Tackling nomophobia: the influence of support systems and organizational practices

This study investigates the growing issue of nomophobia, characterized by the anxiety of being without a mobile phone, in the workplace. Utilizing the broaden-and-build theory, this research examines the impact of supportive leadership, co-worker support, Human Resource Management (HRM) practices, and affective commitment on reducing nomophobia among employees. Data were collected from 393 employees across various educational organizations. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings reveal that supportive leadership significantly reduces nomophobia by enhancing HRM practices and affective commitment. However, contrary to expectations, co-worker support was found to increase nomophobia, suggesting that informal communication and social interactions via mobile devices might exacerbate smartphone dependency. HRM practices emerged as a critical factor in mitigating nomophobia, more so than affective commitment. This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the complex dynamics of workplace relationships and offering practical insights for organizations aiming to reduce nomophobia and improve employee well-being.

Perceived climate of Cha-xu and trust on knowledge sharing: a moderated mediation model

Purpose

This study aims to identify an antecedent that hinders knowledge sharing, namely, the perceived climate of Cha-xu. Based on the social exchange perspective, the authors propose a theoretical model that links the perceived climate of Cha-xu to employee knowledge sharing. This model focuses on the mediating role of two types of trust (vertical and horizontal trust) and the moderating role of task interdependence in influencing the mediation.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 509 Chinese employees, this study carried out a survey on an online platform. This study developed a structural equation model and tested the moderated mediation hypothesis by using Mplus 8.0.

Findings

The results showed that two types of trust act as mediators in the relationship between the perceived climate of Cha-xu and knowledge-sharing processes. The mediating effect of horizontal trust is stronger. Most significantly, findings show that this mediated relationship is contingent on the level of task interdependence.

Originality/value

This paper provides evidence for distinguishing vertical trust and horizontal trust in the field of knowledge management. From a managerial perspective, this study identifies traditional cultural factors for hindering knowledge-sharing processes within Chinese organizations.

A Study on Knowledge Sharing Behavior among IT Engineers: An Extended Theory of Planned Behavior

With the rapid development of information technology (IT) and the advent of globalization, enterprises have entered the knowledge economy era. Thus, knowledge has become a power for future enterprises to win. In practice, the more actively the employees in the organization share knowledge, the more they can exert the value of knowledge. This study adopted the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as the basic theory in the research model. Besides, by reviewing previous studies on knowledge management and knowledge sharing (KS), we found nine exogenous variables and examined their relationships with KS attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control. With a sample of 325 IT engineers in Vietnam, the study used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the hypotheses. The findings showed that the exogenous variables affecting KS attitude are expected relationship, expected loss, altruism, and task interdependence. The exogenous variables affecting the subjective norm are affect-based trust and task interdependence. An exogenous variable affecting perceived behavioral control is the adequacy of personal resources. In the relationships among endogenous variables in the TPB model, only the causal relationship of subjective norm influencing intention is not supported, and the rest of the causal relationships are supported. In the influence relationship between endogenous variables in the theoretical model of planned behavior, only the causal relationship of subjective norm influencing intention does not exist, and the rest of the causal relationships are established. Finally, findings can serve as references and suggestions for subsequent KS research in academic and practical aspects.
