The Effect of Job Skills and Job Burnout on Job Satisfaction Among Health Information Management Staff

Background and Aims

The health information management department faces multiple challenges such as multiple tasks, high workload, role ambiguity and conflict, and work pressure. In addition, informatics and health information technology tools are continuously used in this sector. Based on studies, the use of information technology affects job burnout and job satisfaction. Since no similar study has been conducted in the health information management department, this study was conducted to investigate the relationship between job skills, job burnout, and job satisfaction in health information management departments.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, the sample consisted of 201 personnel from the health information management department. A systematic random sampling method was used to select the participants. Data was gathered by using a questionnaire and visiting the selected hospitals in Kerman and Zahedan. For data analysis, SPSS 20 and SmartPLS 3 were used. PLS path models are fundamentally composed of the measurement and the structural model. To evaluate the measurement model, the formative measurement model tests were evaluated. Also, the hypotheses test, VIF, and CV-Red tests were used to evaluate the structural model. Then, the evaluation of the quality and suitability of the model was evaluated with the model fit test.

Results

The results showed that positive and significant job skills were associated with job satisfaction and a negative and significant relationship with job burnout. Also, job burnout does not play an intermediary in this context. In addition, the CV-RED values for all three variables were the moderate range. The SRMR value of 0.120, which is in the medium to high range, indicates an adequate fit of the model.

Conclusion

These findings provide useful information for decision-makers and human resource managers in the health sector and suggest practical strategies for reducing job burnout and increasing job satisfaction among health information management staff.

Towards a Holistic Framework of Knowledge Worker Productivity

Many jobs today are predominantly knowledge work. This makes organizations dependent on value created by knowledge workers (KWs). Many of the initiatives to improve and manage knowledge worker productivity (KWP) give unpredictable results depending on factors that are often hidden and unknown. It is important to find a holistic approach to improve and manage KWP that gives consistent results across many different organizations. This paper takes us a step closer towards that objective by mapping insights gained from a systematic literature review to activities in a purposeful activity model of the individual KW at work and, based on the findings, proposing a draft of a holistic KWP framework. The main components of the framework are the state of the individual KW, work done and outcome. The systematic literature review searched for papers with topics that touched on approaches, frameworks, tools, or models which aim to tackle the productivity, performance, effectiveness, efficiency, or management of KWs. Relevant concepts were extracted from each paper and categorized into groups. Twelve groups were formed of which six consisted of concepts relevant to individual KWs and their work: organizational commitment and engagement, communication and relationships, personal characteristics and development, personal knowledge management, well-being and job satisfaction and task approach.

Organizational Culture as a Prerequisite for Knowledge Transfer among IT Professionals: The Case of Energy Companies

The energy sector is the epitome of Industry 4.0; therefore, it should be developed in line with the Industry 4.0 implementation framework and be managed according to the guidelines dedicated to knowledge-based enterprises. Under this model of evolution, the layers surrounding the technological aspects are first, knowledge management (in particular, its transfer), and then people, and culture. This study addresses two of the three identified levels by attempting to verify the organizational culture that supports professional knowledge transfer as the leading factor in effective specialist knowledge exchange in the energy sector. Recently, this sector has become highly dependent on IT solutions as the main factor for its development and security. A key role in this respect is played by IT professionals, whose attitudes and employee behavior are critical to the stability, efficiency, effectiveness, and security of IT systems in the energy companies. The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical construct, based on indicated norms and values as organizational culture foundation and cultural practices. This article also aims to analyze and diagnose the components that support the professional knowledge transfer in different groups of organizational stakeholders. Systematic analysis of the scientific literature, expert evaluation, and structured questionnaires were used to develop and verify the hypotheses. The research results supported the hypotheses that organizational culture tailored to the knowledge workers’ needs and expectations, influence the effective and efficient circulation of IT expert knowledge.

Optimisation of knowledge sharing behaviour capability among sales executives: application of SEM and fsQCA

Purpose

This study aims to empirically investigate the effects of supportive, innovative and information technology (IT)-driven organisational culture on the optimisation of knowledge-sharing behaviour capability (KSBC) among sales executives. The authors propose that such effects are mediated by the sense of well-being (SWB) and IT-driven absorptive capacity (ITAC) among sales executives.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual model was developed. Survey data were based on a sample of 323 sales executives of different manufacturing and service-intensive (i.e. business to consumers) firms. The data analyses were conducted by structural equation modelling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) methods.

Findings

Results from SEM support all the direct relationships. Supportive and innovative organisational culture has a significant and positive influence on the optimisation of KSBC among sales executives, and these effects are mediated by their SWB. Moreover, the ITAC of sales executives mediated the relationships between IT-driven organisational culture and optimisation of KSBC among them. Results from fsQCA with the same data show that ITAC and SWB among sales executives are necessary conditions for the optimisation of KSBC. In addition, ten combinations of these variables were explored, where three sufficient conditions significantly influenced the outcome variable.

Research limitations/implications

This study is cross-sectional in nature and is conducted among sales executives by combining the data from manufacturing and service-intensive firms. To examine the proposed model, this study can be supplemented by future research using a longitudinal data collection method separately.

Practical implications

This research shows an effective role to optimise KSBC among sales executives in the field of knowledge management practice literature. Supportive, innovative and harmonious culture, IT-driven communication platform and well-established IT learning plans implemented by the firms can sophisticate to optimise KSBC among sales executives.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is a pioneer study conducted to explain the KSBC among sales executives by using mixed methods research. This research discusses the antecedent of knowledge-sharing capability among sales executives from the viewpoint of sales executive’s psychology and identifies the different roles of SWB and ITAC on individual’s KSBC.

Is Job Involvement Enough for Achieving Job Satisfaction? The Role of Skills Use and Group Identification

The main objective of this research is to evaluate the influence of job involvement over job satisfaction mediated through the professional skill use and moderated by group identification. The sample of the current research was composed of 420 subjects. The main results showed that job involvement was strongly related to skill use and group identification. Moreover, the interaction of job involvement and group identification is negatively related with skill use. Our results show that there is no statistically significant relationship between job involvement and job satisfaction. Furthermore, the use of skills is strongly related to job satisfaction. Lastly, we found that a strong group identification tends to harm job satisfaction values.
