Lateralization of dichotic speech stimuli is based on specific auditory pathway interactions: neuromagnetic evidence

Dichotic listening (DL) is a neuropsychological technique for the study of functional laterality. Based on behavioral patient studies, the "structural theory" states that lateralization of the auditory input during DL is allowed by an inhibition of the ipsilateral pathways. We aimed here at extending this theory to provide a neurophysiological basis of verbal DL. We investigated the magnetic responses of the primary auditory cortices elicited by dichotic consonant-vowel syllables. Dichotic stimuli consisted of 2 syllables pairs, a "competing" one composed by syllables with high spectral overlap (/da/ and /ba/) and a "noncompeting" pair (/da/ and /ka/). One of the syllables in each pair was delivered at 2 intensities, whereas the other did not change. A reduced increase of source intensity in response to dichotic pairs at the 2 levels was assumed to indicate pathway inhibition effects. We obtained that the left ipsilateral pathway (i.e., the left ipsilateral signal) was strongly inhibited by the right contralateral one. Conversely, the right ipsilateral pathway did not show an inhibition larger than the left contralateral one. These results extend the notion of auditory functional asymmetries by showing that beyond hemispheric functional specialization there is an asymmetry within the ascending auditory system, which is based on a competition mechanism. The larger the competition between the left and right ear stimuli, the larger are the inhibition effects, which determine the pathway asymmetry. These findings represent as well a neurophysiological basis for the "structural theory" explaining the right ear preference usually found in verbal DL tasks.

Decrease of functional coupling between left and right auditory cortices during dichotic listening: An electroencephalography study

The present study focused on functional coupling between human bilateral auditory cortices and on possible influence of right over left auditory cortex during dichotic listening of complex non-verbal tones having near (competing) compared with distant non-competing fundamental frequencies. It was hypothesized that dichotic stimulation with competing tones would induce a decline of functional coupling between the two auditory cortices, as revealed by a decrease of electroencephalography coherence and an increase of directed transfer function from right (specialized for the present stimulus material) to left auditory cortex. Electroencephalograph was recorded from T3 and T4 scalp sites, overlying respectively left and right auditory cortices, and from Cz scalp site (vertex) for control purposes. Event-related coherence between T3 and T4 scalp sites was significantly lower for all electroencephalography bands of interest during dichotic listening of competing than non-competing tone pairs. This was a specific effect, since event-related coherence did not differ in a monotic control condition. Furthermore, event-related coherence between T3 and Cz and between T4 and Cz scalp sites showed no significant effects. Conversely, the directed transfer function results showed negligible influence at group level of right over left auditory cortex during dichotic listening. These results suggest a decrease of functional coupling between bilateral auditory cortices during competing dichotic stimuli as a possible neural substrate for the lateralization of auditory stimuli during dichotic listening.

Inhibition of auditory cortical responses to ipsilateral stimuli during dichotic listening: evidence from magnetoencephalography

The present magnetoencephalography (MEG) study on auditory evoked magnetic fields (AEFs) was aimed at verifying whether during dichotic listening the contralateral auditory pathway inhibits the ipsilateral one, as suggested by behavioural and patient studies. Ten healthy subjects were given a randomized series of three complex tones (261, 293 and 391 Hz, 500 ms duration), which were delivered monotically and dichotically with different intensities [60, 70 or 80 dBA (audio decibels)]. MEG data were recorded from the right auditory cortex. Results showed that the M100 amplitude over the right auditory cortex increased progressively when tones of increasing intensity were provided at the ipsilateral (right) ear. This effect on M100 was abolished when a concurrent tone of constant intensity was delivered dichotically at the contralateral (left) ear, suggesting that the contralateral pathway inhibited the ipsilateral one. The ipsilateral inhibition was present only when the contralateral tone fundamental frequency was similar to the ipsilateral tone. It was proposed that the occlusion mechanism would be exerted in cortical auditory areas as the dichotic effects were observed at M100 but not M50 component. This is the first evidence showing a neurophysiological inhibition driven by the contralateral auditory pathway over the ipsilateral one during dichotic listening.

Neuromagnetic evaluation of cortical auditory function in patients with temporal lobe tumors

The N100m wave response of the auditory evoked magnetic field originates in the posterior part of the bilateral superior temporal planes for either contra- or ipsilateral ear stimulus. Cortical auditory function was evaluated in 14 patients with temporal lobe tumors using a magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-linked whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) system. Before surgery, seven patients had normal N100m latency (within the range of the mean +/- 2 standard deviations of 37 normal volunteers) in both normal hemispheres and in those with lesions, and MR imaging indicated no tumor invasion or edema in the posterior one-third of the superior temporal planes, even when the sylvian fissure was shifted upward due to the mass effect. Seven patients had prolonged N100m latency or absence of N100m in the hemisphere containing the lesion, and the posterior portion of the superior temporal plane was involved by the tumor or perifocal edema. Prolonged N100m latency recovered to the normal range after removal of tumors in two of four patients investigated postoperatively. The MEG system can be used to evaluate cortical auditory function noninvasively before and after surgical treatment of temporal lobe tumors.

Corpus callosum morphometry and dichotic listening performance: individual differences in functional interhemispheric inhibition?

We examined the relationship between midsagittal corpus callosum area, as seen by magnetic resonance imaging, and behavioral laterality effects from a dichotic listening task requiring cross-callosal relay of an auditory signal, in 60 healthy young adults. Four patients with complete forebrain commissurotomy were also given the dichotic listening task, confirming that in this task, the report of left ear items is dependent on callosal pathways. Contrary to our predictions, callosum measures were unrelated to either a laterality measure or to inferior (typically left) ear performance. Surprisingly, superior (typically right) ear accuracies, which do not depend on cross-callosal sensory transfer, were significantly and negatively correlated with callosum size. These findings show that normal variations in callosum size do not appear to contribute significantly to individual differences in hemispheric specialization. Callosum size may, instead, be associated with degree of functional interhemispheric inhibition.

An ear asymmetry for gap detection following anterior temporal lobectomy

A threshold elevation in the performance of auditory temporal order judgment in man has been reported in the ear contralateral to the side of an anterior temporal lobectomy. On the basis of temporal order judgments alone it is not possible to determine whether the deficit is attributable to an impairment of recognition, identification, or temporal resolution. The present monaural experiments compared the performance of the two ears in the detection of a gap in a broad-band noise burst in normal and temporal lobectomized subjects. The results revealed a right-left symmetry in gap detection performance by normal subjects but a significant deficit in gap detection in the ear contralateral to the side of an anterior temporal lobectomy--a finding interpreted as revealing the existence of a bonafide deficit in auditory temporal resolution induced by such resection.

Contralateral interference and ear advantages for identification of three-element patterns

Recent experience with attempts to test relatively simple patterns such as three-tone sequences in a traditional dichotic-listening paradigm indicates that when such sequences are used for both target and contralateral interference, performance tends to be low in both ears and not useful for measuring or comparing ear advantages in various target conditions. It is reported that tests with a variety of sounds presented contralaterally to three-element patterns show that several such sounds can (1) allow performance in at least one ear to remain above floor values, (2) result in performance in at least one ear that is below ceiling, and (3) reveal ear advantages that are similar in direction and magnitude to those seen with the traditional dichotic paradigm.

Dichotic pairing of digits with tones: high performance level and lack of ear effect

Fifty-six subjects each listened to four types of dichotic input: digit-digit, tone-tone, digit (left ear)-tone (right ear), and tone (left ear)-digit (right ear). When digits were paired with tones, performance improved substantially over that with digit-digit and tone-tone input, and material-specific ear differences disappeared. The results indicate that both capacity limitation and an advantage of the contra-lateral over the ipsilateral input appear only when inputs from the two ears compete for the same kind of processing.

Effects of dichotically presented simulatneous synchronous and delayed auditory feedback on key tapping performance

A selective replication of Tsunoda's (1966) application of the DAF key tapping paradigm to the study of functional auditory asymmetry was conducted. Present findings do not offer confirmation of Tsunoda's assertion that most subjects will exhibit performance disruption at a lower intensity level when a vowel is delayed at the right ear and when a pure tone is delayed at the left ear. In the present study, it was found that no difference existed between the pure tone and the vowel delayed to the left ear conditions in terms of performance deterioration. The significant difference in performance disruption between the vowel delayed to the right ear condition and the pure tone delayed to the right ear condition was interpreted to be suggestive of functional auditory asymmetry.
