Bichaoticity induced by inherent birhythmicity during the oscillatory electrodissolution of silicon

The electrodissolution of p-type silicon in a fluoride-containing electrolyte is a prominent electrochemical oscillator with a still unknown oscillation mechanism. In this article, we present a study of its dynamical states occurring in a wide range of the applied voltage-external resistance parameter plane. We provide evidence that the system possesses inherent birhythmicity, and thus at least two distinct feedback loops promoting oscillatory behavior. The two parameter regions in which the different limit cycles exist are separated by a band in which the dynamics exhibit bistability between two branches with different multimode oscillations. Following the states along one path through this bistable region, one observes that each branch undergoes a different transition to chaos, namely, a period doubling cascade and a quasiperiodic route with a torus-breakdown, respectively, making Si electrodissolution one of the few experimental systems exhibiting bichaoticity.

Strange nonchaotic and chaotic attractors in a self-excited thermoacoustic oscillator subjected to external periodic forcing

We experimentally investigate the synchronization dynamics of a self-excited thermoacoustic system forced beyond its phase-locked state. The system consists of a laminar premixed flame in a tube combustor subjected to periodic acoustic forcing. On increasing the forcing amplitude above that required for phase locking, we find that the system can transition out of phase locking and into chaos, which is consistent with the Afraimovich-Shilnikov theorem for the breakdown of a phase-locked torus. However, we also find some unexpected behavior, most notably the emergence of a strange nonchaotic attractor (SNA) before the onset of chaos. We verify the existence of the SNA and chaotic attractor by examining the correlation dimension, the autocorrelation function, the power-law scaling in the Fourier amplitude spectrum, the permutation entropy in a pseudoperiodic surrogate test, and the permutation spectrum. In summary, this study explores the SNA and chaotic dynamics of a thermoacoustic system forced beyond its phase-locked state, opening up new pathways for the development of alternative strategies to control self-excited thermoacoustic oscillations in combustion devices such as gas turbines and rocket engines.

From quasiperiodicity to toroidal chaos: analogy between the Curry-Yorke map and the van der Pol system

The van der Pol attractor exhibits a wide variety of behavior depending on the control parameter values: limit cycles, quasiperiodic motion on a torus, mode locking, period doubling, banded chaos, boundary crises, torus wrinkling, breakup of a torus, and toroidal chaos. The organization of these phenomena with respect to each other is well described by studying a partition of the control parameter plane of the Curry-Yorke map.

Torus breakdown in noninvertible maps

We propose a criterion for the destruction of a two-dimensional torus through the formation of an infinite set of cusp points on the closed invariant curves defining the resonance torus. This mechanism is specific to noninvertible maps. The cusp points arise when the tangent to the torus at the point of intersection with the critical curve L(0) coincides with the eigendirection corresponding to vanishing eigenvalue for the noninvertible map. Further parameter changes lead typically to the generation of loops (self-intersections of the invariant manifolds) followed by the transformation of the torus into a complex chaotic set.
