Validation of ultrasonic image boundary recognition in abdominal aortic aneurysm

DETECTION OF TRACKS IN AERIAL PHOTOS BY THE GIBBS SAMPLER

A problem of automatic detection of tracks in aerial photos is considered. We adopt a Bayesian approach and base our inference on an a priori knowledge of the structure of tracks. The probability of a pixel to belong to a track depends on how the pixel gray level differs from the gray levels of pixels in the neighborhood and on additional prior information. Several suggestions on how to formalize the prior knowledge about the shape of the tracks are made. The Gibbs sampler is used to construct the most probable configuration of tracks in the area. The method is applied to aerial photos with cell size of 1 sq. m. Even for detection of trails of width comparable with or smaller than the cell size, positive results can be achieved.

Ultrasound image segmentation: a survey

This paper reviews ultrasound segmentation paper methods, in a broad sense, focusing on techniques developed for medical B-mode ultrasound images. First, we present a review of articles by clinical application to highlight the approaches that have been investigated and degree of validation that has been done in different clinical domains. Then, we present a classification of methodology in terms of use of prior information. We conclude by selecting ten papers which have presented original ideas that have demonstrated particular clinical usefulness or potential specific to the ultrasound segmentation problem.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm segmentation method: level set with region and statistical information

We present a system for segmenting the human aortic aneurysm in CT angiograms (CTA), which, in turn, allows measurements of volume and morphological aspects useful for treatment planning. The system estimates a rough "initial surface," and then refines it using a level set segmentation scheme augmented with two external analyzers: The global region analyzer, which incorporates a priori knowledge of the intensity, volume, and shape of the aorta and other structures, and the local feature analyzer, which uses voxel location, intensity, and texture features to train and drive a support vector machine classifier. Each analyzer outputs a value that corresponds to the likelihood that a given voxel is part of the aneurysm, which is used during level set iteration to control the evolution of the surface. We tested our system using a database of 20 CTA scans of patients with aortic aneurysms. The mean and worst case values of volume overlap, volume error, mean distance error, and maximum distance error relative to human tracing were 95.3% +/- 1.4% (s.d.); worst case = 92.9%, 3.5% +/- 2.5% (s.d.); worst case = 7.0%, 0.6 +/- 0.2 mm (s.d.); worst case = 1.0 mm, and 5.2 +/- 2.3 mm (s.d.); worst case = 9.6 mm, respectively. When implemented on a 2.8 GHz Pentium IV personal computer, the mean time required for segmentation was 7.4 +/- 3.6 min (s.d.). We also performed experiments that suggest that our method is insensitive to parameter changes within 10% of their experimentally determined values. This preliminary study proves feasibility for an accurate, precise, and robust system for segmentation of the abdominal aneurysm from CTA data, and may be of benefit to patients with aortic aneurysms.

Strain estimation in abdominal aortic aneurysms from 2-D ultrasound

The rupture risk of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is routinely inferred from the maximum diameter of the AAA. However, clinical experience indicates that this criterion has poor accuracy and that noninvasive assessment of the elastic properties of the vessel might give better correspondence with the rupture risk. We have developed a method for analysis of circumferential strain in AAAs from sequences of cross-sectional ultrasound B-mode images. The algorithm is fast, semiautomatic and well-suited for real-time applications. The method was developed and evaluated using data from 10 AAA patients. The preliminary results demonstrate that the method is sufficiently accurate and robust for clinically acquired data. An important finding is that local strain values may exceed the circumferential average strain significantly. Furthermore, the calculated strain shows no apparent covariation with the diagnosed diameter. This implies that the method may give new and essential information on the clinical condition of the AAA.

Combining low-, high-level and empirical domain knowledge for automated segmentation of ultrasonic breast lesions

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy and the second leading cause of mortality in women. In the last decade, ultrasound along with digital mammography has come to be regarded as the gold standard for breast cancer diagnosis. Automatically detecting tumors and extracting lesion boundaries in ultrasound images is difficult due to their specular nature and the variance in shape and appearance of sonographic lesions. Past work on automated ultrasonic breast lesion segmentation has not addressed important issues such as shadowing artifacts or dealing with similar tumor like structures in the sonogram. Algorithms that claim to automatically classify ultrasonic breast lesions, rely on manual delineation of the tumor boundaries. In this paper, we present a novel technique to automatically find lesion margins in ultrasound images, by combining intensity and texture with empirical domain specific knowledge along with directional gradient and a deformable shape-based model. The images are first filtered to remove speckle noise and then contrast enhanced to emphasize the tumor regions. For the first time, a mathematical formulation of the empirical rules used by radiologists in detecting ultrasonic breast lesions, popularly known as the "Stavros Criteria" is presented in this paper. We have applied this formulation to automatically determine a seed point within the image. Probabilistic classification of image pixels based on intensity and texture is followed by region growing using the automatically determined seed point to obtain an initial segmentation of the lesion. Boundary points are found on the directional gradient of the image. Outliers are removed by a process of recursive refinement. These boundary points are then supplied as an initial estimate to a deformable model. Incorporating empirical domain specific knowledge along with low and high-level knowledge makes it possible to avoid shadowing artifacts and lowers the chance of confusing similar tumor like structures for the lesion. The system was validated on a database of breast sonograms for 42 patients. The average mean boundary error between manual and automated segmentation was 6.6 pixels and the normalized true positive area overlap was 75.1%. The algorithm was found to be robust to 1) variations in system parameters, 2) number of training samples used, and 3) the position of the seed point within the tumor. Running time for segmenting a single sonogram was 18 s on a 1.8-GHz Pentium machine.
