The impacts of lens and stereo camera separation on perceived slant in Virtual Reality head-mounted displays

Stereoscopic AR and VR headsets have displays and lenses that are either fixed or adjustable to match a limited range of user inter-pupillary distances (IPDs). Projective geometry predicts a misperception of depth when either the displays or virtual cameras used to render images are misaligned with the eyes. However, misalignment between the eyes and lenses might also affect binocular convergence, which could further distort perceived depth. This possibility has been largely ignored in previous studies. Here, we evaluated this phenomenon in a VR headset in which the inter-lens and inter-axial camera separations are coupled and adjustable. In a baseline condition, both were matched to observers' IPDs. In two other conditions, the inter-lens and inter-axial camera separations were set to the maximum and minimum allowed by the headset. In each condition, observers were instructed to adjust a fold created by two intersecting, textured surfaces until it appeared to have an angle of 90°. The task was performed at three randomly interleaved viewing distances, monocularly and binocularly. In the monocular condition, observers underestimated the fold angle and there was no effect of viewing distance on their settings. In the binocular conditions, we found that when the lens and camera separation were less than the viewer's IPD, they exhibited compression of perceived slant relative to baseline. The reverse pattern was seen when the lens and camera separation were larger than the viewer's IPD. These results were well explained by a geometric model that considers shifts in convergence due to lens and display misalignment with the eyes, as well as the relative contribution of monocular cues.

Vection strength increases with simulated eye-separation

Research has previously shown that adding consistent stereoscopic information to self-motion displays can improve the vection in depth induced in physically stationary observers. In some past studies, the simulated eye-separation was always close to the observer's actual eye-separation, as the aim was to examine vection under ecological viewing conditions that provided consistent binocular and monocular self-motion information. The present study investigated whether large discrepancies between the observer's simulated and physical eye-separations would alter the vection-inducing potential of stereoscopic optic flow (either helping, hindering, or preventing the induction of vection). Our self-motion displays simulated eye-separations of 0 cm (the non-stereoscopic control), 3.25 cm (reduced from normal), 6.5 cm (approximately normal), and 13 cm (exaggerated relative to normal). The rated strength of vection in depth was found to increase systematically with the simulated eye-separation. While vection was the strongest in the 13-cm condition (stronger than even the 6.5-cm condition), the 3.25-cm condition still produced superior vection to the 0-cm control (i.e., it had significantly stronger vection ratings and shorter onset latencies). Perceptions of scene depth and object motion-in-depth speed were also found to increase with the simulated eye-separation. As expected based on the findings of previous studies, correlational analyses suggested that the stereoscopic advantage for vection (found for all of our non-zero eye-separation conditions) was due to the increase in perceived motion-in-depth.

Independence of Size and Distance in Binocular Vision

For too long, the size distance invariance hypothesis (SDIH) has been the prevalent explanation for size perception. Despite inconclusive evidence, the SDIH has endured, primarily due to lack of suitable information sources for size perception. Because it was derived using the geometry of monocular viewing, another issue is whether the SDIH can encompass binocular vision. A possible alternative to SDIH now exists. The binocular source of size information proposed by Kim (2017) provides metric information about an object's size. Comprised of four angular measures and the interpupillary distance (IPD), with the explicit exclusion of egocentric distance information, Kim's binocular variable demands independence of perceived size and perceived distance, whereas the SDIH assumes interdependence of the two percepts. The validity of Kim's proposed information source was tested in three experiments in which participants viewed a virtual object stereoscopically then judged its size and distance. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants' size judgments were more accurate and less biased than their distance judgments, a finding further reinforced by the results of partial correlation analyses, demonstrating that perceived (stereoscopic) size and distance are independent, rather than interdependent as the SDIH assumes. Experiment 3 manipulated participants' IPDs, one component of Kim's proposed variable. Size and distance judgments were overestimated under a diminished IPD, but underestimated under an enlarged IPD, a result consistent with predictions based on participants' utilization of the proposed information source. Results provide unequivocal evidence against the SDIH as an account of size perception and corroborate the utility of Kim's proposed variable as a viable alternative for the binocular visual system.
