the NGVSC.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study is the first empirical study to propose the improvement of VSC performance by designing the NGVSC.
