Detection of Small Aerial Object Using Random Projection Feature With Region Clustering

Rigid propagation of visual motion in the insect's neural system

In the pursuit of developing an efficient artificial visual system for visual motion detection, researchers find inspiration from the visual motion-sensitive neural pathways in the insect's neural system. Although multiple proposed neural computational models exhibit significant performance aligned with those observed from insects, the mathematical basis for how these models characterize the sensitivity of visual neurons to corresponding motion patterns remains to be elucidated. To fill this research gap, this study originally proposed that the rigid propagation of visual motion is an essential mathematical property of the models for the insect's visual neural system, meaning that the dynamics of the model output remain consistent with the visual motion dynamics reflected in the input. To verify this property, this study uses the small target motion detector (STMD) neural pathway - one of the visual motion-sensitive pathways in the insect's neural system - as an exemplar, rigorously demonstrating that the dynamics of translational visual motion are rigidly propagated through the encoding of retinal measurements in STMD computational models. Numerical experiment results further substantiate the proposed property of STMD models. This study offers a novel theoretical framework for exploring the nature of the visual motion perception underlying the insect's visual neural system and brings an innovative perspective to the broader research field of insect visual motion perception and artificial visual systems.

Multitargets Joint Training Lightweight Model for Object Detection of Substation

The object detection of the substation is the key to ensuring the safety and reliable operation of the substation. The traditional image detection algorithms use the corresponding texture features of single-class objects and would not handle other different class objects easily. The object detection algorithm based on deep networks has generalization, and its sizeable complex backbone limits the application in the substation monitoring terminals with weak computing power. This article proposes a multitargets joint training lightweight model. The proposed model uses the feature maps of the complex model and the labels of objects in images as training multitargets. The feature maps have deeper feature information, and the feature maps of complex networks have higher information entropy than lightweight networks have. This article proposes the heat pixels method to improve the adequate object information because of the imbalance of the proportion between the foreground and the background. The heat pixels method is designed as a kind of reverse network calculation and reflects the object's position to the pixels of the feature maps. The temperature of the pixels indicates the probability of the existence of the objects in the locations. Three different lightweight networks use the complex model feature maps and the traditional tags as the training multitargets. The public dataset VOC and the substation equipment dataset are adopted in the experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model can effectively improve object detection accuracy and reduce the time-consuming and calculation amount.

TSD-Truncated Structurally Aware Distance for Small Pest Object Detection

As deep learning has been successfully applied in various domains, it has recently received considerable research attention for decades, making it possible to efficiently and intelligently detect crop pests. Nevertheless, the detection of pest objects is still challenging due to the lack of discriminative features and pests' aggregation behavior. Recently, intersection over union (IoU)-based object detection has attracted much attention and become the most widely used metric. However, it is sensitive to small-object localization bias; furthermore, IoU-based loss only works when ground truths and predicted bounding boxes are intersected, and it lacks an awareness of different geometrical structures. Therefore, we propose a simple and effective metric and a loss function based on this new metric, truncated structurally aware distance (TSD). Firstly, the distance between two bounding boxes is defined as the standardized Chebyshev distance. We also propose a new regression loss function, truncated structurally aware distance loss, which consider the different geometrical structure relationships between two bounding boxes and whose truncated function is designed to impose different penalties. To further test the effectiveness of our method, we apply it on the Pest24 small-object pest dataset, and the results show that the mAP is 5.0% higher than other detection methods.
