Intelligent Intrusion Detection System Against Various Attacks Based on a Hybrid Deep Learning Algorithm

The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a crucial element in everyday life. The IoT environment is currently facing significant security concerns due to the numerous problems related to its architecture and supporting technology. In order to guarantee the complete security of the IoT, it is important to deal with these challenges. This study centers on employing deep learning methodologies to detect attacks. In general, this research aims to improve the performance of existing deep learning models. To mitigate data imbalances and enhance learning outcomes, the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) is employed. Our approach contributes to a multistage feature extraction process where autoencoders (AEs) are used initially to extract robust features from unstructured data on the model architecture's left side. Following this, long short-term memory (LSTM) networks on the right analyze these features to recognize temporal patterns indicative of abnormal behavior. The extracted and temporally refined features are inputted into convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for final classification. This structured arrangement harnesses the distinct capabilities of each model to process and classify IoT security data effectively. Our framework is specifically designed to address various attacks, including denial of service (DoS) and Mirai attacks, which are particularly harmful to IoT systems. Unlike conventional intrusion detection systems (IDSs) that may employ a singular model or simple feature extraction methods, our multistage approach provides more comprehensive analysis and utilization of data, enhancing detection capabilities and accuracy in identifying complex cyber threats in IoT environments. This research highlights the potential benefits that can be gained by applying deep learning methods to improve the effectiveness of IDSs in IoT security. The results obtained indicate a potential improvement for enhancing security measures and mitigating emerging threats.

An energy efficient deep learning model for intrusion detection in smart healthcare with optimal feature selection mechanism

In healthcare (HC), Internet of Things (IoT) integrated cloud computing provides various features and real-time applications. However, owing to the nature of IoT architecture, their types, various modes of communication and the density of data transformed in the network, security is currently a critical issue in the IoT healthcare (IoT-HC) field. This paper proposes a deep learning (DL) model, namely Adaptive Swish-based Deep Multi-Layer Perceptron (ASDMLP) that identifies the intrusions or attacks in the IoT healthcare (IoT-HC) platform. The proposed model starts by clustering the patients’ sensor devices in the network using the Probability-based Fuzzy C-Means (PFCM) model. After clustering the devices, the cluster heads (CHs) among the cluster members are selected based on the energy, distance and degree of the sensor devices for aggregating the data sensed by the medical sensor devices. The base station (BS) sends the patient’s data collected by the CHs to the cloud server (CS). At the cloud end, the proposed model implements an IDS by applying training of the DL model in publicly available databases. The DL approach first performs preprocessing of the data and then selects optimal features from the dataset using the Opposition and Greedy Levy mutation-based Coyotes Optimization Algorithm (OGCOA). The ASDMLP trains these optimal features for the detection of HC data intrusions. The outcomes confirm that the proposed approach works well on real-time IoT datasets for intrusion detection (ID) without compromising the energy consumption (EC) and lifespan of the network.

Incremental learning for detection in X-ray luggage perspective images

Convolutional neural networks have achieved remarkable results in the detection of X-ray luggage contraband. However, with an increase in contraband classes and substantial artificial transformation, the offline network training method has been unable to accurately detect the rapidly growing new classes of contraband. The current model cannot incrementally learn the newly appearing classes in real time without retraining the model. When the quantity of different types of contraband is not evenly distributed in the real-time detection process, the convolution neural network that is optimized by the gradient descent method will produce catastrophic forgetting, which means learning new knowledge and forgetting old knowledge, and the detection effect on the old classes will suddenly decline. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes an incremental learning method for online continuous learning of models and incrementally learns and detects new classes in the absence of old classes in the new classes. First, we perform parameter compression on the original network by distillation to ensure stable identification of the old classes. Second, the area proposal subnetwork and object detection subnetwork are incrementally learned to obtain the recognition ability of the new classes. In addition, this paper designs a new loss function, which causes the network to avoid catastrophic forgetting and stably detect the object of the new contraband classes. To reliably verify the model, this paper produces a multi-angle dataset for security perspective images. A total of 10 classes of contraband are tested, and the interference between two object detections is analyzed by model parameters. The experimental results show that the model can stably perform new contraband object learning even when there is an uneven distribution of data types.
