Segmentation of magnetic resonance images using fuzzy algorithms for learning vector quantization

MRI brain images healthy and pathological tissues classification with the aid of improved particle swarm optimization and neural network

The advantages of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) over other diagnostic imaging modalities are its higher spatial resolution and its better discrimination of soft tissue. In the previous tissues classification method, the healthy and pathological tissues are classified from the MRI brain images using HGANN. But the method lacks sensitivity and accuracy measures. The classification method is inadequate in its performance in terms of these two parameters. So, to avoid these drawbacks, a new classification method is proposed in this paper. Here, new tissues classification method is proposed with improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) technique to classify the healthy and pathological tissues from the given MRI images. Our proposed classification method includes the same four stages, namely, tissue segmentation, feature extraction, heuristic feature selection, and tissue classification. The method is implemented and the results are analyzed in terms of various statistical performance measures. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed classification method in classifying the tissues and the achieved improvement in sensitivity and accuracy measures. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed technique is evaluated by comparing it with the other segmentation methods.

Automatic multi-modal MR tissue classification for the assessment of response to bevacizumab in patients with glioblastoma

BACKGROUND

Current methods for evaluation of treatment response in glioblastoma are inaccurate, limited and time-consuming. This study aimed to develop a multi-modal MRI automatic classification method to improve accuracy and efficiency of treatment response assessment in patients with recurrent glioblastoma (GB).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A modification of the k-Nearest-Neighbors (kNN) classification method was developed and applied to 59 longitudinal MR data sets of 13 patients with recurrent GB undergoing bevacizumab (anti-angiogenic) therapy. Changes in the enhancing tumor volume were assessed using the proposed method and compared with Macdonald's criteria and with manual volumetric measurements. The edema-like area was further subclassified into peri- and non-peri-tumoral edema, using both the kNN method and an unsupervised method, to monitor longitudinal changes.

RESULTS

Automatic classification using the modified kNN method was applicable in all scans, even when the tumors were infiltrative with unclear borders. The enhancing tumor volume obtained using the automatic method was highly correlated with manual measurements (N=33, r=0.96, p<0.0001), while standard radiographic assessment based on Macdonald's criteria matched manual delineation and automatic results in only 68% of cases. A graded pattern of tumor infiltration within the edema-like area was revealed by both automatic methods, showing high agreement. All classification results were confirmed by a senior neuro-radiologist and validated using MR spectroscopy.

CONCLUSION

This study emphasizes the important role of automatic tools based on a multi-modal view of the tissue in monitoring therapy response in patients with high grade gliomas specifically under anti-angiogenic therapy.

Clustering algorithms in biomedical research: a review

Applications of clustering algorithms in biomedical research are ubiquitous, with typical examples including gene expression data analysis, genomic sequence analysis, biomedical document mining, and MRI image analysis. However, due to the diversity of cluster analysis, the differing terminologies, goals, and assumptions underlying different clustering algorithms can be daunting. Thus, determining the right match between clustering algorithms and biomedical applications has become particularly important. This paper is presented to provide biomedical researchers with an overview of the status quo of clustering algorithms, to illustrate examples of biomedical applications based on cluster analysis, and to help biomedical researchers select the most suitable clustering algorithms for their own applications.

Automatic segmentation, internal classification, and follow-up of optic pathway gliomas in MRI

This paper presents an automatic method for the segmentation, internal classification and follow-up of optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) from multi-sequence MRI datasets. Our method starts with the automatic localization of the OPG and its core with an anatomical atlas followed by a binary voxel classification with a probabilistic tissue model whose parameters are estimated from the MR images. The method effectively incorporates prior location, tissue characteristics, and intensity information for the delineation of the OPG boundaries in a consistent and repeatable manner. Internal classification of the segmented OPG volume is then obtained with a robust method that overcomes grey-level differences between learning and testing datasets. Experimental results on 25 datasets yield a mean surface distance error of 0.73 mm as compared to manual segmentation by experienced radiologists. Our method exhibits reliable performance in OPG growth follow-up MR studies, which are crucial for monitoring disease progression. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that addresses automatic segmentation, internal classification, and follow-up of OPG.

Efficient multilevel brain tumor segmentation with integrated bayesian model classification

We present a new method for automatic segmentation of heterogeneous image data that takes a step toward bridging the gap between bottom-up affinity-based segmentation methods and top-down generative model based approaches. The main contribution of the paper is a Bayesian formulation for incorporating soft model assignments into the calculation of affinities, which are conventionally model free. We integrate the resulting model-aware affinities into the multilevel segmentation by weighted aggregation algorithm, and apply the technique to the task of detecting and segmenting brain tumor and edema in multichannel magnetic resonance (MR) volumes. The computationally efficient method runs orders of magnitude faster than current state-of-the-art techniques giving comparable or improved results. Our quantitative results indicate the benefit of incorporating model-aware affinities into the segmentation process for the difficult case of glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor.

A system for brain tumor volume estimation via MR imaging and fuzzy connectedness

This paper presents a method for the precise, accurate and efficient quantification of brain tumor (glioblastomas) via MRI that can be used routinely in the clinic. Tumor volume is considered useful in evaluating disease progression and response to therapy, and in assessing the need for changes in treatment plans. We use multiple MRI protocols including FLAIR, T1, and T1 with Gd enhancement to gather information about different aspects of the tumor and its vicinity. These include enhancing tissue, nonenhancing tumor, edema, and combinations of edema and tumor. We have adapted the fuzzy connectedness framework for tumor segmentation in this work and the method requires only limited user interaction in routine clinical use. The system has been tested for its precision, accuracy, and efficiency, utilizing 10 patient studies. The percent coefficient of variation (% CV) in volume due to operator subjectivity in specifying seeds for fuzzy connectedness segmentation is less than 1%. The mean operator and computer time required per study for estimating the volumes of both edema and enhancing tumor is about 16 min. The software package is designed to run under operator supervision. Delineation has been found to agree with the operators' visual inspection most of the time except in some cases when the tumor is close to the boundary of the brain. In the latter case, the scalp, surgical scar, or orbital contents are included in the delineation, and an operator has to exclude this manually. The methodology is rapid, robust, consistent, yielding highly reproducible measurements, and is likely to become part of the routine evaluation of brain tumor patients in our health system.

Extraction of motion strength and motor activity signals from video recordings of neonatal seizures

This paper presents two methods developed to extract quantitative information from video recordings of neonatal seizures in the form of temporal motion strength and motor activity signals. Motion strength signals are extracted by measuring the area of the body parts that move during the seizure and the relative speed of motion using a combination of spatiotemporal subband decomposition of video, nonlinear filtering, and segmentation. Motor activity signals are extracted by tracking selected anatomical sites during the seizure using a modified version of a feature-tracking procedure developed for video, known as the Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) algorithm. The experiments indicate that the temporal signals produced by the proposed methods provide the basis for differentiating myoclonic from focal clonic seizures and distinguishing these types of neonatal seizures from normal infant behaviors.
