Optimal time-frequency localized wavelet filters for identification of Alzheimer's disease from EEG signals

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic disability that occurs due to the loss of neurons. The traditional methods to detect AD involve questionnaires and expensive neuro-imaging tests, which are time-consuming, subjective, and inconvenient to the target population. To overcome these limitations, Electroencephalogram (EEG) based methods have been developed to classify AD patients from normal controlled (NC) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subjects. Most of the EEG-based methods involved entropy-based feature extraction and discrete wavelet transform. However, the existing AD classification methods failed to provide promising classification accuracy. Here, we proposed a wavelet-machine learning (ML) framework to detect AD using a newly designed biorthogonal filter bank by optimization of frequency and time localization of triplet halfband filter banks (OTFL-THFB). The OTFL-THFB decomposes EEG signals into various EEG sub- bands. Hjorth Parameters (HP) and Higuchi's Fractal Dimension (HFD) have been investigated to extract features from each EEG subband. Subsequently, ML models are trained and tested using different features such as OTFL-THFB with HFD, OTFL-THFB with HP, and OTFL-THFB with HFD and HP used for detecting AD with 10-fold cross-validation. This method was applied to two publicly available datasets. Our model achieved an accuracy of 98.91 % for AD versus NC and 98.65 % for AD versus MCI versus NC using the least square support vector machine. Results indicate that this framework surpassed existing state-of-the-art techniques for classifying AD from NC.

Fully automated determination of the cervical vertebrae maturation stages using deep learning with directional filters

INTRODUCTION

We aim to apply deep learning to achieve fully automated detection and classification of the Cervical Vertebrae Maturation (CVM) stages. We propose an innovative custom-designed deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a built-in set of novel directional filters that highlight the edges of the Cervical Vertebrae in X-ray images.

METHODS

A total of 1018 Cephalometric radiographs were labeled and classified according to the Cervical Vertebrae Maturation (CVM) stages. The images were cropped to extract the cervical vertebrae using an Aggregate Channel Features (ACF) object detector. The resulting images were used to train four different Deep Learning (DL) models: our proposed CNN, MobileNetV2, ResNet101, and Xception, together with a set of tunable directional edge enhancers. When using MobileNetV2, ResNet101 and Xception, data augmentation is adopted to allow adequate network complexity while avoiding overfitting. The performance of our CNN model was compared with that of MobileNetV2, ResNet101 and Xception with and without the use of directional filters. For validation and performance assessment, k-fold cross-validation, ROC curves, and p-values were used.

RESULTS

The proposed innovative model that uses a CNN preceded with a layer of tunable directional filters achieved a validation accuracy of 84.63%84.63% in CVM stage classification into five classes, exceeding the accuracy achieved with the other DL models investigated. MobileNetV2, ResNet101 and Xception used with directional filters attained accuracies of 78.54%, 74.10%, and 80.86%, respectively. The custom-designed CNN method also achieves 75.11% in six-class CVM stage classification. The effectiveness of the directional filters is reflected in the improved performance attained in the results. If the custom-designed CNN is used without the directional filters, the test accuracy decreases to 80.75%. In the Xception model without the directional filters, the testing accuracy drops slightly to 79.42% in the five-class CVM stage classification.

CONCLUSION

The proposed model of a custom-designed CNN together with the tunable Directional Filters (CNNDF) is observed to provide higher accuracy than the commonly used pre-trained network models that we investigated in the fully automated determination of the CVM stages.

Content based medical image retrieval based on new efficient local neighborhood wavelet feature descriptor

This paper presents a new class of local neighborhood based wavelet feature descriptor (LNWFD) for content based medical image retrieval (CBMIR). To retrieve images effectively from large medical databases is backbone of diagnosis. Existing wavelet transform based medical image retrieval methods suffer from high length feature vector with confined retrieval performance. Triplet half-band filter bank (THFB) enhanced the properties of wavelet filters using three kernels. The influence of THFB has employed in the proposed method. First, triplet half-band filter bank (THFB) is used for single level wavelet decomposition to obtain four sub-bands. Next, the relationship among wavelet coefficients is exploited at each sub-band using 3 × 3 neighborhood window to form LNWFD pattern. The novelty of the proposed descriptor lies in exploring relation between wavelet transform values of pixels rather than intensity values which gives more detail local information in wavelet sub-bands. Thus, proposed feature descriptor is robust against illumination. Manhattan distance is used to compute similarity between query feature vector and feature vector of database. The proposed method is tested for medical image retrieval using OASIS-MRI, NEMA-CT, and Emphysema-CT databases. The average retrieval precisions achieved are 71.45%, 99.51% of OASIS-MRI and NEMA-CT databases for top ten matches considered respectively and 55.51% of Emphysema-CT database for top 50 matches. The superiority in terms of performance of the proposed method is confirmed by the experimental results over the well-known existing descriptors.

A novel automated diagnostic system for classification of myocardial infarction ECG signals using an optimal biorthogonal filter bank

Myocardial infarction (MI), also referred to as heart attack, occurs when there is an interruption of blood flow to parts of the heart, due to the acute rupture of atherosclerotic plaque, which leads to damage of heart muscle. The heart muscle damage produces changes in the recorded surface electrocardiogram (ECG). The identification of MI by visual inspection of the ECG requires expert interpretation, and is difficult as the ECG signal changes associated with MI can be short in duration and low in magnitude. Hence, errors in diagnosis can lead to delay the initiation of appropriate medical treatment. To lessen the burden on doctors, an automated ECG based system can be installed in hospitals to help identify MI changes on ECG. In the proposed study, we develop a single-channel single lead ECG based MI diagnostic system validated using noisy and clean datasets. The raw ECG signals are taken from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt database. We design a novel two-band optimal biorthogonal filter bank (FB) for analysis of the ECG signals. We present a method to design a novel class of two-band optimal biorthogonal FB in which not only the product filter but the analysis lowpass filter is also a halfband filter. The filter design problem has been composed as a constrained convex optimization problem in which the objective function is a convex combination of multiple quadratic functions and the regularity and perfect reconstruction conditions are imposed in the form linear equalities. ECG signals are decomposed into six subbands (SBs) using the newly designed wavelet FB. Following to this, discriminating features namely, fuzzy entropy (FE), signal-fractal-dimensions (SFD), and renyi entropy (RE) are computed from all the six SBs. The features are fed to the k-nearest neighbor (KNN). The proposed system yields an accuracy of 99.62% for the noisy dataset and an accuracy of 99.74% for the clean dataset, using 10-fold cross validation (CV) technique. Our MI identification system is robust and highly accurate. It can thus be installed in clinics for detecting MI.

Optimal design of FIR triplet halfband filter bank and application in image coding

This correspondence proposes an efficient semidefinite programming (SDP) method for the design of a class of linear phase finite impulse response triplet halfband filter banks whose filters have optimal frequency selectivity for a prescribed regularity order. The design problem is formulated as the minimization of the least square error subject to peak error constraints and regularity constraints. By using the linear matrix inequality characterization of the trigonometric semi-infinite constraints, it can then be exactly cast as a SDP problem with a small number of variables and, hence, can be solved efficiently. Several design examples of the triplet halfband filter bank are provided for illustration and comparison with previous works. Finally, the image coding performance of the filter bank is presented.

On two-channel filter banks with directional vanishing moments

The contourlet transform was proposed to address the limited directional resolution of the separable wavelet transform. One way to guarantee good approximation behavior is to let the directional filters in the contourlet filter bank have sharp frequency response. This requires filters with large support size. We seek to isolate the key filter property that ensures good approximation. In this direction, we propose filters with directional vanishing moments (DVM). These filters, we show, annihilate information along a given direction. We study two-channel filter banks with DVM filters. We provide conditions under which the design of DVM filter banks is possible. A complete characterization of the product filter is, thus, obtained. We propose a design framework that avoids 2-D factorization using the mapping technique. The filters designed, when used in the contourlet transform, exhibit nonlinear approximation comparable to the conventional filters while being shorter and, therefore, providing better visual quality with less ringing artifacts. Furthermore, experiments show that the proposed filters outperform the conventional ones in image approximation and denoising.

A new family of nonredundant transforms using hybrid wavelets and directional filter banks

We propose a new family of nonredundant geometrical image transforms that are based on wavelets and directional filter banks. We convert the wavelet basis functions in the finest scales to a flexible and rich set of directional basis elements by employing directional filter banks, where we form a nonredundant transform family, which exhibits both directional and nondirectional basis functions. We demonstrate the potential of the proposed transforms using nonlinear approximation. In addition, we employ the proposed family in two key image processing applications, image coding and denoising, and show its efficiency for these applications.
