An improved scheme for Flip-OFDM based on Hartley transform in short-range IM/DD systems

In this paper, an improved Flip-OFDM scheme is proposed for IM/DD optical systems, where the modulation/demodulation processing takes advantage of the fast Hartley transform (FHT) algorithm. We realize the improved scheme in one symbol period while conventional Flip-OFDM scheme based on fast Fourier transform (FFT) in two consecutive symbol periods. So the complexity of many operations in improved scheme is half of that in conventional scheme, such as CP operation, polarity inversion and symbol delay. Compared to FFT with complex input constellation, the complexity of FHT with real input constellation is halved. The transmission experiment over 50-km SSMF has been realized to verify the feasibility of improved scheme. In conclusion, the improved scheme has the same BER performance with conventional scheme, but great superiority on complexity.

Experimental demonstration of a cost-effective bit rate variable IM/DD optical OFDM with reduced guard band

We experimentally demonstrate an intensity modulated and direct detection optical OFDM with variable bit rate from 5 Gb/s to 9 Gb/s using BPSK format. A fast processing based on the Hartley transform is performed with low complexity DSP, achieving the same performance as 4QAM FFT-based processing. Using the same bandwidth occupancy as required for 5 Gb/s, the bit rate can be increased up to 80% and transmitted over 25 km SSMF, by reducing the guard band and adopting an optimized transceiver design with additional overhead, including half-length training symbols and cyclic extension.

Blind location and separation of callers in a natural chorus using a microphone array

Male frogs and toads call in dense choruses to attract females. Determining the vocal interactions and spatial distribution of the callers is important for understanding acoustic communication in such assemblies. It has so far proved difficult to simultaneously locate and recover the vocalizations of individual callers. Here a microphone-array technique is developed for blindly locating callers using arrival-time delays at the microphones, estimating their steering-vectors, and recovering the calls with a frequency-domain adaptive beamformer. The technique exploits the time-frequency sparseness of the signal space to recover sources even when there are more sources than sensors. The method is tested with data collected from a natural chorus of Gulf Coast toads (Bufo valliceps) and Northern cricket frogs (Acris crepitans). A spatial map of locations accurate to within a few centimeters is constructed, and the individual call waveforms are recovered for nine individual animals within a 9 x 9 m(2). These methods work well in low reverberation when there are no reflectors other than the ground. They will require modifications to incorporate multi-path propagation, particularly for the estimation of time-delays.

Multichannel transforms for signal/image processing

This paper presents a novel approach to the Fourier analysis of multichannel time series. Orthogonal matrix functions are introduced and are used in the definition of multichannel Fourier series of continuous-time periodic multichannel functions. Orthogonal transforms are proposed for discrete-time multichannel signals as well. It is proven that the orthogonal matrix functions are related to unitary transforms (e.g., discrete Hartley transform (DHT), Walsh-Hadamard transform), which are used for single-channel signal transformations. The discrete-time one-dimensional multichannel transforms proposed in this paper are related to two-dimensional single-channel transforms, notably to the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and to the DHT. Therefore, fast algorithms for their computation can be easily constructed. Simulations on the use of discrete multichannel transforms on color image compression have also been performed.
