Remote Heart Rate Measurement from RGB-NIR Video Based on Spatial and Spectral Face Patch Selection

Radar-based contactless heart beat detection with a modified Pan-Tompkins algorithm

Background.Using radar for non-contact measuring human vital signs has garnered significant attention due to its undeniable benefits. However, achieving reasonably good accuracy in contactless measurement senarios is still a technical challenge.Materials and methods.The proposed method includes two stages. The first stage involves the process of datasegmentation and signal channel selection. In the next phase, the raw radar signal from the chosen channel is subjected to modified Pan-Tompkins.Results.The experimental findings from twelve individuals demonstrated a strong agreement between the contactless radar and contact electrocardiography (ECG) devices for heart rate measurement, with correlation coefficient of 98.74 percentage; and the 95% limits of agreement obtained by radar and those obtained by ECG were 2.4 beats per minute.Conclusion.The results showed high agreement between heart rate calculated by radar signals and heart rate by electrocardiograph. This research paves the way for future applications using non-contact sensors to support and potentially replace contact sensors in healthcare.

Heart Rate Estimation from Facial Image Sequences of a Dual-Modality RGB-NIR Camera

This paper presents an RGB-NIR (Near Infrared) dual-modality technique to analyze the remote photoplethysmogram (rPPG) signal and hence estimate the heart rate (in beats per minute), from a facial image sequence. Our main innovative contribution is the introduction of several denoising techniques such as Modified Amplitude Selective Filtering (MASF), Wavelet Decomposition (WD), and Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA), which take advantage of RGB and NIR band characteristics to uncover the rPPG signals effectively through this Independent Component Analysis (ICA)-based algorithm. Two datasets, of which one is the public PURE dataset and the other is the CCUHR dataset built with a popular Intel RealSense D435 RGB-D camera, are adopted in our experiments. Facial video sequences in the two datasets are diverse in nature with normal brightness, under-illumination (i.e., dark), and facial motion. Experimental results show that the proposed method has reached competitive accuracies among the state-of-the-art methods even at a shorter video length. For example, our method achieves MAE = 4.45 bpm (beats per minute) and RMSE = 6.18 bpm for RGB-NIR videos of 10 and 20 s in the CCUHR dataset and MAE = 3.24 bpm and RMSE = 4.1 bpm for RGB videos of 60-s in the PURE dataset. Our system has the advantages of accessible and affordable hardware, simple and fast computations, and wide realistic applications.

Non-Contact Heart Rate Estimation via Adaptive RGB/NIR Signal Fusion

We propose a non-contact heart rate (HR) estimation method that is robust to various situations, such as bright, low-light, and varying illumination scenes. We utilize a camera that records red, green, and blue (RGB) and near-infrared (NIR) information to capture the subtle skin color changes induced by the cardiac pulse of a person. The key novelty of our method is the adaptive fusion of RGB and NIR signals for HR estimation based on the analysis of background illumination variations. RGB signals are suitable indicators for HR estimation in bright scenes. Conversely, NIR signals are more reliable than RGB signals in scenes with more complex illumination, as they can be captured independently of the changes in background illumination. By measuring the correlations between the lights reflected from the background and facial regions, we adaptively utilize RGB and NIR observations for HR estimation. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Remote Heart Rate Estimation Based on 3D Facial Landmarks

In this paper, we propose a novel video-based remote heart rate (HR) estimation method based on 3D facial landmarks. The key contributions in our method are twofold: (i) We introduce 3D facial landmarks detection to the video-based HR estimation and (ii) we propose a novel face patch visibility check manner based on the face patch normal in the 3D space. We experimentally demonstrate that, compared with baseline methods using 2D facial landmarks, our proposed method using 3D facial landmarks improves the robustness of HR estimation to head rotations and partial face occlusion. We also demonstrate that our visibility check is effective for selecting sufficiently visible face patches, contributing to the improvement of HR estimation accuracy.

Inter-Beat Interval Estimation from Facial Video Based on Reliability of BVP Signals

Inter-beat interval (IBI) and heart rate variability (HRV) are important cardiac parameters that provide physiological and emotional states of a person. In this paper, we present a framework for accurate IBI and HRV estimation from a facial video based on the reliability of extracted blood volume pulse (BVP) signals. Our framework first extracts candidate BVP signals from randomly sampled multiple face patches. The BVP signals are then assessed based on a reliability metric to select the most reliable BVP signal, from which IBI and HRV are calculated. In experiments, we evaluate three reliability metrics and demonstrate that our framework can estimate IBI and HRV more accurately than a conventional single face region-based framework.
