Why people spread rumors on social media: developing and validating a multi-attribute model of online rumor dissemination

Cognitive disparity in online rumor perception: a group analysis during COVID-19

BACKGROUND

The harmonious cognitive alignment among various netizen groups is pivotal for the spread and amplification of online rumors. This alignment, characterized by shared cognitive inclinations, fosters uniformity in attitudes and perspectives, thereby precipitating synchronized engagement in the dissemination of such rumors. Notably, discernible disparities emerge in group cognition as different types of rumors pertaining to the same event propagate. This research endeavors to dissect the roles of netizen groups through the lens of cognitive variance, thereby attaining a more profound comprehension of the distinctive traits and behavioral dynamics of various netizen factions in the context of online rumor dissemination.

METHODS

By integrating Bloom's taxonomy and crafting a survey questionnaire, this study captured the cognitive responses of netizens to various online rumor themes across two critical dimensions: (1) Information Cognition: exploring cognitive processing levels from basic recall to application and analysis and (2) Attitude Change: evaluating higher-order cognitive processes such as evaluating and creating in response to complex rumor scenarios. The decision tree classification algorithm was meticulously applied to dissect the catalysts behind the cognitive shifts among netizens. Additionally, the K-Means clustering algorithm was effectively utilized to categorize netizen groups along thematic lines, offering a nuanced view of their cognitive engagement.

RESULTS

The initial impression of a rumor significantly influences netizens' final cognitive perceptions. Twelve characteristics were observed in netizen groups during the dissemination of rumors on different themes, and these groups were classified into four categories: knowledge-oriented, competition-oriented, social-oriented, and entertainment-oriented, based on their cognitive differences.

CONCLUSIONS

Throughout the lifecycle of online rumors, from inception to dissemination, diverse netizen groups assume distinct roles, each exerting a unique influence on the spread and reception of information. By implementing tailored governance strategies that are sensitive to the characteristics of these groups, it is possible to attain substantially more effective outcomes in managing the propagation of online rumors. This nuanced approach to governance recognizes the heterogeneity of the online community and leverages it to enhance the efficacy of interventions.

Social network influence based on SHIR and SLPR propagation models

The rapid progress of science and technology has revolutionized the dissemination of information, with the Internet playing a crucial role. While it has enhanced the ease of sharing information, it has also hastened the transmission of emotions on social media, sometimes resulting in unintended negative outcomes. This research seeks to tackle this issue by suggesting an innovative technique for analyzing social network influence using the Susceptible Hesitant Infected Removed (SHIR) and Susceptible Latent Propagative Removal (SLPR) propagation models. Through the development of an emotional communication model, we take into account the effects of news and public opinion on the rate of emotional communication among individuals. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of various network structures on user behavior. The findings from experiments demonstrate a notable relationship between changes in the density of emotion spreaders and hesitants and the influence of nodes in different network configurations. Specifically, the analysis reveals that the peaks of hesitators and disseminators were lower when the node influence was reduced. Additionally, we verified the precision and dependability of our model by examining data from the Baidu Index, a tool for big data analysis. The margin of error between the model and the actual data was minimal, underscoring the efficacy of our approach. In essence, the study highlights a direct correlation between the speed and extent of emotional propagation in social networks and the degree of nodes. The results showed that the density changes of emotion spreaders and hesitants were significantly correlated with the influence of nodes in different network settings. In the case of node influence of 0.86, the highest peaks of hesitator H and disseminator I were 0.101 and 0.109 lower than those of influence of 1.25. The data analysis of the Baidu Index showed that the maximum peak error of the model was only 0.04, which verified the accuracy and reliability of the model. This investigation carries significant implications for efficiently managing and steering the dissemination of emotions on social media, thereby promoting a healthier online environment.

Users' unverified information-sharing behavior on social media: The role of reasoned and social reactive pathways

Unverified or false information spread by irresponsible users can amplify the dissemination of fake news or misinformation. This phenomenon may not only undermine the credibility of social media platforms but also pose severe consequences for individuals and society. This study applies and extends the prototypical willingness model with the aim of comprehending the reasons, and decision-making process driving users' unverified information-sharing behavior a reasoned and intended pathway or an impulsive and unconscious one. Data from a sample of 646 users were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling to assess the determinative effect of both the reasoned pathway (attitude toward unverified information-sharing, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) and the social-reaction pathway (prototype favorability and similarity). Findings highlight the substantial role of the social-reaction pathway in forecasting users' unverified information-sharing behavior, with prototype similarity and attitude being the dominant predictors. Meanwhile, components of the reasoned pathway, specifically perceived behavior control, and attitude, also exhibited significant contributions toward predicting the behavior. In summary, while a deliberate, reasoned process has some influence, the sharing of unverified information on social media by users is primarily an intuitive, spontaneous response to specific online circumstances. This study therefore offers valuable insights that could aid relevant stakeholders in effectively regulating the spread of misinformation. Against this backdrop, highlighting potential risks associated with sharing unverified information and the negative portrayal of users propagating misinformation may contribute to the development of a more critical perspective toward online information sharing by users themselves.

The Effect of Social Media Forwarding on Subjective Well-Being in Chinese Older Adults: A Moderated Mediation Model

Purpose

In the intersection of the aging and information era, the development of digital aging significantly influences the well-being of older individuals. Given the divergent findings in various studies exploring the effects of social media use on mental health, this study specifically examined the impact of forwarding, a prevalent social media behavior among older individuals, focusing on the effects of use intensity on their subjective well-being (SWB) and the specific mechanisms involved.

Materials and Methods

A total of 323 Chinese older adults completed the questionnaire. SPSS along with Hayes Process Models 4 and 7 was employed to test the hypotheses.

Results

The results indicated that social media forwarding intensity significantly and positively predicted SWB of older adults. This association was partially mediated by perceived social support (PSS) and self-esteem. Gender served as a moderator, highlighting that the positive predictive effects of forwarding intensity on PSS and self-esteem were more pronounced for older men than for older women. Further, the findings confirmed the existence of the moderated mediating effect such that the impact of forwarding on SWB was mediated through both PSS and self-esteem for older men, while, for older women, it was solely mediated by PSS.

Conclusion

This study revealed the positive impact of forwarding, a user-friendly social media function, on the well-being of older adults and elucidated the specific mechanisms through a moderated mediation model. In light of these findings, we propose customizing the development of age-friendly social media functions to address the diverse psychological needs of older adults, taking into account gender differences. These findings may offer valuable insights for constructing digital age-friendly platforms and fostering active aging development.

Understanding Rumor Sharing Behavior During COVID-19: The Dominant Motivation and the Potential Consequences for Life Satisfaction

During the COVID-19 pandemic, rumors were shared widely and quickly, leading to unfortunate consequences. To explore the dominant motivation underlying such rumor sharing behavior and the potential consequences for sharers' life satisfaction, two studies were conducted. Study 1 was based on representative popular rumors that circulated throughout Chinese society during the pandemic to examine the dominant motivation underlying rumor sharing behavior. Study 2 employed a longitudinal design to further test the dominant motivation underlying rumor sharing behavior and its effects on life satisfaction. The results of these two studies generally supported our hypotheses that people chose to share rumors during the pandemic mainly for the purpose of fact-finding. Regarding the effects of rumor sharing behavior on life satisfaction, although sharing wish rumors (i.e., rumors expressing hopes) had no effect on sharers' life satisfaction, sharing dread rumors (i.e., rumors reflecting fears) and aggression rumors (i.e., rumors implying aggression and hatred) reduced sharers' life satisfaction. This research lends support to the integrative model of rumor and provides practical implications for mitigating the spread of rumors.

The Effects of Personality Traits on Online Rumor Sharing: The Mediating Role of Fear of COVID-19

This study aims to explore the effects of personality traits on online rumor sharing during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the mediating role of the fear of COVID-19 between them. We conducted this research using a web-based questionnaire distributed to 452 university students who were invited to fill it out. The partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method was used to test the data and model, with the yielded results demonstrating that three-extroversion, emotional instability, and conscientiousness-of the Big Five personality traits are positively related to a fear of COVID-19, with this fear positively affecting online rumor sharing. Moreover, fear of COVID-19 was found to act as a mediator between personality traits and online rumor sharing; thus, we can conclude that persons with high levels of extroversion, emotional instability, and conscientiousness are more likely to share rumors online due to a fear of COVID-19. This study furthers our understanding of the psychological mechanism by which personality traits influence online rumor sharing and provides references for anti-rumor campaigns taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it identifies key groups and sheds light on the necessity of reducing people's fear of COVID-19.

Cross-social networks analysis: building me-edge centered BUNet dataset based on implicit bridge users

Purpose

The intensive blooming of social media, specifically social networks, pushed users to be integrated into more than one social network and therefore many new “cross-network” scenarios have emerged, including cross-social networks content posting and recommendation systems. For this reason, it is mightily a necessity to identify implicit bridge users across social networks, known as social network reconciliation problem, to deal with such scenarios.

Design/methodology/approach

We propose the BUNet (Bridge Users for cross-social Networks analysis) dataset built on the basis of a feature-based approach for identifying implicit bridge users across two popular social networks: Facebook and Twitter. The proposed approach leverages various similarity measures for identity matching. The Jaccard index is selected as the similarity measure outperforming all the tested measures for computing the degree of similarity between friends’ sets of two accounts of the same real person on two different social networks. Using “cross-site” linking functionality, the dataset is enriched by explicit me-edges from other social media websites.

Findings

Using the proposed approach, 399,407 users are extracted from different social platforms including an important number of bridge users shared across those platforms. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves good performance on implicit bridge users’ detection.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the current scarcity of literature regarding cross-social networks analysis by providing researchers with a huge dataset of bridge users shared between different types of social media platforms.

The application of emotions, sharing motivations, and psychological distance in examining the intention to share COVID-19-related fake news

Purpose

Coronavirus disease 2019-related fake news consistently appears on social media. This study uses appraisal theory to analyze the impact of such rumors on individuals' emotions, motivations, and intentions to share fake news. Furthermore, the concept of psychological distance and construal level theory are used in combination with appraisal theory to compare toilet paper shortages and celebrity scandal rumors.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from 299 Taiwanese respondents to 150 toilet paper shortage-related and 149 celebrity gossip-related questionnaires were processed using partial least squares regression and multigroup analysis.

Findings

In both cases, surprise is felt most intensely. However, unlike in the celebrity fake news scenario, worry plays a prominent role in driving the altruistic sharing motivation related to the toilet paper shortage rumor. Furthermore, while emotional attributes (basic or self-conscious, concrete, or abstract) serve as a guide for how emotions change with psychological distance, the degree to which an emotion is relevant to the fake news context is key to its manifestation.

Originality/value

This study examines the impact of individuals' emotions on their motivations and intention to share fake news, applying the appraisal theory and the psychological distance concept in a single study to fake news sharing intention. It evaluates the relationship between psychological distance and emotions, revealing that it is not absolute and need not necessarily shift according to psychological distance change; rather, the relationship is context-sensitive.
