Stretching the Limits of MRI-Stretchable and Modular Coil Array Using Conductive Thread Technology

Objective

We propose a modular stretchable coil design using conductive threads and commercially available embroidery machines. The coil design increases customizability of coil arrays for individual patients and each body part.

Methods

Eight rectangular coils were constructed with custom-fabricated stretchable tinsel copper threads incorporated onto textile. Tune, match, and detune circuits were incorporated on the coil. A hook-and-loop mechanism was used to attach and decouple the modular coils. Phantom and in vivo scans at various anatomical flexion angles were acquired to highlight performance, and a temperature test was performed to verify safety.

Results

In vivo MRI experiments demonstrate high sensitivity and coverage of each anatomy. As the coils are stretched, the sensitive volume increases at a rate of 10.93 mL/cm2. The SNR reduction of a single coil was greater during compression than when stretched, but this did not affect image quality for the array. The modularity of the array allows for adaptability for any anatomy with simple on-demand adjustment to the number and position of coil elements.

Conclusion

The images demonstrated high sensitivity and coverage of the stretchable array for various anatomies and flexion angles. Stretching the coils increases the sensitive volume, allowing for a larger region to be effectively imaged. The resonance shift and SNR decrease during stretch and compression support further investigation of methods to reduce frequency shift in stretchable coils.

Significance

The proposed array design allows for highly stretchable, flexible, modular, and conformal patient-centered coils that allow for increased imaging quality, greater comfort, and rapid production.

Miniature and flexible Bazooka balun for high-field MRI

Flexible coils offer improved patient comfort and better imaging quality. However, rigid and bulky baluns in RF coils limit flexibility and manufacturing. A miniaturized and flexible balun design was proposed to address this issue. It replaced rigid components with an ultra-flexible rubber tube and a flexible coaxial capacitor. Simulations validated the concept, and bench tests confirmed its performance, including a measured common-mode rejection ratio of -15.8 dB. The flexible balun was integrated into a 4-channel coil array, evaluating impedance changes caused by the "hand effect." Compared to coils without the balun, the flexible coil with the proposed balun showed improved robustness in impedance matching and inter-element couplings. Transmit efficiency of the flexible coil with the balun was compared to coils without a balun and with a rigid, shielded cable trap. Results demonstrated that the proposed balun circuit maintained high transmit efficiency. Overall, the flexible balun design offers a promising solution for improving the flexibility and performance of RF coil arrays in MRI applications.

Parametric Design of a 3D-Printed Removable Common-Mode Trap for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Radiofrequency coils are utilized during transmit and receive of MRI signals. Cable traps remove common-mode current from the coaxial cable shield, which helps improve the image quality and reduces risks of burns to the patient. Traditional cable traps use wounded coaxial cables that limit the flexibility in the design process. Floating cable traps were introduced which eliminated any physical connection between the trap and coaxial cable, allowing complete flexibility in design and placement. However, the design process of floating cable traps is iterative and may take several rounds of 3D modeling. This work seeks to optimize the design process through the use of parametric design methodologies. The proposed methodology allows for 3D printing the floating cable trap after inputting the design parameters. The cable trap was able to attenuate currents in the coaxial shields to -48 dB, highlighting its performance and design robustness.

Caterpillar traps: A highly flexible, distributed system of toroidal cable traps

PURPOSE

Coil arrays are connected to the main MRI system with long, shielded coaxial cables. RF coupling of these cables to the main transmit coil can cause high shield currents, which pose risks of heating and RF burns. High-blocking resonant RF traps are placed at distinct positions along cables to mitigate these currents. Traditional traps are designed to be stiff to avoid changes in their resonant frequency, hindering the overall system flexibility. Instead of using a few high-blocking traps, we propose the use of caterpillar traps-a distributed system of small, elastic traps that cover the full length of cables.

METHODS

We leverage an array of resonant toroids as traps, forming a caterpillar-like structure whereby bending only impacts individual traps minimally. Benchtop measurements are used to determine the blocking of caterpillar traps and show their robustness to bending. We also compare an anterior array system cable covered with caterpillar traps to a commercial cable with B1 + and heating measurements.

RESULTS

Benchtop experiments with caterpillar traps demonstrate high robustness to bending. B1 + mapping experiments of an anterior array cable show improved blocking and flexibility compared to a commercial cable.

CONCLUSION

Caterpillar traps provide sufficient attenuation to shield currents while allowing cable flexibility. Our distributed design can provide high blocking efficiency at different positions and orientations, even in cases where commercial cable traps cannot.

Dual-Tuned Lattice Balun for Multi-Nuclear MRI and MRS

Balun or trap circuits are critical components for suppressing common-mode currents flowing on the outer conductors of coaxial cables in RF coil systems for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS). Common-mode currents affect coils' tuning and matching, induce losses, pick up extra noise from the surrounding environment, lead to undesired cross-talk, and cause safety concerns in animal and human imaging. First proposed for microwave antenna applications, the Lattice balun has been widely used in MRI coils. It has a small footprint and can be easily integrated with coil tuning/matching circuits. However, the Lattice balun is typically a single-tuned circuit and cannot be used for multi-nuclear MRI and MRS with two RF frequencies. This work describes a dual-tuned Lattice balun design that is suitable for multi-nuclear MRI/MRS. It was first analyzed theoretically to derive component values. RF circuit simulations were then performed to validate the theoretical analysis and provide guidance for practical construction. Based on the simulation results, a dual-tuned balun circuit was built for 7T ¹H/²³Na MRI and bench tested. The fabricated dual-tuned balun exhibits superior performance at the Larmor frequencies of both ¹H and ²³Na, with less than 0.15 dB insertion loss and better than 17 dB common-mode rejection ratio at both frequencies.
