Quantifying Visual Image Quality: A Bayesian View

Image quality assessment (IQA) models aim to establish a quantitative relationship between visual images and their quality as perceived by human observers. IQA modeling plays a special bridging role between vision science and engineering practice, both as a test-bed for vision theories and computational biovision models and as a powerful tool that could potentially have a profound impact on a broad range of image processing, computer vision, and computer graphics applications for design, optimization, and evaluation purposes. The growth of IQA research has accelerated over the past two decades. In this review, we present an overview of IQA methods from a Bayesian perspective, with the goals of unifying a wide spectrum of IQA approaches under a common framework and providing useful references to fundamental concepts accessible to vision scientists and image processing practitioners. We discuss the implications of the successes and limitations of modern IQA methods for biological vision and the prospect for vision science to inform the design of future artificial vision systems. Unified No-Reference Quality Assessment of Singly and Multiply Distorted Stereoscopic Images

A challenging problem in the no-reference quality assessment of multiply distorted stereoscopic images (MDSIs) is to simulate the monocular and binocular visual properties under a mixed type of distortions. Due to the joint effects of multiple distortions in MDSIs, the underlying monocular and binocular visual mechanisms have different manifestations with those of singly distorted stereoscopic images (SDSIs). This paper presents a unified no-reference quality evaluator for SDSIs and MDSIs by learning monocular and binocular local visual primitives (MB-LVPs). The main idea is to learn MB-LVPs to characterize the local receptive field properties of the visual cortex in response to SDSIs and MDSIs. Furthermore, we also consider that the learning of primitives should be performed in a task-driven manner. For this, two penalty terms including reconstruction error and quality inconsistency are jointly minimized within a supervised dictionary learning framework, generating a set of quality-oriented MB-LVPs for each single and multiple distortion modality. Given an input stereoscopic image, feature encoding is performed using the learned MB-LVPs as codebooks, resulting in the corresponding monocular and binocular responses. Finally, responses across all the modalities are fused with probabilistic weights which are determined by the modality-specific sparse reconstruction errors, yielding the final monocular and binocular features for quality regression. The superiority of our method has been verified on several SDSI and MDSI databases.

Robust Multi-Exposure Image Fusion: A Structural Patch Decomposition Approach

We propose a simple yet effective structural patch decomposition approach for multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) that is robust to ghosting effect. We decompose an image patch into three conceptually independent components: signal strength, signal structure, and mean intensity. Upon fusing these three components separately, we reconstruct a desired patch and place it back into the fused image. This novel patch decomposition approach benefits MEF in many aspects. First, as opposed to most pixel-wise MEF methods, the proposed algorithm does not require post-processing steps to improve visual quality or to reduce spatial artifacts. Second, it handles RGB color channels jointly, and thus produces fused images with more vivid color appearance. Third and most importantly, the direction of the signal structure component in the patch vector space provides ideal information for ghost removal. It allows us to reliably and efficiently reject inconsistent object motions with respect to a chosen reference image without performing computationally expensive motion estimation. We compare the proposed algorithm with 12 MEF methods on 21 static scenes and 12 deghosting schemes on 19 dynamic scenes (with camera and object motion). Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only outperforms previous MEF algorithms on static scenes but also consistently produces high quality fused images with little ghosting artifacts for dynamic scenes. Moreover, it maintains a lower computational cost compared with the state-of-the-art deghosting schemes.
