Modeling of highly loaded 0-3 piezoelectric composites using a matrix method

Orientation effects and figures of merit in advanced 2–2-type composites based on [011]-poled domain-engineered single crystals

Orientation and volume-fraction dependences of figures of merit are analysed for 2–2-type composites based on [011]-poled PZN–xPT single crystals. A large anisotropy of piezoelectric coefficients and modified figures of merit in a 2–0–2 composite is studied.

Modeling the Electroelastic Moduli of Porous Textured Piezoceramics

A new model for piezoelectric textured ceramics was developed that considers the presence of porosity, which can appear during heat treatment (ceramic sintering). In the long wavelength approximation, a matrix method, which has already been applied to piezoelectric composites, was extended to textured ceramics for three phases [porosity (air), piezoelectric single-crystal (related to the texturation degree), and ceramic] to calculate the effective electroelastic modulus. This method was first compared and validated with finite-element calculations. A computation was applied to two systems with lead-based (PMN-PT) and lead-free (KNN) compositions. The results showed that the introduction of porosity in the whole material promotes electromechanical performance, particularly the electromechanical coupling factor k_t , while limiting the degree of texturation. As an example, for the chosen PMN-PT system, an equivalent k_t factor of 60% can be obtained with 1% porosity and an 85% single-crystal volume fraction or with 16% porosity and a 40% single-crystal volume fraction. According to the database used, this tradeoff is different. With the chosen lead-free composition, the degree of texture is less important than in the lead-based composition. Consequently, the porosity content is of primary importance for significantly improving the electromechanical coupling factor k_t .

High temperature, high power piezoelectric composite transducers

Piezoelectric composites are a class of functional materials consisting of piezoelectric active materials and non-piezoelectric passive polymers, mechanically attached together to form different connectivities. These composites have several advantages compared to conventional piezoelectric ceramics and polymers, including improved electromechanical properties, mechanical flexibility and the ability to tailor properties by using several different connectivity patterns. These advantages have led to the improvement of overall transducer performance, such as transducer sensitivity and bandwidth, resulting in rapid implementation of piezoelectric composites in medical imaging ultrasounds and other acoustic transducers. Recently, new piezoelectric composite transducers have been developed with optimized composite components that have improved thermal stability and mechanical quality factors, making them promising candidates for high temperature, high power transducer applications, such as therapeutic ultrasound, high power ultrasonic wirebonding, high temperature non-destructive testing, and downhole energy harvesting. This paper will present recent developments of piezoelectric composite technology for high temperature and high power applications. The concerns and limitations of using piezoelectric composites will also be discussed, and the expected future research directions will be outlined.

Piezoelectric composites for sensor and actuator applications

In the last 25 years, piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites have been conceptualized, prototyped, fabricated, and implemented in an array of applications encompassing medical imaging and military missions, among others. A detailed snapshot of the materials used, and a detailed account of the major innovative methods developed in making various piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites are presented. The salient aspects of processing of such composites are summarized, and structure-processing-property relations are described using connectivity as the unifying central concept. Computer-aided design (CAD)-based fabrication methods, which result in composites whose structural complexity surpass that of composites obtained with traditional methods, are described to introduce the reader to novel concepts in processing of piezocomposites. A brief survey of some recent advances made in modeling of (0-3), (1-3), and (2-2) composites also is provided.

Effective electroelastic moduli of 3-3(0-3) piezocomposites

In a high volume fraction particle-loaded piezocomposite, some ferroelectric particles appear to be in contact, as in a 3-3 connectivity material; others are isolated in the polymer matrix, as in a pure 0-3 connectivity material. Such a material can be considered as a composite of composites characterized by a 3-3(0-3) connectivity. This paper follows two others that have described a matrix method to calculate all of the effective parameters of pure 0-3 and 3-3 connectivity piezocomposites. These previous models are used to obtain the effective properties of a 3-3(0-3) composite. A proportion of 0-3 connectivity in the composite is introduced, and the effective properties are studied as a function of this proportion. Experimental results compared with these predictions show that the model allows an evaluation of the proportion of 0-3 connectivity through the analysis of the electromechanical performance of the composite samples.
