Instance-based learning with prototype reduction for real-time proportional myocontrol: a randomized user study demonstrating accuracy-preserving data reduction for prosthetic embedded systems

This work presents the design, implementation and validation of learning techniques based on the kNN scheme for gesture detection in prosthetic control. To cope with high computational demands in instance-based prediction, methods of dataset reduction are evaluated considering real-time determinism to allow for the reliable integration into battery-powered portable devices. The influence of parameterization and varying proportionality schemes is analyzed, utilizing an eight-channel-sEMG armband. Besides offline cross-validation accuracy, success rates in real-time pilot experiments (online target achievement tests) are determined. Based on the assessment of specific dataset reduction techniques' adequacy for embedded control applications regarding accuracy and timing behaviour, decision surface mapping (DSM) proves itself promising when applying kNN on the reduced set. A randomized, double-blind user study was conducted to evaluate the respective methods (kNN and kNN with DSM-reduction) against ridge regression (RR) and RR with random Fourier features (RR-RFF). The kNN-based methods performed significantly better ([Formula: see text]) than the regression techniques. Between DSM-kNN and kNN, there was no statistically significant difference (significance level 0.05). This is remarkable in consideration of only one sample per class in the reduced set, thus yielding a reduction rate of over 99% while preserving success rate. The same behaviour could be confirmed in an extended user study. With [Formula: see text], which turned out to be an excellent choice, the runtime complexity of both kNN (in every prediction step) as well as DSM-kNN (in the training phase) becomes linear concerning the number of original samples, favouring dependable wearable prosthesis applications.

AI-Based Multi Sensor Fusion for Smart Decision Making: A Bi-Functional System for Single Sensor Evaluation in a Classification Task

Sensor fusion has gained a great deal of attention in recent years. It is used as an application tool in many different fields, especially the semiconductor, automotive, and medical industries. However, this field of research, regardless of the field of application, still presents different challenges concerning the choice of the sensors to be combined and the fusion architecture to be developed. To decrease application costs and engineering efforts, it is very important to analyze the sensors' data beforehand once the application target is defined. This pre-analysis is a basic step to establish a working environment with fewer misclassification cases and high safety. One promising approach to do so is to analyze the system using deep neural networks. The disadvantages of this approach are mainly the required huge storage capacity, the big training effort, and that these networks are difficult to interpret. In this paper, we focus on developing a smart and interpretable bi-functional artificial intelligence (AI) system, which has to discriminate the combined data regarding predefined classes. Furthermore, the system can evaluate the single source signals used in the classification task. The evaluation here covers each sensor contribution and robustness. More precisely, we train a smart and interpretable prototype-based neural network, which learns automatically to weight the influence of the sensors for the classification decision. Moreover, the prototype-based classifier is equipped with a reject option to measure classification certainty. To validate our approach's efficiency, we refer to different industrial sensor fusion applications.

The enhanced LBG algorithm

Clustering applications cover several fields such as audio and video data compression, pattern recognition, computer vision, medical image recognition, etc. In this paper, we present a new clustering algorithm called Enhanced LBG (ELBG). It belongs to the hard and K-means vector quantization groups and derives directly from the simpler LBG. The basic idea we have developed is the concept of utility of a codeword, a powerful instrument to overcome one of the main drawbacks of clustering algorithms: generally, the results achieved are not good in the case of a bad choice of the initial codebook. We will present our experimental results showing the ELBG is able to find better codebooks than previous clustering techniques and the computational complexity is virtually the same as the simpler LBG.
