Design of a compacted-sized eye-tracking system with indexed gaze target for ring gantry linear accelerators: verification study using a motorized eye phantom

Background: Eye-tracking systems and gaze targets provide effective immobilization of the eye during ocular radiation therapy treatment. This study proposes a compact-sized eye-tracking system with a gaze target to provide a simple setup in a ring gantry LINAC. The device should have accurate repositioning, while the gaze target should be easily interchangeable.Methods: A compact-sized camera was mounted on a 3D-printed stand integrated with a gaze target. The gaze target can be fixed in different positions using an indexed-positioning system. The repositioning accuracy of this system was evaluated using Computed Tomography (CT) scans. The iris center position of the eye phantom was detected using fast radial symmetry transform. The iris center shift in the camera plane was converted to the 3D absolute displacement using the approximation of the spherical rotation of the eye globe. The tolerance of iris motion from gazing toward the gaze target in the camera plane can be estimated with prior knowledge of the iris center location when gazing toward the camera. The detection accuracy was evaluated on a motorized spherical eye phantom.Results: The mean repositioning errors of the camera and the gaze target were 0.18 mm (Range: 0.08-0.36 mm) and 0.31 mm (Range: 0.03-0.56 mm), respectively. For a typical distance of 200 mm from the camera to the tracked eye, the largest absolute error of iris center detection on a motorized spherical eye phantom was 0.08 mm, while the mean absolute error was less than the resolution of one pixel.Conclusions: This study proposed a compact-sized eye-tracking system with a gaze target with an easily reproducible setup. By converting the displacement of the motorized eye phantom iris center location in the camera plane to 3D coordinate displacement, accurate tolerance of the gaze direction of the eye can be achieved.

An Automatic Calibration Method for Kappa Angle Based on a Binocular Gaze Constraint

Kappa-angle calibration shows its importance in gaze tracking due to the special structure of the eyeball. In a 3D gaze-tracking system, after the optical axis of the eyeball is reconstructed, the kappa angle is needed to convert the optical axis of the eyeball to the real gaze direction. At present, most of the kappa-angle-calibration methods use explicit user calibration. Before eye-gaze tracking, the user needs to look at some pre-defined calibration points on the screen, thereby providing some corresponding optical and visual axes of the eyeball with which to calculate the kappa angle. Especially when multi-point user calibration is required, the calibration process is relatively complicated. In this paper, a method that can automatically calibrate the kappa angle during screen browsing is proposed. Based on the 3D corneal centers and optical axes of both eyes, the optimal objective function of the kappa angle is established according to the coplanar constraint of the visual axes of the left and right eyes, and the differential evolution algorithm is used to iterate through kappa angles according to the theoretical angular constraint of the kappa angle. The experiments show that the proposed method can make the gaze accuracy reach 1.3° in the horizontal plane and 1.34° in the vertical plane, both of which are within the acceptable margins of gaze-estimation error. The demonstration of explicit kappa-angle calibration is of great significance to the realization of the instant use of gaze-tracking systems.

Quality of life and treatment-related burden during ocular proton therapy: a prospective trial of 131 patients with uveal melanoma

BACKGROUND

Proton beam therapy is a well-established treatment option for patients with uveal melanoma (UM). The treatment procedure, in general, includes placing radiopaque clips to ensure exact eye-positioning during radiotherapy, followed by the delivery of proton irradiation. The short-term burden associated with proton therapy in patients with UM has rarely been addressed. In this prospective study, we investigated the physiological and psychological aspects of proton therapy that might affect the well-being of patients during the different stages of treatment.

METHODS

During the treatment procedure, we conducted longitudinal assessments of the Quality of life (QOL), organ-specific symptoms, and psychological aspects in patients with UM with three questionnaires (EORTC QLQ-C30, EORTC QLQ-OPT30, and GAD-7). Patients completed questionnaires before clip surgery (T0), before proton therapy (T1), after completing treatment (T2), and three months after treatment completion (T3). We also collected data on tumor characteristics and socio-demographics to identify potential risk factors associated with high treatment burdens.

RESULTS

We prospectively included 131 consecutive patients. Questionnaire data showed a significant, temporary decline in global QOL and an increase in eye-related symptoms, as a result of the clip surgery (T0-T1). After treatment completion (T2), global QOL improved gradually, and none of the eye-related symptoms significantly deteriorated over the course of proton therapy. The global QOL returned to baseline levels three months after treatment (T3). We identified baseline anxiety as an independent risk factor for experiencing an acute treatment-related burden. Furthermore, we found interactions between GAD7 and patient sex showing that anxiety had a more pronounced effect on QOL outcome in female patients.

CONCLUSION

The short-term treatment-related burden of ocular proton therapy appeared to be largely associated with the preceding clip surgery, rather than the irradiation procedure. We found that anxiety was strongly associated with experiencing QOL issues during the treatment procedure. Our findings could contribute to the development of future strategies for improving the treatment process and psycho-oncologic patient care.

Use of information modelling techniques to understand research trends in eye gaze estimation methods: An automated review

Eye gaze tracking has been used to study the influence of visual stimuli on consumer behavior and attentional processes. Eye gaze tracking techniques have made substantial contributions in advertisement design, human computer interaction, virtual reality and disease diagnosis. Eye gaze estimation is considered critical for prediction of human attention, and hence indispensable for better understanding human activities. In this paper, Latent Semantic Analysis is used to develop an information model for identifying emerging research trends within eye gaze estimation techniques. An exhaustive collection of 423 titles and abstracts of research papers published during 2005-2018 were used. Five major research areas and ten research trends were classified based upon this study.
