An MR-Safe Pneumatic Stepper Motor: Design, Control, and Characterization

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide high contrast soft tissue visualization without ionizing radiation, which makes it an attractive imaging modality for interventional procedures. However, the strong magnetic and radio frequency (RF) fields impose significant challenges to the development of robotic systems within the magnetic resonance environment. Consequently, designing MRI-compatible actuators is crucial for advancing MRI-guided robotic systems. This paper reports the design, control, and characterization of a gear-based pneumatic stepper motor. The motor is designed with three actuating piston units and a geared rotor. The three actuating pistons are driven sequentially by compressed air to push the geared rotor and to generate bidirectional stepwise motion. Experiments were conducted to characterize the motor in terms of torque, speed, control, and MRI compatibility. The results demonstrate that the motor can deliver a maximum continuous torque of 1300 mNm at 80 pounds per square inch (PSI) (0.55 MPa) with 9 m air hoses. The closed-loop control evaluation demonstrates the steady-state error of position tracking was 0.81±0.52 deg. The MRI compatibility study indicated negligible image quality degradation. Therefore, the proposed pneumatic stepper motor can effectively serve as an actuator for MRI-guided robotic applications.

Model-Based Design of Variable Stiffness Soft Gripper Actuated by Smart Hydrogels

Soft grippers have shown their ability to grasp fragile and irregularly shaped objects, but they often require external mechanisms for actuation, limiting their use in large-scale situations. Their limited capacity to handle loads and deformations also restricts their customized grasping capabilities. To address these issues, a model-based soft gripper with adaptable stiffness was proposed. The proposed actuator comprises a silicone chamber with separate units containing hydrogel spheres. These spheres exhibit temperature-triggered swelling and shrinking behaviors. In addition, variable stiffness strips embedded in the units are introduced as the stiffness variation method. The validated finite element method model was used as the model-based design approach to describe the hydrogel behaviors and explore the affected factors on the bending performance. The results demonstrate that the actuator can be programmed to respond in a desired way, and the stiffness variation method enhances bending stiffness significantly. Specifically, a direct correlation exists between the bending angle and hydrogel sphere layers, with a maximum of 128° achieved. In addition, incorporating gap configurations into the chamber membrane results in a maximum threefold increase in the bending angle. Besides, the membrane type minimally impacts the bending angle from 21.3° to 24.6°. In addition, the embedded variable stiffness strips substantially increase stiffness, resulting in a 30-fold rise in bending stiffness. In conclusion, the novel soft gripper actuator enables substantial bending and stiffness control through active actuation, showcasing the potential for enhancing soft gripper performance in complex and multiscale grasping scenarios.

Fully-Printable Soft Actuator with Variable Stiffness by Phase Transition and Hydraulic Regulations

Actuators with variable stiffness have vast potential in the field of compliant robotics. Morphological shape changes in the actuators are possible, while they retain their structural strength. They can shift between a rigid load-carrying state and a soft flexible state in a short transition period. This work presents a hydraulically actuated soft actuator fabricated by a fully 3D printing of shape memory polymer (SMP). The actuator shows a stiffness of 519 mN/mm at 20 ∘C and 45 mN/mm at 50 ∘C at the same pressure (0.2 MPa). This actuator demonstrates a high stiffness variation of 474 mN/mm (10 times the baseline stiffness) for a temperature change of 30 ∘C and a large variation (≈1150%) in average stiffness. A combined variation of both temperature (20–50 ∘C) and pressure (0–0.2 MPa) displays a stiffness variation of 501 mN/mm. The pressure variation (0–0.2 MPa) in the actuator also shows a large variation in the output force (1.46 N) at 50 ∘C compared to the output force variation (0.16 N) at 20 ∘C. The pressure variation is further utilized for bending the actuator. Varying the pressure (0–0.2 MPa) at 20 ∘C displayed no bending in the actuator. In contrast, the same variation of pressure at 50 ∘C displayed a bending angle of 80∘. A combined variation of both temperature (20–50 ∘C) and pressure (0–0.2 MPa) shows the ability to bend 80∘. At the same time, an additional weight (300 g) suspended to the actuator could increase its bending capability to 160∘. We demonstrated a soft robotic gripper varying its stiffness to carry various objects.

In this study, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and graphite powder—a solid lubricant—were filled and characterized for friction and wear responses. The fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique was utilized to synthesize ABS–graphite composites. A twin-screw extrusion approach was employed to create the composite filament of graphite–ABS that is suitable for the FDM process. Three graphite particle ratios ranging from 0% to 5% were explored in the ABS matrix. The wear and friction properties of ABS composites were examined using a pin on disc tribometer at varied sliding velocities and weights. As a result of the graphite addition in the ABS matrix, weight losses for FDM components as well as a decreased coefficient of friction were demonstrated. Furthermore, as the graphite weight percentage in the ABS matrix grows the value of friction and wear loss decreases. The wear mechanisms in graphite filled ABS composites and ABS were extensively examined using scanning electron microscopy and confocal microscopy.
