Seeing the future: Predictive control in neural models of ocular accommodation

Ocular accommodation is the process of adjusting the eye's crystalline lens so as to bring the retinal image into sharp focus. The major stimulus to accommodation is therefore retinal defocus, and in essence, the job of accommodative control is to send a signal to the ciliary muscle which will minimize the magnitude of defocus. In this article, we first provide a tutorial introduction to control theory to aid vision scientists without this background. We then present a unified model of accommodative control that explains properties of the accommodative response for a wide range of accommodative stimuli. Following previous work, we conclude that most aspects of accommodation are well explained by dual integral control, with a “fast” or “phasic” integrator enabling response to rapid changes in demand, which hands over control to a “slow” or “tonic” integrator which maintains the response to steady demand. Control is complicated by the sensorimotor latencies within the system, which delay both information about defocus and the accommodation changes made in response, and by the sluggish response of the motor plant. These can be overcome by incorporating a Smith predictor, whereby the system predicts the delayed sensory consequences of its own motor actions. For the first time, we show that critically-damped dual integral control with a Smith predictor accounts for adaptation effects as well as for the gain and phase for sinusoidal oscillations in demand. In addition, we propose a novel proportional-control signal to account for the power spectrum of accommodative microfluctuations during steady fixation, which may be important in hunting for optimal focus, and for the nonlinear resonance observed for low-amplitude, high-frequency input. Processing blur of conflicting stimuli during the latency and onset of accommodation

The accommodative response (AR) to changes in dioptric accommodative stimulus (AS) during the latency period and onset of accommodation was investigated. Participants monocularly observed one period of a square wave in AS, with a 2-D baseline and mean, and amplitude 1 D or 2 D; the period of the square wave ranged from 0.10 s to 1.00 s; both increases and decreases were used for the first step in AS. At periods of 0.30s and longer, accommodation was found to respond to both levels of the stimulus. Rapid retinal monitoring appeared to be taking place for such stimuli. The amplitudes of peaks in AR did not usually depend on whether a particular level of AS occurred first or second, but for 8/40 conditions, a significant difference was found, with a stronger response when the level of AS occurred second. Null or incorrect responses were also observed in many trials, possibly linked with the natural microfluctuations of accommodation. Minimum response times to the changes in AS were observed, which increased with decreasing period of the AS. The time interval between peaks in the AR decreased with decreasing period of the AS. The findings were consistent with a parallel processing model previously proposed for saccades, where input from a later change in stimulus may enter an element of the control system when that element has finished processing an earlier change. More than one change in stimulus may therefore be passing through the multi-element control system at a time.

Human infants' accommodation responses to dynamic stimuli

PURPOSE

A young infant's environment routinely consists of moving objects. The dynamics of the infant accommodative system are almost unknown and yet have a large impact on habitual retinal image quality and visual experience. The goal of this study was to record infants' dynamic accommodative responses to stimuli moving at a range of velocities.

METHODS

Binocular accommodative responses were recorded at 25 Hz. Data from infants 8 to 20 weeks of age and pre-presbyopic adults were analyzed. A high-contrast image of a clown was moved between 20- and 50-cm viewing distances at four velocities (a step, 50 cm/s, 20 cm/s, and 5 cm/s).

RESULTS

Most infants who had clear responses were able to initiate their response within a second of stimulus onset. The infants were able to discriminate the different stimulus velocities and to adjust their response velocities and durations in an appropriate fashion.

CONCLUSIONS

The data indicate that by the third postnatal month infants are able to respond with latencies within a factor of two of adults' and that there is little immaturity in the motor capabilities of the accommodative system compared with the sensory visual system at the same age.
