Dual-Task Semantic Change Detection for Remote Sensing Images Using the Generative Change Field Module

With the advent of very-high-resolution remote sensing images, semantic change detection (SCD) based on deep learning has become a research hotspot in recent years. SCD aims to observe the change in the Earth’s land surface and plays a vital role in monitoring the ecological environment, land use and land cover. Existing research mainly focus on single-task semantic change detection; the problem they face is that existing methods are incapable of identifying which change type has occurred in each multi-temporal image. In addition, few methods use the binary change region to help train a deep SCD-based network. Hence, we propose a dual-task semantic change detection network (GCF-SCD-Net) by using the generative change field (GCF) module to locate and segment the change region; what is more, the proposed network is end-to-end trainable. In the meantime, because of the influence of the imbalance label, we propose a separable loss function to alleviate the over-fitting problem. Extensive experiments are conducted in this work to validate the performance of our method. Finally, our work achieves a 69.9% mIoU and 17.9 Sek on the SECOND dataset. Compared with traditional networks, GCF-SCD-Net achieves the best results and promising performances.

Universal Multimode Background Subtraction

In this paper, we present a complete change detection system named multimode background subtraction. The universal nature of system allows it to robustly handle multitude of challenges associated with video change detection, such as illumination changes, dynamic background, camera jitter, and moving camera. The system comprises multiple innovative mechanisms in background modeling, model update, pixel classification, and the use of multiple color spaces. The system first creates multiple background models of the scene followed by an initial foreground/background probability estimation for each pixel. Next, the image pixels are merged together to form mega-pixels, which are used to spatially denoise the initial probability estimates to generate binary masks for both RGB and YCbCr color spaces. The masks generated after processing these input images are then combined to separate foreground pixels from the background. Comprehensive evaluation of the proposed approach on publicly available test sequences from the CDnet and the ESI data sets shows superiority in the performance of our system over other state-of-the-art algorithms.

Improved content aware scene retargeting for retinitis pigmentosa patients

Background

In this paper we present a novel scene retargeting technique to reduce the visual scene while maintaining the size of the key features. The algorithm is scalable to implementation onto portable devices, and thus, has potential for augmented reality systems to provide visual support for those with tunnel vision. We therefore test the efficacy of our algorithm on shrinking the visual scene into the remaining field of view for those patients.

Methods

Simple spatial compression of visual scenes makes objects appear further away. We have therefore developed an algorithm which removes low importance information, maintaining the size of the significant features. Previous approaches in this field have included seam carving, which removes low importance seams from the scene, and shrinkability which dynamically shrinks the scene according to a generated importance map. The former method causes significant artifacts and the latter is inefficient. In this work we have developed a new algorithm, combining the best aspects of both these two previous methods. In particular, our approach is to generate a shrinkability importance map using as seam based approach. We then use it to dynamically shrink the scene in similar fashion to the shrinkability method. Importantly, we have implemented it so that it can be used in real time without prior knowledge of future frames.

Results

We have evaluated and compared our algorithm to the seam carving and image shrinkability approaches from a content preservation perspective and a compression quality perspective. Also our technique has been evaluated and tested on a trial included 20 participants with simulated tunnel vision. Results show the robustness of our method at reducing scenes up to 50% with minimal distortion. We also demonstrate efficacy in its use for those with simulated tunnel vision of 22 degrees of field of view or less.

Conclusions

Our approach allows us to perform content aware video resizing in real time using only information from previous frames to avoid jitter. Also our method has a great benefit over the ordinary resizing method and even over other image retargeting methods. We show that the benefit derived from this algorithm is significant to patients with fields of view 20° or less.

A context-sensitive technique robust to registration noise for change detection in VHR multispectral images

This paper presents an automatic context-sensitive technique robust to registration noise (RN) for change detection (CD) in multitemporal very high geometrical resolution (VHR) remote sensing images. Exploiting the properties of RN in VHR images, the proposed technique analyzes the distribution of the spectral change vectors (SCVs) computed according to the change vector analysis (CVA) in a quantized polar domain. The method studies the SCVs falling into each quantization cell at different resolution levels (scales) to automatically identify the effects of RN in the polar domain. This information is jointly exploited with the spatial context information contained in the neighborhood of each pixel for generating the final CD map. The spatial context information is modeled through the definition of adaptive regions homogeneous both in spatial and temporal domain (parcels). Experimental results obtained on real VHR remote sensing multitemporal images confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

A Hopfield Neural Network for Image Change Detection

This paper outlines an optimization relaxation approach based on the analog Hopfield neural network (HNN) for solving the image change detection problem between two images. A difference image is obtained by subtracting pixel by pixel both images. The network topology is built so that each pixel in the difference image is a node in the network. Each node is characterized by its state, which determines if a pixel has changed. An energy function is derived, so that the network converges to stable states. The analog Hopfield's model allows each node to take on analog state values. Unlike most widely used approaches, where binary labels (changed/unchanged) are assigned to each pixel, the analog property provides the strength of the change. The main contribution of this paper is reflected in the customization of the analog Hopfield neural network to derive an automatic image change detection approach. When a pixel is being processed, some existing image change detection procedures consider only interpixel relations on its neighborhood. The main drawback of such approaches is the labeling of this pixel as changed or unchanged according to the information supplied by its neighbors, where its own information is ignored. The Hopfield model overcomes this drawback and for each pixel allows a tradeoff between the influence of its neighborhood and its own criterion. This is mapped under the energy function to be minimized. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated by comparative analysis against some existing image change detection methods.

Robust human detection within a highly dynamic aquatic environment in real time

This paper presents a real-time foreground detection method for monitoring swimming activities at an outdoor swimming pool. Robust performance and high accuracy of detecting objects-of-interest are two central issues of concern. Therefore, in this paper, a considerable amount of attention has been placed on the following aspects: 1) to establish a better method of modeling aquatic background, which exhibitis dynamic characteristics with random spatial movements, and 2) to establish a method of enhancing the visibility of the foreground by removing specular reflection at nighttime. First, the development of a new background modeling method is reported. In the proposed approach, the background is modeled as a composition of homogeneous blob movements. With an implementation of a spatial searching process, the proposed method shows capability in associating and distinguishing movements caused by the background. Hence, this contributes to better performance in foreground detection. On the issue of enhancing the visibility of the foreground, a decision-based filtering scheme is proposed as a preprocessing step. A defined concept term, fluctuation measure, is defined for classifying each pixel to be one of the predefined types. This has allowed suitable spatial or spatiotemporal filters to be applied accordingly for color the compensation step. All of these developments are evaluated by testing live on a busy Olympic-size outdoor public swimming pool. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations are reported. This provides a comprehensive study of the system.

Image change detection algorithms: a systematic survey

Detecting regions of change in multiple images of the same scene taken at different times is of widespread interest due to a large number of applications in diverse disciplines, including remote sensing, surveillance, medical diagnosis and treatment, civil infrastructure, and underwater sensing. This paper presents a systematic survey of the common processing steps and core decision rules in modern change detection algorithms, including significance and hypothesis testing, predictive models, the shading model, and background modeling. We also discuss important preprocessing methods, approaches to enforcing the consistency of the change mask, and principles for evaluating and comparing the performance of change detection algorithms. It is hoped that our classification of algorithms into a relatively small number of categories will provide useful guidance to the algorithm designer.

Statistical modeling of complex backgrounds for foreground object detection

This paper addresses the problem of background modeling for foreground object detection in complex environments. A Bayesian framework that incorporates spectral, spatial, and temporal features to characterize the background appearance is proposed. Under this framework, the background is represented by the most significant and frequent features, i.e., the principal features, at each pixel. A Bayes decision rule is derived for background and foreground classification based on the statistics of principal features. Principal feature representation for both the static and dynamic background pixels is investigated. A novel learning method is proposed to adapt to both gradual and sudden "once-off" background changes. The convergence of the learning process is analyzed and a formula to select a proper learning rate is derived. Under the proposed framework, a novel algorithm for detecting foreground objects from complex environments is then established. It consists of change detection, change classification, foreground segmentation, and background maintenance. Experiments were conducted on image sequences containing targets of interest in a variety of environments, e.g., offices, public buildings, subway stations, campuses, parking lots, airports, and sidewalks. Good results of foreground detection were obtained. Quantitative evaluation and comparison with the existing method show that the proposed method provides much improved results.

An adaptive semiparametric and context-based approach to unsupervised change detection in multitemporal remote-sensing images

In this paper, a novel automatic approach to the unsupervised identification of changes in multitemporal remote-sensing images is proposed. This approach, unlike classical ones, is based on the formulation of the unsupervised change-detection problem in terms of the Bayesian decision theory. In this context, an adaptive semiparametric technique for the unsupervised estimation of the statistical terms associated with the gray levels of changed and unchanged pixels in a difference image is presented. Such a technique exploits the effectivenesses of two theoretically well-founded estimation procedures: the reduced Parzen estimate (RPE) procedure and the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. Then, thanks to the resulting estimates and to a Markov random field (MRF) approach used to model the spatial-contextual information contained in the multitemporal images considered, a change detection map is generated. The adaptive semiparametric nature of the proposed technique allows its application to different kinds of remote-sensing images. Experimental results, obtained on two sets of multitemporal remote-sensing images acquired by two different sensors, confirm the validity of the proposed approach.

Integrating intensity and texture differences for robust change detection

We propose a novel technique for robust change detection based upon the integration of intensity and texture differences between two frames. A new accurate texture difference measure based on the relations between gradient vectors is proposed. The mathematical analysis shows that the measure is robust with respect to noise and illumination changes. Two ways to integrate the intensity and texture differences have been developed. The first combines the two measures adaptively according to the weightage of texture evidence, while the second does it optimally with additional constraint of smoothness. The parameters of the algorithm are selected automatically based on a statistic analysis. An algorithm is developed for fast implementation. The computational complexity analysis indicates that the proposed technique can run in real-time. The experiment results are evaluated both visually and quantitatively. They show that by exploiting both intensity and texture differences for change detection, one can obtain much better segmentation results than using the intensity or structure difference alone.
