PURPOSE

Co-production improves the quality of healthcare services by prioritizing patient-centred care and ensuring optimal implementation. Current patient participation research have primarily concentrated on the co-production stages, despite patient participation being the central emphasis of its implementation. A study conducted analysed four specific attributes of patient participation, with patient engagement specifically emphasizing the interactions between patients and healthcare workers. Several studies have concluded that the interaction between the two actors is inefficient. This article examines current study trends concerning patient participation and identifies knowledge gaps from these studies.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

This study used bibliometric analysis. This study used VOSviewer software for bibliometric analysis. The Scopus database contained 398 publications about patient participation in co-production in healthcare, which served as the basis for the analysis.

FINDINGS

The study on patient engagement in a co-production context for healthcare had grown fast in recent years. Patient-centred approach and patient-centred care were two important things in patient engagement. Several factors influenced the implementation of patient engagement: attitude, ability, awareness, responsibility and knowledge. It is still uncommon to do research on the measurement of output and results from patient engagement implementation. Studies on instruments for measuring these two factors, particularly in a quantitative manner, are still few.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS

Various recommendations have been put forward for additional investigation. Firstly, further examination of outcome measurement in patient engagement is necessary, given the lack of decisive instruments available. Secondly, examining the most influential factors on patient engagement in co-production in healthcare. Thirdly, a more thorough analysis is needed regarding the dimensions of co-production, considering that some dimensions overlap, such as the activation and empowerment dimensions, which are really carried out during engagement. The researcher acknowledges the inherent limitations of bibliometric studies, including the dependence on the Scopus databases for extracting data and the choice of search phrases. Furthermore, conducting a systematic literature review may be necessary to thoroughly examine and delineate the research topics, methodologies and outcomes of this study.

This study updates us on patient engagement study trends and establishes a framework for implementing patient engagement in healthcare services.

A social cognitive theory of customer value co-creation behavior: evidence from healthcare

PURPOSE

Customer value co-creation behavior is promising but undertheorized. To bridge this gap, this study examines the viability of a social cognitive theory positing that customers' value co-creation behavior is shaped by their co-creation experience, self-efficacy, and engagement.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

Using healthcare as a case, a stratified random sample comprising 600 patients from 40 hospitals across eight metropolitan cities in an emerging economy was acquired and analyzed using co-variance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM).

FINDINGS

Customers' co-creation experience has a positive impact on their co-creation self-efficacy, co-creation engagement, and value co-creation behavior. While co-creation self-efficacy and engagement have no direct influence on value co-creation behavior, they do serve as mediators between co-creation experience and value co-creation behavior, suggesting that when customers are provided with a co-creation experience, it enhances their co-creation self-efficacy and engagement, ultimately fostering value co-creation behavior.

Good therapeutic connections and patient psychological safety: A qualitative survey study

BACKGROUND

Therapeutic connections (TCs) between patients and care providers are important for achieving desired patient outcomes. For patients, TC is associated with greater health self-efficacy, better health status, mental health status, and higher satisfaction with providers.

PURPOSE

The aim of the study was to examine patients' descriptions of what signals to them they have a TC with their care provider.

METHODOLOGY

We conducted an online survey of patients with a recent health care visit ( n = 1,766). This study analyzed the results of an open-ended question that asked how patients know they have a good TC with their care provider. Data were analyzed using framework analysis to determine the extent to which patient responses indicated TC dimensions. A thematic content analysis identified emergent themes.

RESULTS

Of the TC dimensions, words associated with Shared Deliberation were mentioned by 60% of respondents. Other dimension mentions ranged between 14% (Shared Mind) and 2% (Bond). Thematic content analysis revealed that patient psychological safety seems to be required for many patients to feel connected.

CONCLUSION

A majority of patients indicated that good TCs happen when they feel seen and heard by providers. However, it appears that prior to feeling a strong TC, patients need to feel safe to be fully welcome into the encounter.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Health care organizations need to give care providers the uninterrupted time and space they need to fully connect with patients. Training about how to create a psychologically safe environment for patients should be tailored for practicing providers, leaders, and students in health care fields.

What matters to you? An observational field study of patient and care provider expectations for health care relationships

Therapeutic connections (TC) between patients and providers are foundational to patient-centered care, which is co-produced between patients and care providers. This necessitates that we understand what patients expect from TCs, the extent to which providers know what patients expect, and what providers expect. The purpose of this study was to examine nine TC dimensions and determine which are most important to patients, which dimensions providers believe are most important to patients, and which are most important to providers. An online survey of patients (n = 388) and care providers (n = 433) was conducted in the USA in March 2021. Respondents rated the extent to which the nine TC dimensions were important to them, followed by open-ended questions to expand upon what matters. The quantitative responses were rank-ordered and rankings were compared across groups. All groups ranked "having the patient's best interest in mind no matter what" as the top expectation. Patients also ranked "caring commitment" and being "on the same page" as highly important. Providers were relatively accurate in ranking what they believed was most important to patients. Respondents affirmed the TC dimensions in the qualitative results, adding nuance and context, such as patients feeling "heard" and noting providers that go "above and beyond." Providers ranked dimensions differently for themselves, prioritizing "full presence" and "emotional support" of patients. This study is among the first to examine expectations for TC. TC could play an explanatory role in understanding variation in patient experience ratings and other outcomes.

The role of open innovation in addressing resource constraints in healthcare: a systematic literature review

PURPOSE

The resource crisis in healthcare can be alleviated by engaging external stakeholders and resources in healthcare delivery. The authors use value and open innovation concepts to understand what motivates the stakeholders to join the healthcare innovation ecosystem and what value such an ecosystem brings to healthcare.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

A systematic literature review following the PRISMA framework method was applied to reach the research objective. Out of a total of 509 identified articles published till 2021, 25 were selected as relevant for this review.

FINDINGS

Six categories of actors were identified, including innovation intermediaries, which were so far neglected in the healthcare innovation literature. Furthermore, patients, healthcare providers, innovation suppliers, investors and influencers were described. The authors also distinguished internal and external stakeholders. The authors show why and how open innovation projects contribute to involving external stakeholders and resources in healthcare delivery by contributing to patient autonomy, relationship building, knowledge transfer, improving collaborative mindset and culture, advancing know-how and bringing additional finances.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

This article is the first one to systematically describe the value of open innovation in healthcare. The authors challenge the positivist approach in value presented by value-based healthcare. The authors show how openness contributes to addressing the resource crisis by involving new stakeholders and resources in the care delivery process.

Aiming at inclusive workplaces: A bibliometric and interpretive review at the crossroads of disability management and human resource management

Inclusive workplaces rely on the joint optimization of disability management and human resource management. However, disability management has been predominantly investigated as an independent issue, overlooking its interplay with human resource management. The article delivers a bibliometric and interpretive review of the scholarly debate falling at the crossroad of disability management and human resource management, mapping the state of the art of this study domain. Departing from a knowledge core of 91 papers, 6 research streams were identified through bibliographic coupling. They account for the evolution of disability management from a fix-it initiative aimed at fostering return to work of people with disability towards a holistic management approach targeted at inclusiveness. Aligning the hard and the soft sides of disability management and embedding it in the organizational culture are crucial to enact inclusive workplaces and make organizations able to engage people with disability at work.
