Using image augmentation techniques and convolutional neural networks to identify insect infestations on tomatoes

Pest insects are a danger to both regional and global food security. In Jordan, the most productive crop is tomato. Jordan's agriculture output is threatened by insect infestations. The study intends to use a deep learning model called convolutional neural networks on a dataset that includes eight categories of insect pest images. A dataset was used and a group of images from reliable sources were added to it. The image collection was analyzed, and an image augmentation technique was used to increase the number of images, which reached 5894 after image augmentation. The data was split among 80 % training and 20 % validation. Convolutional Neural Networks trained on the data achieved 90 % training accuracy, 85 % testing accuracy, and 87 % validation accuracy. A high-accuracy deep learning model was developed that may be utilized on mobile applications to detect pests that affected crops to assist farmers. The original database used was small in size. When tested on deep learning and machine learning systems, the accuracy was very low, reaching 50-60 % without image augmentation, despite image enhancement techniques.

Antecedents of agriculture supply chain performance during COVID-19: an emerging economy perspective

COVID-19 led to several complications like labor shortage, inadequate availability of supply chain facilities, price fluctuation, panic behavior, and uncertainty. Despite the challenges, the farmers and stakeholders adopted different strategies for sustaining the agricultural supply chain performance. Hence, the study proposes to explore the antecedents that led to the ASC performance and their linkages. The study combines literature review and qualitative methods to understand and recognize antecedents that impact ASC performance in developing countries. The conceptual model is built with the underpinning theory (the theory of commitment and organization). A quantitative survey follows the study to validate the theoretical model empirically using covariance-based structure equation modeling (AMOS). The ASC performance in the earlier phase of COVID-19 was disrupted. With time, ASC performance was managed by linking different antecedents. The findings reveal the application and linkage of organization theory and theory of commitment which led to ASC performance. The study finds a unique contribution among academia and practitioners by paving directions to manage the uncertainty during COVID-19 and any such risk triggers in the future. The study offers essential insights for practitioners and policymakers to develop a road map for ASC during the calamities.

A systematic literature review of food sustainable supply chain management (FSSCM): building blocks and research trends

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the increased research attention gained by sustainability in food supply chain management. Although previous review studies have focused on aspects such as traceability, food safety, and performance measurement, sustainability has rarely been considered as a means of integrating these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a comprehensive review of the literature on food sustainable supply chain management (FSSCM). Using systematic review methods, relevant studies published from 1997 to early 2021 are explored to reveal the research landscape and the gaps and trends.

Findings

The paper shows the building blocks and the main research directions in FSSCM, particularly considering the opportunities in “neglected” emerging countries. Insights are provided into the various elements of the sustainability supply chain in the food industry, which have previously been analysed separately.

Originality/value

Only a few researchers have systematically reviewed the literature or taken a bibliometric approach in their analyses to provide an overview of the current trends and links between sustainability and food supply chain management.
