Pipeline for Automated Processing of Clinical Cone-Beam Computed Tomography for Patient-Specific Temporal Bone Simulation: Validation and Clinical Feasibility

OBJECTIVE

Patient-specific simulation allows the surgeon to plan and rehearse the surgical approach ahead of time. Preoperative clinical imaging for this purpose requires time-consuming manual processing and segmentation of landmarks such as the facial nerve. We aimed to evaluate an automated pipeline with minimal manual interaction for processing clinical cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) temporal bone imaging for patient-specific virtual reality (VR) simulation.

STUDY DESIGN

Prospective image processing of retrospective imaging series.

SETTING

Academic hospital.

METHODS

Eleven CBCTs were selected based on quality and used for validation of the processing pipeline. A larger naturalistic sample of 36 CBCTs were obtained to explore parameters for successful processing and feasibility for patient-specific VR simulation.Visual inspection and quantitative metrics were used to validate the accuracy of automated segmentation compared with manual segmentation. Range of acceptable rotational offsets and translation point selection variability were determined. Finally, feasibility in relation to image acquisition quality, processing time, and suitability for VR simulation was evaluated.

RESULTS

The performance of automated segmentation was acceptable compared with manual segmentation as reflected in the quantitative metrics. Total time for processing for new data sets was on average 8.3 minutes per data set; of this, it was less than 30 seconds for manual steps. Two of the 36 data sets failed because of extreme rotational offset, but overall the registration routine was robust to rotation and manual selection of a translational reference point. Another seven data sets had successful automated segmentation but insufficient suitability for VR simulation.

CONCLUSION

Automated processing of CBCT imaging has potential for preoperative VR simulation but requires further refinement.

3D Indoor Scene Reconstruction and Layout Based on Virtual Reality Technology and Few-Shot Learning

Indoor three-dimensional layout has a strong application background, such as virtual office three-dimensional layout planning, museum three-dimensional layout planning, and cave scene three-dimensional layout planning, which have been widely used in telecommuting, education, tourism, and other industries. In view of this, this paper proposes an indoor landscape reconstruction method based on VR (virtual reality) and draws indoor landscape information and images by using VR technology to generate an indoor landscape reconstruction panorama. A model is established to correct the distance error and reflectivity error of depth image, improve the accuracy of the depth image, and finally improve the accuracy of three-dimensional indoor scene TDR (three-dimensional reconstruction). In the process of optimizing layout, the Monte Carlo sampling method is used based on the Markov chain, and constraints are used as density functions to guide layout sampling and generate a number of reasonable scene layout suggestions in the iterative process of the sampler. Experiments show that this method can provide scientific and reasonable guidance to users' scene layout and help them complete the furniture layout quickly.

Automated coronary artery tree segmentation in coronary CTA using a multiobjective clustering and toroidal model-guided tracking method

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Accurate coronary artery tree segmentation can now be developed to assist radiologists in detecting coronary artery disease. In clinical medicine, the noise, low contrast, and uneven intensity of medical images along with complex shapes and vessel bifurcation structures make coronary artery segmentation challenging. In this work, we propose a multiobjective clustering and toroidal model-guided tracking method that can accurately extract coronary arteries from computed tomography angiography (CTA) imagery.

METHODS

Utilizing integrated noise reduction, candidate region detection, geometric feature extraction, and coronary artery tracking techniques, a new segmentation framework for 3D coronary artery trees is presented. The candidate regions are extracted using a multiobjective clustering method, and the coronary arteries are tracked by a toroidal model-guided tracking method.

RESULTS

The qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented framework, which achieves better performance than the compared segmentation methods in three widely used evaluation indices: the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), Jaccard index and Recall across the CTA data. The proposed method can accurately identify the coronary artery tree with a mean DSC of 84%, a Jaccard index of 74%, and a Recall of 93%.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed segmentation framework effectively segments the coronary tree from the CTA volume, which improves the accuracy of 3D vascular tree segmentation.

Automatic skin lesion area determination of basal cell carcinoma using optical coherence tomography angiography and a skeletonization approach: Preliminary results

Cutaneous blood flow plays a key role in numerous physiological and pathological processes and has significant potential to be used as a biomarker to diagnose skin diseases such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The determination of the lesion area and vascular parameters within it, such as vessel density, is essential for diagnosis, surgical treatment and follow-up procedures. Here, an automatic skin lesion area determination algorithm based on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images is presented for the first time. The blood vessels are segmented within the OCTA images and then skeletonized. Subsequently, the skeleton is searched over the volume and numerous quantitative vascular parameters are calculated. The vascular density is then used to segment the lesion area. The algorithm is tested on both nodular and superficial BCC, and comparing with dermatological and histological results, the proposed method provides an accurate, non-invasive, quantitative and automatic tool for BCC lesion area determination.
